Major IL vent.

Major IL vent.

I feel somewhat annoyed by last night.

We went to the IL's for dinner and because she wanted me and DH to help plan the 'family cruise'. There's so many factors affecting when to take it.

May seems to the be the only month. I just have one thing; an engagement party on the 7th (for very close friends, not something I really want to miss) and of course Mother's day. My grandmother will have a fit if we're not there when she returns from Florida. Other than that, my schedule is pretty clear.

Well, my BIL is a giant pain. He absolutely must depart from NY so he doesn't use up all his vacation time. . We can go no later than may because SIL will be close to 24 weeks and they don't let you on boats past that (or so MIL says). BIL said begining of April is better. I say NOT because it's the prime of tax season and the first 2 weeks of April are out of the question.

Everyone, including DH, gangs up against me when it comes to my job. I know I'm not an 'accountant' but my presence is still vital. I know my current job would not give me a problem, but they've accomodated for me enough for my back with working part time and making my own hours, that I think taking a 9 day vacaiton right before the end of tax season is going to get me FIRED.

I want to punch someone in the face. It just seems like everyone goes by my Older BIL & SIL because 1.) BIL works a demanding job and 2.) the baby. I'm tired of feeling like I am never heard when it comes to there decisions. I can't just take days off in tax season, especially for that. If it were something like a christening, wedding, shower, or a funeral, that's about it - but 9 days away? Come on. They know I can't do that and then, let's follow into a conversation about me going back to school and being my own boss.

I was also a little upset before dinner. I open the fridge to grab water to drink with dinner. MIL says 'I bought the diet coke for you'. Since when do I drink diet coke? Oh, trying to tell me something? Well, I proceeded to make her feel real bad and tell her my stomach doesn't not react well with the nutrisweet in the soda, that it's a waste buying diet soda for me when I can just drink water or seltzer. Last week, I wasn't allowed ice cream for dessert. She gives me a plate of cantelope. A scoop wasn't going to kill me. I diet by my own terms, thanks.

I have had enough about the weight comments. Ever since my back problems came back, they INSIST that's the problem. Sometimes I wish they would just keep the opinions to themselves. When she found out I switched to part time, she gave DH the hardest time. DH had to lie and say he got a surprise raise. I told DH he shouldn't have to lie. It's really none of her business how him and I manage.

Oh, and this was my favorite; we're watching TV and there's a news report about how facebook shouldn't be for young people. MIL turns to me and says 'yeah jess'.

Hi, I'm 26, an ADULT. I beleive the report was about a different age group, and I was so tempted to tell her that I stumbled upon her facebook page, and she's friends with both my SILs, and has not requested me yet. (I don't want her to, but just saying, don't go telling me facebook is stupid when you're on it too. My father did the same thing and I called him out on it, I will do it to her too).

Lately, DH makes snide comments about my parents. There weird, but they are STILL my parents - and they have gotten a lot better with me since the wedding. And lately, my response has gotten snappy - for everything he says, I say something right back, and I know it's 10x worse. 'Oh you're father is weird offering me a beer at 10 in the morning'. 'Oh yeah? At least he offers you something you may like instead of an effing rice cake because he thinks you need to lose a few pounds'.

And this has been in front of my friends, friends that know my parents and call them by there first names.

I thought of all this on my way to work this morning. I went to bed in silence - not the kind of silence that DH could notice, but played it off that I was tired and just wanted to get to bed early since I had to be up for physical therapy. I have tried, numerous times to talk to him about the way his family makes me feel about things. I am not a child, and they make it seem like I'm going to 'take him down' or something.

Believe me, if I married for money, I don't think a manager a paint store would have been my move. There must obviously be something more......

This sounds like a really, really tough situation. I've found that planning group vacations are so difficult, and I've gotten to a point where I will just say 'Here's the date. If you can go, go. If you can't, you can't.'

It sounds like it is time for you and DH to have a serious talk about the roles that your families will play in your lives.

Exactly, which is why I really wouldn't mind if DH could transfer out of state. We see his parents 3x a week. We see mine maybe once if we're lucky and to be honest I like it that way.

You're not doing anything wrong by not taking days off during tax season. I don't think your job would fire you though - the worst the y would do is deny the time off request. But still, i totally understand not feeling comfortable taking time off at certain times. Your IL's (and especially your DH) should understand that.

Honestly, i'd just tell them i can't make it if they're going in April, but to have fun without you.

As for the diet thing, that's just crap. They have no say in what you eat or how you eat. If my MIL gave me cantaloupe instead of ice cream, i'd prob grab the ice cream myself and eat twice what i normally would just to piss her off.

sorry you're dealing with all this IL crap ....

The thing is, and I know this sounds totally b!tchy of me, I don't want DH to go if I can't go, and I know that will raise eyebrows with everyone.

I feel reasons are 'Sorry, but you promised to be more vocal and stand up for me, but I don't think it's fair everyone else gets to have fun while I stay home and take care of all your pets'.

I want to say it, but I know this will cause a HUGE fight.

Re: Major IL vent.

you should tell your DH that you can't go in the beginning of April and that he needs to get his family to work around your schedule as well as BIL & SIL's. It's not fair that you need to bend over backwards for them while they don't do anything for you.

maybe you guys should try to find a shorter cruise so it's easier to schedule?

I told them that - and I also told them that perhaps this should have been booked sooner, because the problem is they want to book 4 cabins near each other. Personally, I don't want them near each other.

What if we're DTD? Yeah, don't need my ILs hearing that.

This 'trip' apparently has been trying to get under way for quite sometime, but someone is always throwing a wrench, either it's 'tax season' or someone's sick or pregnant.

Perhaps a cruise is a bit much - I know it's fun because you can visit different islands, but for 8 people and an infant, I would think an island that has a lot to do and staying in one hotel seems better to manage.

This word for word- right down to the eating ice cream until I'm sick to my stomach out of spite.

As for the cruise- your DH would WANT to go without you? Mine wouldn't even think twice- he'd tell them 'sorry, we can't go, we're gonna do the one in May if anyone is interested.'

ETA: As for the rooms being together- fluck it, be louder than usual. We've had rooms booked next to ILs on cruises and it never inhibited us in the least- we're all adults, we're married for eff's sake.

ETAA: Wow you can't even say f*c*u*k now!

If they insist on going when you cant go- I say the hell with them, let them go when they want. Go away with DH- just the 2 of you.

I am sorry and I hope i am not overstepping but it sounds like people I wouldnt want to go on vacation with anyway. Can you see going to the buffet and them telling you dont eat this or that?

Very good point Celia. I can see that as well. Hopefully I'd have a baby belly by then so I'd have an excuse.

I'd have to sneak to the buffet.

I was already talking to to DH a while ago about booking another cruise soon because I had so much fun on the one we were on. The MIL calls last week and tells us about the 'family cruise' which I thought 'alright, it's paid for!'

I don't know at this point if that seems worth it to me.

I can see DH going without me, because it's paid for, so why not? I would be very happy though if he said 'no' without me having to even mention how it would hurt me if I was alone for that long.

If I don't feel up for going out somewhere (mainly because sometimes I just feel like not seeing anyone), DH will go out and not even ask if I am alright to be alone, if I'd like him to stay, etc. I think he's done it once, but it still annoys me when he says 'hey free meal at my parents house'.

Um, I'm your wife a hole, I can cook or 99% of the time there's leftovers for you to heat up.

The emblical cord was dettached 30 years ago.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Family vacations with IL's are difficult because you only have so much say on your own, especially if the IL's are paying. I don't really have much advice, just wanted to give you hugs

And I'm sorry to do this, but this reminds me of a funny story with my SIL. We're taking a family vacation with DH's family in July and SIL suggested DH and I share a room with her and BIL (her brother, not her husband), to save money.............DH, BIL, MIL, FIL, and I were all just like 'ummmmmmmmmmm NOOOOO'

Yeah....I mean if I HAD to share a room, my one SIL and my BIL aren't a problem because I have shared a room with them and it's not awkward.

I'd rather have my own room though. I talk in my sleep. LOL.

Re: Major IL vent.

I'm SO sorry you're going through this. I think your DH and you need to sit down and have a serious talk. Now yelling and no screaming, just talk. DH JUST started stepping back from his parents and it's a HUGE relief and we have so many fewer fights because of it.

You need to just simply sit him down and tell him 'I think we need to talk about our families, what upsets you and what upsets me'. DH and I had to agree to not make comments about each others parents anymore because it would just get worse and worse and then friends started seeing it (especially hard when we would hang out with his sister and BIL and I couldn't say anything).

The important thing is to TALK and LISTEN to what the other person says. For example, my DH would tell me 'your mom has a tendency to yell at me', she wasn't yelling, she was just VERY blunt with what she had to say. While I know what she's doing and don't agree with what he was saying I knew it upset him so when she did it again I told her to cut it out. She's gotten a lot better. With my MIL she's just TOO attached and I told DH something like 'your mother called me 3 times today'. So he turned around and told his mom to stop calling me so much.

It's you guys against the world and you have to be on the same team. If you end up fighting each other and the families are the mean 'problem' then it's going to never end.

Just stop spending time over there. Don't give them the opportunity to make you feel bad. They are DH's family and he has to deal with them, not you. (especially if they make you feel bad.)

yeahh..u see them 3x a week?!?! I see mine once every week, and feel like thats even too much, i always come home in a bad mood.
I know your trying to avoid a fight, but ive been in situations like this, if your silent now and dont express yourself everybody will get used to u just being quiet and agreeing....9 days is way too much time to take off during prime tax season, if you cant do it - DONT...
you shouldnt be getting fired because of INLAWS little vacation planning that doesnt take your job in to account....
I'm surprised DH would want to stay away form u for 9 days and go on a cruise with them.... you should subtly tell him youd miss him, or plan something else!

Someone upstairs must of have heard me, the cruise suggested I had was the one that got booked.

MIL just seems like the type that would think I'm an 'over analyzer' and 'paranoid'. I've already tried to voice my opinion once, DH ruined that by calling her and telling 'I don't like to be 'yelled at' on my voicemail about why I have to get my stitches on on christmas eve'. (that's a whole other story).

And yeah, I am kinda tired of going over there all the time. Lately I have been purposely planning dinners with my friends just to say we have plans, if I say we're home she'll guilt him into why we can't make a 10 minute trip.
