Okay, I am debating if I should register for china or not. At first I was totally for it but the more I think about it, the more I think it's kind of a waste for us. First of all we don't have the storage space and second, I can never see us having a dinner that is that formal. I would almost rather register for a second set of everyday dishes. My FH is a student and it will be a couple of more years until we are settled into our new home.
Did anyone out there not register for china? Will I regret this decision later on?
Thanks for your input!

I registered for china and then took it off for the same reasons. It would of just been a total waste to receive it as a gift right now.

I registered for it, but got advice from quite a few people that it may have been more worth it to register for one really good set of everyday dishes.
I still registered for it because I like it...and like the idea of possibly having something I can pass to my daughter!

My FH and I had the same discussion. He did not want to register for china. He is going to be in Grad school come Sept and we will have the same space limitations. I wanted it b/c I know people like to give long lasting memorable gifts. And, if you don't get it at your wedding - will you ever actually buy it yourselves? As an engagement gift, my FMIL gave us her grandmother's china and they will store it until we have room. So, that solved our problem. Had she not, I probably would have registered for it and asked her to store it for us. I grew up having 'fancy' holidays where we used china and I want to do the same for my family someday. If you don't think you'll ever use it, then just increase your # of everyday place settings to 16.

My friend just got everyday dishes and doesn't tret it. I know we are not going to use it for a while but I know one day I am going to want it and I am not going to be able to justify spending 1000's on it.

Re: china- do we really need it?
FI and I have this debate all the time. He thinks its really silly to have china and i want it. we're going to have a house built and i want a china cabinet and china to fill it. he says we dont need china, its a waste. we'll use it what maybe once or twice a year. its not worth it.
so i am not sure if i am going to have it on my registry or not.

Re: china- do we really need it?
My mom got her china like 5 years ago, she never registered and now she has a set that she really loves. We use the china about 6-8 times a year, so that is why I registerd for it. But I was lucky the Mikasa dishes I wanted were only $29.99 a 5 piece setting.

My friend did not register for it. She just registered for really nice everyday dishes and about a month before her shower..she regretted it and added china.

I'm in the same position and I didn't register for it. My FI is starting Law school in Sept. so we will probably be living in a small apt. We won't have the space to store it and won't have any use for it in the near future. If we want it some time down the road, we'll buy it for ourselves.

I did not register for China, wasn't even an issue for me whether to or not. I break stuff all the time, don't really entertain, and if I did, it would be casual and not fancy. Too much $$$$ for something I wouldn't use or have interest in using.

Re: china- do we really need it?
Ok, I registered for it, but I dont have a need for it now. I only got like 5 settings from my shower and none of the things that go with it. But i will never buy it for myself down the road without this head start. I chose a cheaper Mikasa brand. I know I will want it later, and I love the idea of my children inheriting it. My mom never had good china or good anything. So it meant a lot to me to start collecting it now.

Re: china- do we really need it?
In hindsight, I'm glad we did, because I know I'll use it once we're in the house. I intend on using it as much as possible, even if we just have friends over for dinner. I figured that if I didn't register for it, I'd never get any because a full set of china is not something I would ever spend money on, as opposed to everyday dishes, which I'll probably just go out and buy without ever feeling the need to justify the purchase. It's nice to have. I don't think anyone really 'needs' it, and if you don't have the space, it'll just be clutter...

I registered for it and got some and bought some more. I had thanksgiving at my home and my table looked so beautiful with it. It is nice to have for holidays and special occasions. I just got 8 and that is about all I really need.

I don't think you need it. We weren't going to register for it but we found a reasonable set. They were having a sale over Christmas for just under $300 you got 8 place settings and lots of other accessories (milk and sugar, christmas accent plates, medium oval platter, med. round veggis bowl plus a few others I think). Normally they are around $42 per setting. If we didn't find this deal we wouldn't have gotten china. Watch for things like these

Re: china- do we really need it?
Great question! We are having this debate as well. The more I think about it, the more I don't really want it. I have one set of china from my grandmother that is sitting in a box and I believe there is another set coming from the same grandmother, if we can find it. So I have at least one set, I don't think I need another set.

Re: china- do we really need it?
I didn't register for China. FH and I have never lived together so there are so many other things we are going to need to start off. I'd rather get things that we really NEED at my shower. Don't get me wrong- I love china and appreciate its value, but its just not something we need right now. FH and I will probably buy it for ourselves when we get a house in a year or two.

We did not register for China we registered only for casual dining goodies. I do not see where in the near future we would ever be using it.

Re: china- do we really need it?
Of course you no one needs china
It was one of those things that we thought we might really enjoy having eventually and figured we probably wouldn't get it later on.

I agree that you don't need it. But your lifestyle might change later on and you might enjoy having more formal holiday dinners or get togethers a few times a year. There is no substitute for a table set with fina china - it's beautiful and elegant! Also, having many people pitch in to buy it for your shower is better than having to spend all the money on your own later on. If you can fit it into your registry without having to sacrifice more important things, then go for it!
