WWYD - stray animals

WWYD - stray animals

so on saturday as i was pulling into my parents driveway i saw a tuxedo cat across the street (a very busy street) hunched under a tree kinda just hanging out by the road.

i was SO torn on what to do. capture him and bring him to a shelter? just turn my head?

i ran into pee bc i was about to burst in the driveway as i contemplated and he was gone by the time i went back outside.

i adopted my first cat, tiger (a girl but i tought she was a boy) after she wandered into our backyard. i put signs everywhere and my grandma (i was like 7 at the time) made me knock on all of the neighborhood doors to see if she belonged to anyone before i could keep her.

what do you guys do when you see a stray? specifically, when u see one in a dangerous spot.

There's a stray by my house. I feed her a lot and now that she knows me, I can pet her, too, but she won't let me pick her up. I was going to try to catch her, bring her to get fixed, and then release her, but I think she may already be fixed. I think she used to belong to someone on the block who moved away and abandoned her there and she's just never left. But she's not in much danger by my house- it's a quiet one way street with a dead end. I'd start off by leaving food out. Maybe see which way the cat comes from and make sure the food is on their side of the street. After gaining some trust, you might be able to catch it and bring it to a shelter.

I've seen a few dogs on busy streets/in busy areas out on LI. My baby is a rescue so I have a soft spot for them. I think 3 times now I've caught up to the dog and called it into a shelter or police station and then waited until someone came to get the dog. DH has also taken a dog to a vet once and the vet took it from there.

I actually haven't seen cats and I think it would be a bit different just because some cats are outdoor cats and they wander and then go home. If it was a dangerous spot though I'd probably report it to the nearest shelter - cats are elusive so I probably wouldn't try to catch it unless it was in IMMEDIATE danger.

We had a stray by our apt about a year ago ... we bought cat food and would feed him every day ... we even named him Stinky (we didn't want to get attached ... but we def were lol). I applied for something (i forget the name) to get him neutered for free and we were going to take him ... but then his health started dwindeling and he was limping around ... DH and I caught him (he was NOT happy) and took him to a shelter .... i called every day to make sure he wasn't going to get euthanized (if he was, we were going to take him home and keep him) ... someone adopted him within a month though

My neighborhood is feral cat central... I can't even count who's many there are around here
There's really nothing that can be done. You can't feed them because there are so many and you don't want to touch them because they are all maingy.
One neighbor used to bring them into her house, she had over forty coming and going, her house and yard smelled so bad.
It breaks my heart, but I can't take them all in, and the vet charges you if you take them there... The only thing I could do is call a no kill shelter, but they'd never catch them all.

If I see a stray dog, I always go after it. I've caught a few and returned them to their owners.

As for stray cats...it's hard because you don't really know if it's a stray or if it is just someone's cat.

I always try to catch them, see if they have tags or get them to a safe place. It doesn't always work out, but I do try.

Christmas Day when we took our dogs to Tanner Park for a quick run - we saw two little dogs just out and about - they were obviously 'together' as one wouldn't go anywhere with out the other. One was limping pretty bad & it was freezing out. We were able to get them into the dog run where we could check for tags. They had tags, but they were all rusted and chewed. I began to call everywhere...the police, the SPCA, the animal shelters, animal control... no one would/could help...
DH knew I wouldn't leave them... and I knew I couldn't take them home (with 2 dogs, 2 cats and 800 sq feet..we dont have room).
The park patrol (a young Kid) called everywhere he knew to try and get help, and finally he put the dogs in his car to get warm while I drove my dogs home...
He was able to get a number for an emergency vet in West islip...we called them and they said that they would take in the dogs and hold them until the shelter opened on Monday. I was so thankful those babies had a place to go (especially with the 2 feet of snow we got that night!) and hopefully found a home.

Re: WWYD - stray animals

Last summer I caught 2 stray dogs. Bad I know lol. Both were in my neighborhood and had colars on so I figured they were semi tame. I pulled over and picked the dog up and knocked on about 15 houses in the area until I decided to bring him home. I did give 1 neighbor my address b/c he thought it was his neighbors but wasn't 100% (they weren't home). He was so nice but long story short I brought him to the police station and they said they would give someone 48 hours to come get him before they brought him to a shelter. Luckily the neighbor I gave my info too stopped by my house to say that it was infact his neighbors dog and they were looking for him. They eventually went to the precient and god their dog.

The 2nd dog was my neighbor's down the block. They are stupid and I hate them b/c this dog got loose 5x's last year and each time I picked him up and brought him back to their house. 1 day they weren't home and I had to leave so I again brought the dog to the station but gave them their address. I also left a note on my neighbors door to let them know the dog was at the station.

Last summer there was a little white poodle puppy on the side of the road on the SS. I was with my mom and pulled over to try and catch it but it kept running from me. At least I somewhat chassed it further away from the actual road.

I know it's really bad and not safe but I can't help it.

Re: WWYD - stray animals

If they cat is just an abandoned stray and not purely feral I will try to catch him or her. I've done this several times in the past and found homes for the cats. Also, two of the cats I grew up with were caught this way.
