the other night we were out w a couple and they were talking about moving to LI because queens is 'changing'
ugh. the whole conversation turned me off. like i understand if people are talking about crime increasing or whatnot...but they are not...they are just talking about new ethnic groups in the neighborhood
like who cares?
do you guys care? how do you deal with ignorant people?
i responded with something short, like 'yeah, imagine how the native americans must've felt'
ughhh
diversity is a good thing, ya know
ok...im getting off my soapbox now.....

It's true, Queens is changing. Sometimes I'm a little resentful of the hipsters coming and raising the rent to the point where I had to move out of Sunnyside but diversity is a good thing.

Re: ignorant people
Nice answer!!!
I have no issues with diversity. I love it actually.
My only issue is when an area is not mixed at all and it's just one giant group of the same people. I feel very alien in those places. For example - Main street, Flushing. I do go there to eat every so often and when I'm in a group, I'm fine, but if I have to go there alone, I feel a little weird.
Is that bad?

Re: ignorant people
Good, let them leave Queens. We don't need their stinkin' attitudes.
One of the things I love about NYC but ESPECIALLY Queens is the diversity. Queens is acclaimed for that.
Your response was great. It was short and still a bit of a zing.
And IMO, as a lifelong resident of Queens - it's gotten better and safer throughout the years. So bring on the multiculti neighborhoods!

I for one could care less about who lives by me with their ethicities! Queens is known for the different cultures and I LOVE it!
Society s*cks though! Depending on who moves into an area, brings the price of houses and property down. Do I agree with it? ABSOLUTELY NOT but some people only see dollar signs instead of people! I'm with Kris, keep them out of Queens and let those that enjoy the differences, embrass it!

I don't care that it's Asian over there, but I do care that it's like 90% Asian. I wish it was more diverse you know?
I don't want to sound terrible and I'm afraid that I might.
I'm totally down to eat there though! Have you ever been to Sago? It's like a trendy noodle place. MmmMm

never been to sago, but there a few places with party rooms that i bookmarked. want to try out one of them?
i hear what you are saying, and i think thats where the language barrier comes in
but i kinda feel the same way where all i see are white people. i know that might sound strange, but i usually do notice if everyone is white. lol. ....the first time i noticed that was a summer in west virginia. holy smokes!! there was a college orientation and 90% were blondes too! i started feeling bad for the brunettes!

Don't look at me. I'm from the midwest.
It's like for every hundred white people there's like 1 of any other group.
.... and 10,000 corn fields.

While I agree diversity is a good thing and I am all for it, I can see the view of your friends. When looking for a neighborhood for my husband and I to live in, we looked at places with little diversity. We want to live in an area with people who are just like us and with little crime rate. My DH and I have both lived in communities that have had an influx of change and it really can cause a dramatic change in a neighborhood. I really don't think that your friends are 'prejudice or racist' but they have strong opinions about the area they live in and everyone is entitled to that.

1. i was not implying that they were racist...i was stating that they were ignorant. i do believe there is a difference
2. i am glad you are very confident that a neighborhood that lacks diversity also lacks crime.

Diversity does not equal crime. In my opinion, that kind of thinking is considered prejudice.
