UPDATE: found homes for kittens in garage
UPDATE: Thanks to the kind people I met online and some of my good friends, we managed to find homes for all 5 of the kittens.
If anyone is interested in the mother - a very sweet-natured, young, and affectionate long-haired cat, please let me know. I will take care of getting her spayed. Otherwise, we will try to take her to a no-kill shelter. Thanks again!
Hi all,
Thanks for the advice thus far.
We just discovered 5 kittens (probably about 5 weeks old based on what I've learne on the internet) We unfortunatly cannot keep them, we have parakeets at home, etc.
I have no clue what to do - they are adorable. We don't want to give them to a shelter unless we know it's no-kill - I've heard good things about little Shelter, plan on calling them once they open today.
Any advice, anyone want some kittens?
No clue on how to deal with this!!
Edited to add: the mother is definitely still around, so they are getting care from the mother. I bought some milk replacement and kitten food, if nothing else, the mother also needs food to nurse them.

Re: found kittens in garage
I wish I could convince FH, I want a pet but he doesn't yet.I don't know if Little Shelter is a no kill though, my sister had a dog she put there several years ago and I think that they were talking about putting it down because it was there so long.
What about North Shore Animal League??

Re: found kittens in garage
Call the ASPCA, I'm sure they could recommend no-kill shelters for you.

Re: found kittens in garage
North Shore should take them and they're no kill. Also -- I know Mutts N Butts in Merrick has a kitty rescue (where I got my cat)
Give them a call and see what they say. If they can't take them I'm sure they'll have some great resoursces for you!
HTH!

Re: found kittens in garage
North Shore of Bide-a-Wee are goodas for the kittens itself...since they are so young i would call ASAP so they can start getting food and care. do NOT use bottle feeders---as they might aspirate the liquid into their lungs and die. you need to bring them to a vet or shelter soon so they can eat
also in the meantime--this may sound weird...but tis important--to make sure they go to the bathroom right, take a cotton ball or something simliar that is soft--and wet it with warm water, and then very gently rub/pat their genitals with it so that they will urinate and possibly defecate. when they are that young they do not know how to go on their own. the mother usually licks that area to stimulate their bodily functions, but since the mom isn't around, you have to do this. if not, they can get sick from not going.
like i said, best bet is bring it to a vet's office or shetler as soon as you can!
good luck!!

Last hope will take them and they are no kill. We just sent a 4 week old kitten there ourselves. My brother found it in his girlfriend's backyard tangled in a basketball net.Good Luck!
