Hawaii Honeymoon Review - very thorough!!

Got back from our amazing hawaii honeymoon a few weeks ago and finally got a minute to sit down and write a review...it's very detailed because one of my BMs is going there next year and wanted to know everything so i just attached all i told her....hope this helps! First section is general info and then i broke it down by islands we went to....

General Info:
Booking activities – Don’t be worried about booking activities early in the morning. You’ll be on a different time schedule so there will be no problem waking up early. We had to wake up at 5am (to be there on time) for the shark tour and we were wide awake! It felt like 11am to us(6 hour time difference). We also were in bed every night really early! The first night we went to bed at 7:45pm!!! And the latest we ever stayed up was at the end of our two weeks we went to bed at 10pm.

Also about booking activities – call your hotel and ask to speak to the concierge/activity desk and ask for suggestions. The Grand Hyatt was amazing with this. I called them in early July and they emailed me companies they recommended as well as a restaurant list. The Maui hotel also helped make reservations for activities as well. Ask about the 2 for 1 coupon. There are certain activities you really need to book ahead of time and others you can wait. (I’ll put a * after the activity if I suggest booking ahead of time, which we did)

Also there are safes in each hotel room so you can keep your valuables in there each day, which is really nice.

Car Rentals – before you go to Hawaii call up your car insurance companies and see if what you pay covers any car rental cause that would save you a lot of money. Every car rental company tries to convince you that you’ll lose your key and all this other stuff but if your car insurance at home covers you that means you save a bunch of money which we did.

Note about your flight back to NY – there are very few of these at each airport so make sure to definitely get there 2 hours before because you will most likely stand on a really long line to check-in(boo).

Definitely bring a lot of suntan lotion! You will go through so much, even my husband who refuses to wear it usually wore it all the time. It’s cheaper to buy it here than over there. Also bring bug spray! On hikes you will definitely need it and a lot of activities as well. It’s easy to keep that and suntan lotion in your rental car at all times in case.

Water shoes – this is a must. We bought these new water sneakers from Bass outlets up in Waterloo and it was our best investment of our entire trip! The sneakers would dry really quickly and it was perfect for hikes! They would get super muddy but help you with the hiking section and then you could wear them in the ocean for snorkeling or swimming and clean them right off. So many places we went in the water you needed water shoes so it was nice to have these. They also look nicer than those dorky water shoes I think. Lots of people went up to us and asked us about them, since they look like regular sneakers.

Packing – seriously, I WAY over packed! I used about ¼ of what I brought. You basically need bathing suits, which you’ll wear almost everyday, and cover-ups for them. Bring clothes you can dirty for hiking and activities. At night I would dress up just to make it feel special as most ladies did. Bring a long sleeve shirt (helicopter ride and sunrise tour) and a sweatshirt(sunrise tour). The important thing to remember is the less you bring, the more room you have to shop and bring stuff home! Bring in your carry-on bag a bathing suit, cover-up, an extra pair of dry clothes (in case your luggage is lost). If one of your suitcases is over weight, just move things to the other luggage or your carry on. Bring headphones definitely for the flight because you’ll get to listen to whatever movie they play(even if it ***** you still might want them).

US Airways:
Mixed feelings with them. The good thing was we weren’t delayed at all (for all four flights which is shocking). One of my BMs used a different airline and they got a bottle of champagne when the flight attendants found out it was their honeymoon. We let everyone know and we got nothing (although we went when it was mainly all honeymoon couples and they went when it was mainly families on vacation). No food on the meals but I think that might be a domestic flight thing.

Note about InterIsland flights – we used Aloha Airlines but either way it’s open seating. That means there are no assigned seats, it’s first come first seat. Everyone lines up really early so they can get seats together and get a good view when they land. Very quick flights. Also don’t go swimming earlier that day, because then your hair will be all wet and you’ll have to sit in wet clothes on the flight(if you cant change and dry off because you had to check-out).

Overall, we had an amazing 2 weeks. We didn’t feel like it was too long, we didn’t want it to end. Especially when you have to travel so far it’s nice to relax for so long. If we did it over again though we would’ve spent probably a straight week in Kauai and instead of Maui, we would’ve gone to the Big Island of Hawaii. The reason for this is the activities we were interested in doing were more at that island versus Maui. Oahu is mixed. Brian still would’ve done it because of Pearl Harbor where I could’ve skipped that, though I loved the shark swim. Our suggestion is to read the “Hawaii Revealed” books activity sections and see what activities interest you(go to Barnes and Noble to see the other two island books we didn’t get). On the Big Island you can go to the Volcano Park and hike around which we thought sounded awesome. Also there are tons of black sand beaches there as well. We watched a lot of travel channel shows and the things we liked just happened to be on the Big Island. There is a really cool kayak river tour there as well which we would’ve done. Also there is a night swim with mona rays, swimming with dolphins, and some other fun activities.

Oahu

Hotel: Outrigger Waikiki On the Beach
We really liked it! It’s supposed to only be the equivalent of a Holiday Inn over here but we thought it was even better than that. We were upgraded to a partial ocean view room and it was really nice. The free bottle of champagne they gave us was awful (but that’s how it was at each of the hotels, you are forewarned). The pool was nothing special but the hotel was right on Waikiki beach which was great and it was a perfect part of the beach as well. The location was perfect and the restaurants all looked good. You can see Diamond Head and it’s a beautiful view all around. We had a small balcony which was also really nice to sit out on at night(I fell asleep out there one night)

Car Rental: Enterprise
Highly recommend it! We ended up needing a car to do the shark swim so we called them (instead of going through Sue) to see what the price was. We had a coupon for 20% off daily price of a one day rental and they were great cause we didn’t have to guarantee that we were going to rent the car til that day (which was great cause the shark swim could only happen if the weather was good so we could check the weather report first). We told them it was our honeymoon and they upgraded us as well to a Sebring convertible which was pretty cool? Also they have two locations – one within walking distance from our hotel and one at the airport. We picked it up near our hotel and didn’t know where we were going to drop it off (cause we were cutting it close with getting back from the shark swim and getting our ride to the airport that we had scheduled through Sue), and they were really nice and said we could decide on our drive back. (if you do this make sure on the phone when you make your reservation to ask how much it would be to drop it off at a different location and tell the branch when you get there, otherwise they’ll charge you more) We ended up being able to drop it off back there and walked back to our hotel just in time to get picked up for the airport.

Restaurant:
Duke’s Canoe Club (Bar and Restaurant)
Located on the bottom floor of the hotel, which opened right onto the pool deck. It was my favorite restaurant of the entire trip! We first had drinks there and sat in the bar section, they had live Hawaiian music which was really nice for Happy Hour. Then we had dinner there (in the restaurant section). They had a huge salad bar which was really nice and came with all the meals. I highly recommend the Teriyaki steak, this was by far the best steak all over Hawaii. They have a Duke’s in Kauai as well, I wish we had gone there but we didn’t (we wanted to try new places). Brian had fish which he thought was good but he tried my steak and wished he had ordered that cause it was so good. The nice thing is you can charge the food to your room (though that’s not such a great thing as we later found out cause we just kept adding and adding it up at a later hotel).

Matteo’s (Italian)
We went here because we had a coupon from the Entertainment Book for buy one entrée get one free. It was good, nothing special. If you go though I recommend making a reservation. We went without and though they were able to take us right away we didn’t get these really romantic booths. We had seen they had set up all this nice stuff at the booths for couples who had made reservations. You don’t feel like you’re in Hawaii though.

Things to Do:
Enoa Tours – Pearl Harbor/Circle Island Tour*
We’d say it was not worth it. If we did it over, we would take the money we spent on the tour and just rent a car for the entire time we were on Oahu. If you do take it though sit on the left side of the shuttle (the side behind the driver, they had the better views).
North Shore Shark Adventures* – www.sharktourshawaii.com & www.hawaiisharkadventures.com 808-228-5900
Awesome!!! Tours start as early as 7am and got til about 3pm. Only you and your husband(!) will be in the shark cage, and then if anyone else is on the boat with you they’ll go separate. Bring an underwater camera with you. It’s two hours total. They provide you with snorkel gear. Directions on website are wrong though, we had to ask some people and found it, so just leave extra travel time. *in the Oahu Maps magazine you can pick up at car rentals there was a coupon for it but we didn’t see it til we left Oahu, whoops

Pearl Harbor – USSArizona Memorial
Brian liked it, I found it just okay. If you like history and Pearl Harbor is important to you then just go on your own, not through a tour. Get there early so you can get it done quickly, our tour got us there around 7:15 and we were in the third group.

Though we didn’t do it, we’d suggest going to the Battleship Missouri and Bowfin. They cost some money but there are coupons around, when you check into your hotel see if they have discount books in the lobby(the Outrigger does) or the Entertainment book has coupons for it as well.

Diamond Head – heard that it’s better to do early in the morning since it gets hot and it’s harder to hike. Brian was disappointed we didn’t have time to do it but we both we had done.

Dole Plantation – on our tour we stopped here. If you want some pineapple ice cream then stop there. We took some funny pictures there though.

North Shore – it was fun to watch the surfers. If you watch LOST, between Hale’iwa and Waimea Bay is the beach they film the beach scenes on. Sharks cove is good for snorkeling, we got out and stopped and watched and it looked like fun(no worries, no sharks there). Sunset beach was pretty, but nothing special.

East Coast – in Waikane we stopped for lunch at a little tiny place called “Orchards of Waiahole”. The burgers were good and shrimp was good as well(Brian thought so). Pali Lookout was a beautiful view. We wished we could’ve taken one of the roads they built through the mountains, supposedly driving up it gives an amazing view as well. Wished we had time to stop at the Kaneohe Sand Bar on the east coast, heard it is supposed to be beautiful!

SouthEast Coast – Hanauma Bay has the best snorkeling on Oahu. We got out there to look around on our tour and it looked awesome and our tourguide suggested it to everyone who had time.

Other activities we looked into:
Bottom Fishing Tours – Midnight Shark Fishing
808-955-3474/808-955-FISH
10pm-1am; pick up and drop off at hotel
$125/pp (Entertainment book had coupon for 30% off)

Re: Hawaii Honeymoon Review - very thorough!!

Kauai
Our FAVORITE island – it is so beautiful, lush, and very relaxing! We spent 4 full days there and a half day (the other half day only included time for breakfast and the airport). We EASILY could’ve spent at least 2 more full days here, we didn’t have time to do everything and we just loved it so much.

Hotel: Grand Hyatt
The MOST AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL, GORGEOUS hotel EVER!!! HIGHLY recommend it! Though it is very expensive, it was definitely worth it! Try to get the deal that gives you a free buffet breakfast. It is worth it and it’s also amazing! It will fill you up til dinner time. There are two places to get your complimentary breakfast. The buffet is at the Ilima Terrace Restaurant and it is so good you’ll never want to check out the other place. The view is so beautiful in the morning and very relaxing. Every morning they had different food, we never even went to the other restaurant cause that was just a meal, we wanted a buffet.
As for the hotel, it is gorgeous. The workers are so nice as well too. We weren’t upgraded by the hotel, even though they knew it was our honeymoon, but they asked if we wanted to upgrade to a partial ocean view room. My new husband was so sweet and upgraded us. This was great because it gave us a room overlooking the pools. Besides the view being worth it, the location of the room was ideal. The hotel is HUGE, rooms can be more than a mile away from the pools. We were warned about this ahead of time from people who had gone, and said to do whatever it takes to get a room close to the pools otherwise it is such a schlep to go anywhere in the hotel (they even suggested saying you have problems with your legs and can’t walk too far just to get a room close by).
The Pools were omg, great!!! There were over 7 pools, each one had something different. They also had pool side dining, waitresses would come over to the lounge chairs and take drink and food orders. You can sit in the pool with your drinks as well, which we did. There’s a water slide and a pool that’s a salt water lagoon. The pools never close, they are open 24 hours. My favorite part of the pools was this lazy river they had, they had waterfalls with little caves behind them. They were fun. I never wanted to leave the hotel, it was just so beautiful.
The free bottle of champagne though was not good again, just be warned! It was nice though cause we sat out on the terrace to our bedroom and well…tried to drink it.
We also go to see their luau – from afar. If you sat on one of the balconies in the lobby you could watch it and hear it which was nice too. They had a few different bars with different atmospheres as well, we wished we had more time and energy at night to enjoy them.

Car Rental: Alamo
The car rental company was AWFUL. I told Sue about them and told her not to use them, at least on Kauai. We got our car we wanted in the end but the service there was just so bad. It took forever and it seemed like the workers didn’t know what they were doing. We rented a Jeep Wrangler which was fun though. The only problem with it is that it doesn’t have a trunk so everything you have in your car people can see. This got us worried when we went places, tourist areas, cause we were scared that someone might break in. We were told though that Kauai really doesn’t have a high level of theft which is great. We just made sure to bring only what we needed for each day.

Restaurants:
Tide Pools (at the Grand Hyatt)
This was expensive! Since we got to Kauai late in the afternoon and they had suggested making reservations for dinner we picked one of the restaurants in the hotel to eat at who could squeeze us in. The setting is beautiful and you can make a reservation to have one of the tables that are separated from everyone else (I heard you might have to pay an extra fee). The food was okay, but for the amount of money you pay they should give bigger portions (that’s how fancy restaurants are though).

Wranglers Steak
You don’t need to make reservations here. Small place in the town where we did the rafting so that was nice to eat away from the tourist area. Their small salad bar which also had soup was included which was nice and the portions were big but nothing special.

Keioki’s
Our friends had suggested eating here. We went without a reservation and there was a wait but there was a shorter wait in the bar section (to sit there). We decided to do that although they had a more limited menu. The menu though was good enough and we enjoyed it. If you go definitely get the Hula Pie, delicious!

Captain’s Bar/Dock Restaurant (Pool side service at the Hyatt)
It was nice to finally have bar greasey food! Yum! We just relaxed by the pool at night and ordered food and drinks to our lounge chairs. The food service there ends though around 5:30 so make sure you get your order in before.

Roy’s
We had heard if you made a reservation and told them it was your honeymoon they decorated your table all special and gave a complimentary dessert. This was not true! We were disappointed cause we told them and made a reservation early just to make sure. The food wasn’t really that good but the dessert – the chocolate lava cake – was fabulous!

Things to Do:
NaPali Explorer* – Zodiac 26” Explorer I
808-338-9999; 5 hour tour (6:30am arrive, tour til 12:30pm); napaliexplorer.com
AAA discount(!!!): $106.25/pp (15% off of $125 originally)
Breakfast(little danishes), deli lunch(sandwiches, chips, fruit, and drinks), snorkel, swim, sea cave, tour of NaPali coast
This was a fabulous activity! Well worth the money! We saw TONS of dolphins that came right up to the raft, sea turtles, a seal as well! We got to go swimming right off the raft right near the dolphins. We went in tons of sea caves(the only thing about this is that we lucked out and the water was calm that day which allowed for this). The views are beautiful and then we went onto a beach where we ate and then got to go snorkeling which was a lot of fun. Unfortunately we couldn’t remember the captain’s name but his partner was called Junior. Our captain was awesome and a lot of fun. The ride was really adventurous – thought I was going to fall off a number of times! I’d suggest wearing water shoes on the raft only cause you have to keep your feet below a rope to help keep you from falling out and the rope rubs your feet and my foot was really red by the end of the trip. Also be prepared to be extremely achy the next day, we both were from holding on. We were laughing so much though and had lots of fun! Overall, great excursion.
*Bring an underwater camera definitely. Actually if you can, get a cover for your digital camera that way you can get some great shots. We brought our digital camera and underwater one. We had to keep putting the digital one in the wet bag(at the check-in they ask if you want one and do it, they just hold on to your credit card, there is no charge though) but it was annoying cause you didn’t want it to get wet but then it was hard to grab when you wanted a nice picture. The captain will tell you when to definitely put away anything you don’t want to get wet (at that time you’ll definitely get wet).

InterIsland Helicopters* -
800-656-5009/808-335-5009; interislandhelicopters.com
$220/pp for the 55-minute tour; camera must have strap, dress warm
We did a 55-minute tour; all helicopters have no doors which was an extra fun bonus. It was great cause we got the two front seats which I think were the best to have. We had heard that helicopter tours play music on your headphones but on our tour our guide just spoke and told us a lot of information and we actually really enjoyed listening to it. We learned a lot and the view was priceless! Originally Brian hadn’t wanted to do a helicopter tour because it was expensive and it ended up being his favorite excursion of our entire honeymoon! He thought it was well worth the money as well. They have a longer tour that stops at a waterfall and originally we really wanted to do it but it was so expensive. In the end we were happy we didn’t do that tour anyway. The 55-minute was great and more than enough.

*note – We did the NaPali Explorer in the morning and the InterIsland Helicopter tour in the afternoon. It was nice cause they were close by so we didn’t have to drive out of our way. Also it was fun cause we got to see the NaPali coast in the morning from the ocean and then when we flew over it in the afternoon by helicopter we got to see where we had been and it was just amazing to see it from both views in one day.

Kimo’s – Snorkel rentals
We rented our snorkel gear from them for $10 for 3 full days. The lady was super nice there and it was literally down the block from our hotel (and all the hotels in the Poipu area).

(The next five places we did all in one day – Wailua Falls was on the way to the North Shore and the rest were on the North Shore)

Wailua Falls –
Pretty, easy drive to as well. We stopped here on the way to the North Shore.

Queens Bath -
We did a hike to here (it’s in the Kauai Revealed book, that’s the only place you’ll hear about it). We really enjoyed this, it was beautiful. It’s a lava pool right off the ocean. We hiked to it and then snorkeled in it which was a lot of fun. Unfortunately the ocean was a little rough so it kept pouring over a little too much into the lava pool which made it difficult to snorkel in, but hopefully if you go(which we both suggest) the water won’t be as rough. If it hadn’t we would’ve probably stayed here for hours.

Hideaways Beach -
The hike was steep and I didn’t think it was worth it. The water was rough as I said earlier so we couldn’t snorkel here either and the water was too murky so we felt it was dangerous. It was nice cause it was a pretty private beach but if we did it over again I don’t think we would’ve gone.

Princeville Hotel -
We stopped here because we needed the bathroom after Hideaways Beach. This is supposed to be the nicest hotel on Kauai so we also wanted to check it out. The view is beautiful of the bay but I think that the Hyatt is even better.

Ke’e Beach -
You have to drive all the way to the end of the north shore road to get here and you get to drive over a lot of one lane bridges. It was a pretty road. We didn’t do the hike right near the beach, we just went to the beach which was nice. Of course there were chickens there(as you’ll find out they are all over Kauai). We snorkeled and the fish came right up to us, I guess people feed them often. We laid out and relaxed. It was a pretty beach, though I think that the beaches on Maui and Waikiki beaches are better(the sand is nicer there than Kauai). There was a sea cave we passed on the road to Ke’e Beach so we stopped and went in there as well, just to break up the drive.

Kipu ATV Tours* –
808-246-9288; www.kiputours.com
3-hour tour and 4-hour waterfall tour; $140 (driver); $125 (passenger)
We did the 4-hour waterfall tour and if we did it over again we would suggest the 3-hour. The private waterfall wasn’t that great but the tour itself was so much fun! We did the Bomber, so I got to ride with my husband, holding on to him. That was nice cause that way we could talk while we were riding around, otherwise we would only be able to talk when they stopped to talk about the things we were seeing. Also because we rode one ATV it cut the cost down. The tour was great and our tour guide was also. We lucked out and had only a family of 4 with us and that was all. It made it really nice to have a small tour. Definitely wear clothes you can get dirty and wear bug spray. We suggest the morning tour(the earliest one) because it seems that they have smaller groups go in the morning(which makes it worth it) and it’s not as hot either. Lots of fun, definitely worth it!

Kipu Falls –
This is on the way back from the ATV tour, ask them how to get there. It was a fabulous private waterfall area, though there were a lot of people our age there. There’s a cliff that you can jump off of or a huge rope swing if you feel adventurous. This was my husband’s favorite spot in Kauai and I thought it was a lot of fun. You can spend a lot of time here and swim, get the dirt off of you from the ATV. This waterfall was better than the private one on the atv tour, which is why we suggest the 3 hour tour instead of the 4 hour one. Spend the time here instead, much better! But definitely check Kipu Falls out when you’re in Kauai!

Waimea Canyon –
We drove up here and stopped at a lot of the lookouts. Unfortunately when we got to the very top it fogged up and we couldn’t see anything but we got to see beautiful views on the way up.

Spouting Horn –
It’s right near the hotel. It is another blow hole but it makes noise when it blows and it was fun to see. Worth checking out.

Sunset at the Beach House –
The Beach House Restaurant is supposedly super expensive and the food *****! You pay to see the view of the sunsetting….BUT you don’t have to eat here to see the sunset with the view. There’s a lawn in front of it where lots of people go and sit and watch the sunset. It was really pretty and that’s what we did. Ask at the concierge desk what time the sun is setting that day and then make a dinner reservation for after it so you can watch and then go eat. Everyone we spoke to and all the critic books said the food ****** at the restaurant so don’t eat there.

Other Activities: (we didn’t have time for)
River Kayak Renting
$20-45/day 1 person; $35-65/day 2 person

Lihue – Kalapaki Beach – supposedly has sailboat rentals

North Shore – Kilauea Lighthouse, Lava Pools(hike), Pools of Mokolea(hike), Sea Lodge Beach, Secret Beach, Larsens Beach, Moloa’a Beach

East Shore – Opaeka’s Falls, Ho’opi Falls (hike)

South Shore – Maha’ulepu Beaches and Arch, Poipu Beach (we really wanted to snorkel here. We heard it was great, we just didn’t have time. It is down the block from the hotel though)

BackCountry Adventures* (this supposedly books up weeks before)
Tubing and Zipline 808-245-2506/888-270-0555
Tubing adventure $103.12/pp; 45 minute tube, swim, lunch
Times? 8, 9, 10:30, 12:15, 1, 2:30

Kayak Adventures 808-826-9340

NaPali Kayak 808-826-6900

Re: Hawaii Honeymoon Review - very thorough!!

Maui

It’s hard to give an honest opinion about Maui because we are biased. We just loved Kauai that we were so upset to leave it and so Maui didn’t live up to our expectations. It was nice and parts of it were really pretty but it wasn’t a must-see island, although the shopping town I’ll tell you about later was great.

Hotel: ResortQuest Kaanapali Shores
The room was more like a mini-apartment. It had a kitchen, dining room table, living room and bedroom(although the bedroom needed more lighting). Don’t tell the hotel clerk that you will be using the safe. They charge like +$2/day for it and there is no way of them telling if you do use it or not, so definitely use it but don’t let them know.
The hotel was nice but it just was hard to adjust cause you weren’t wined and dined as you were at the Hyatt. We had $100 food and beverage credit and the Beach Club restaurant there and that was an added bonus. The food was great, especially for a light lunch, and it was nice to not have to spend money on meals. We went there every night for drinks and then sat in the hot tub. The last night we had the Hula Pie, OMG! It was the best hula pie in all of Hawaii! Definitely get one (good thing we only discovered them the last night there hahah).

Car: Hertz
Overall they were fine but nothing amazing. Enterprise was by far the best and we booked that ourselves. When we got to Hertz they had lost our reservation so that was a pain cause they had us fill out all this extra paperwork but in the end they found our reservation so there were no extra charges(which our TA would have reimbursed us for when we got back anyway). They gave us an exact car to go to on the lot which was a nice change from Alamo and our car was fine. We had a red mustang convertible, fun! Though the trunk was small and our suitcase had to go in the backseat again. This was only a problem on the last day when we had to drive around for most of the day with a suitcase in our backseat, but we worked it out with our hotel to hold on to our suitcases for most of the day(even though we had checked out).

Restaurants:
Bada Bings
This was in Kihei (South Maui) and was a “New Jersey” Italian Restaurant. Wasn’t too pricey either and was really good.

Beach Club (at ResortQuest Kaanapali Shores)
We had lunch there and it was really good. Also had a late night dinner and it was good as well. We had leftovers from that one night for dinner as well which also helped us save money. Glad to have had the food credit at a good place. It’s also fun cause it’s in the same area as one of the pools and hot tub so we can eat and drink and go swimming. Make sure though if you plan on eating in the dining room you have a coverup for your bathing suit, otherwise you can’t eat inside. They had different live music each night we went but that was on the weekends and I don’t know if they had it during the week.

Penne Pasta
It was in the town of Lahaina and it was a cute little fast food style Italian place. We wanted to spend less money on dinner since we had spent a lot in Kauai and this was a nice little suggestion from our hotel. You order at the cashier and then they bring it over to you.

Cheeseburger In Paradise
Had lunch here so I don’t know what the prices are for dinner. It was always crowded when we walked past at night though(it’s also in the town of Lahaina). The food was good and we had a shake as well which was yummy. It was very filling too which was good, held us all day pretty much.

Hula Cookies and Ice Cream
This was a great snack place in Ma’alaea. It’s in the same shopping center as the aquarium. The Hula cookie is very yummy – two cookies and ice cream. The Kona ice cream flavor was great too.

Things to do:
Town of Lahaina –
Go to Front Street and shop around. There are TONS of little shops and restaurants, great place for souvenirs for family and yourselves. We went there just about every night just to walk around since it’s on the water. Got ice cream at night and you could watch the sunset as well which was beautiful. There’s a bar on there which is supposed to be the best bar for night life for our age but every night we drank at whichever restaurant and didn’t feel like going out and partying it up but it looked like fun. In this town there is also the Banyan Tree. It is over an acre big and it is really cool to go see, it’s all one tree! Definitely stop and look at it, it’s at one end of the stores.

Ekahi - Haleakala Sunrise Tour*
808-887-9775/888-292-2422; $93.74/pp; hotel pick-up; breakfast at Pukalani Country Club
It was nice to have a van drive us really early in the morning for the Sunrise tour instead of waking up and driving ourselves. We grabbed a blanket from our hotel room and bundled up (we packed fleece pants, winter hat, gloves and sweatshirts and layered). Our tour guide was nice but talked way too much on the ride up when we were all trying to sleep. I did manage to sleep on the drive up though and we were one of the first bus tours to get up to the top of the Mountain, meaning we got the ideal spot to watch the sunrise(if we could’ve seen it). Our guide told us exactly where to stand. When we got up there at like 5am it was such an amazing sight. We bundled together in the blanket, which was romantic, and looked at billions of stars in the sky. Our whole tour was laughing together, waiting for the sun to come up. It finally started to and we got all excited and then the FOG ran in! We couldn’t see anything! Grrr, but we had lots of laughs. Slept some more on the ride down and then they took us to a country club for a breakfast which was yummy. After the tour we just went back to the hotel and slept for a few hours.
There is also a bike down tour that myH had wanted to do. In the end he was happy we didn’t do it cause he was really tired from waking up early and since we couldn’t even see the sunrise all he wanted to do was go back and sleep. I think most people who biked that day were upset because they couldn’t even see the sun, had to wake up early, and then had to bike down. But other people who saw the sunrise thought it was definitely worth it.
Our friends took a different bus tour up, but they couldn’t remember the name of it. They went somewhere else to eat, on the side of the mountain, and they said it was an amazing breakfast. Basically you need to ask your hotel what tour they suggest, that stops at their hotel to pick you up, and that’s how you decide which one to take. They are all going the same place and about the same price.

Drums of the Pacific Luau at the Grand Hyatt Maui* –
At our hotel there was a coupon for a 2 for 1 Luau (came to about $93 with tax)! This was great. We had only a few places we could use it. Originally we wanted the one at the Sheraton but they were booked up already. So we went with the Drums of the Pacific. I’m glad we did in the end. Price wise it was worth it with the coupon. We got there early for a good seat but it really was fine wherever you sat cause the stage was raised (unlike at some other luaus). The buffet was great – all the food was good and plenty of it. We even got up for seconds. The service was pretty good, they kept refilling our drinks without us asking for more. Though the mai-tais when you walk in are super watered down but the rest of the drinks aren’t. The show was good and we were glad we went there instead of the Old Lahaina Luau(rated the best in all of Hawaii) because at ours they had the fire dance and that was the best part of the Luau(it’s not part of an authentic luau so you won’t find it at the Old Lahaina one). He was amazing!

(The next three places are in South Maui and we did that all together)
Wailea -
We stopped at the Grand Wailea hotel. We had watched a travel channel show and they said this was one of the best hotels in all of Hawaii so we wanted to check it out. It was really pretty and the pools looked like a lot of fun(they had a swim up bar, huge water slide, rope swing, etc.) but you’re not allowed to swim in them if you’re not a member. But we did get to swim at their beach which I thought was one of the nicest beaches we went to. The water was so pretty and the beach was beautiful. Oh they charge you for parking if you are not a guest unless you buy something from one of their stores, so just buy like a bag snack and have them mark your valet ticket.

Makena –
We drove down here stopping a lot. First we stopped at the black sand beach. If you’re going to do the Road to Hana then this is not worth it. The sand wasn’t that black, I ended up calling it gray sand beach. We walked around by the Five Caves, maybe it would’ve been nicer if the water wasn’t as rough that day. Then we went to Big Beach which was really pretty. We went swimming here and I almost got swept out to sea, only cause the water was rough that day. Overall though I really enjoyed the beach, it was pretty and relaxing. We didn’t snorkel cause the water was too rough though. We drove farther down the road and were thinking of hiking to Fishbowl and Aquarium (two great snorkel spots) but there were guides on the road that said the water was just too rough to make it even worth it that day so we didn’t. They would’ve been hikes over lava rocks. We spent about 2 hours at Big Beach.

Kihei –
We drove back through here and shopped around a little, nothing amazing though. Though we did end up eating in one of the shopping villages here at Bada Bings and it was yummy.

(The next five places are in the West Maui area)
Olivine Pools –
This was a tough hike especially because when we went it was muddy which made the rocks extremely slippery and hard to go downhill. The drive to them was wild, I thought the road was crazier than the Road to Hana. We hiked down and no one was there. I mean the pools were pretty and we could see fish and crabs as well but we didn’t want to snorkel in them cause no one else was there(it just made us a little worried). On our way back up though people showed up so maybe we had just gone too early in the morning? This hike is only in the Maui Revealed book as well so make sure you have it so you can find it. The trail is kind of hard to see and we made it up on our own at times. Definitely wear your hiking water sneakers for this. You can see the mushroom shaped rock from here as well.

Nakalele Blowhole –
Unfortunately it wasn’t blowing that day but it’s supposed to be really nice. We pulled over and walked to the overlook before hiking down and I’m glad we did since it wasn’t blowing and the hike wouldn’t have been worth it.

Honolua Bay –
On the drive back from these other two spots we saw tons of cars pulled over and wondered what was going on. We asked two people who were walking from their car and said that Honolua Bay is an amazing snorkeling spot and they were definitely right! We are so glad we got out and went, so make sure to bring snorkel gear with you. A lot of people said they saw sea turtles but we didn’t where we were. It was a huge bag where you can snorkel all over. Lots of people are there. There were tons of fish, huge schools of them, and again they come right up to you(which I didn’t enjoy). We snorkeled for about an hour and a half straight and didn’t even cover the whole bay.

Pacific Jet Sports –
808-667-2066/866-667-2001
8am-5pm; $95 for 60 min; $15 extra rider; $65 for 30 min
We rented one Jet ski and took turns driving it. Unfortunately there are tons of rules with jet skiing which is why you’ll only find it here and with two companies. We only did it for a half hour but just some fun small activity that wasn’t as pricey. If you wear contacts though I definitely suggest renting the goggles cause the salt water hitting your eyes burns. Brian ended up taking over driving it cause I couldn’t keep my eyes open from the burning at the very end but we were laughing and having a good time.

Feast of Lahaina –
www.visitlahaina.com; 5-10pm; beer and wine garden; music
We lucked out. This festival only happens once a year and we were there to experience it. I found out about it online so check to see if the weekend you’re there if it is going on. All the restaurants in the Town of Lahaina are there and you buy little coupons that buy you food from each place. That way you spend like $3 to try a little from each restaurant, that’s how we knew we wanted to go to Cheeseburger in Paradise later that week. We got some free souvenirs as well and there was Hawaiian music being played. There was also a beer garden where you could sit, drink, and relax. We had a lot of fun. It is not in the shopping area of town, it’s on a huge baseball field across from it on the main road. We took a taxi over so we could drink and not have to look for parking which was horrible.

Road to Hana –
Got up early and hit the road. We picked up the cd guide for this the night before (we kept it for you, but just a warning it is BORING! But we laughed and made fun of it a lot). Pack some snacks for yourselves and take a bottle of water. Basically you can tell where to stop to see waterfalls because everyone is pulled over. We left early to start which we highly suggest cause you will be gone all day.
We took the Maui Revealed book suggestion and drove down Nahiku Road. It was a really pretty road, made us feel like we were back on Kauai. The road was narrow though, be warned. We stopped at the end and it was nice that it was secluded.
We tried to go to the Blue Pools but the people who live over in that area were rude and put up a sign blocking us. The book said the road is bad for rental cars but it wasn’t, it was just the people. Take a chance and see if they act the same way cause it looked pretty cool to go check it out.
Waianapanapa – Definitely stop here. This is where the Black Sand beach is and some water caves. The black sand beach was really cool and there’s a little cave off to the end of it that you can walk through. There’s a little hike that has some more water caves, you can even go swimming in. It was a nice spot to stop but definitely bug spray yourself up before you walk around. There’s bathrooms here if you need to use it.
Other places we stopped – Wailua Valley State Wayside Park, Wailua Falls(pretty!), Waikoni Falls(pretty too)
Hana Bay – this is where we stopped for lunch at Tutus. It was a small little grill place but the food was alright since we hadn’t packed a full lunch and we were hungry. Sat on some picnic benches. Bring cash for this.
Red Sand Beach – this is right near where we stopped for lunch. It was a tiny small hike. Since it was cloudy and rainy the day we went you couldn’t see how red the beach was but the water was pretty and if it was sunny I think it would’ve been worth it.
7 Sacred Pools – we got all the way to the end and were looking forward to swimming in here and hiking around and because of the weather we weren’t allowed to(the river was too wild). We did the hike to the Infinity Pool but that was also too wild to sit in. Oh well.
Venus Pools – This is only in the Maui Revealed book and was one of my favorite spots. It made the Road to Hana worth it I think. It’s a hard trail to find because it’s actually behind barbed wire, so we thought we couldn’t do it. We saw locals though coming back from it and climbing over the barbed wire and they showed us how to do it and we are glad we did(use towels to cover the wire). Short easy hike and great, beautiful location! If the sun was out also it would’ve been a lot prettier but it still really was. You can jump off any of the rocks, it’s deep enough all over. Definitely stop here if you do the Road to Hana.
Driving back – make sure to start back early enough so you don’t drive back in the dark. Brian took turns with other cars leading as kind of a buffer because the bridges are all one lane and the curves on the road are sharp so it’s nice to have a car in front of you so you don’t have to be as careful. It was just long going back but the road wasn’t as bad as most people made it sound. I think the road on the north end of West Maui was a rougher road.

Iao Needle –
We just stopped here cause we had some extra time before returning to the airport. It’s nice, but we didn’t do the hikes cause we didn’t want to leave the suitcases for too long in the car unattended (since one of ours didn’t fit in the trunk).

Other Activities:
Molokini/Turtletown Snorkel tours – lots of people did this and we wanted to but we snorkeled a lot (especially at Honolua Bay) and ran out of time. Also we had wanted to save money on Maui so we did more free activities but I heard this is a lot of fun.

Kaanapalishoresactivities.com

South East Maui –
We wanted to check out more this area but there was an earthquake over a year ago that ruined a bridge to get here so we couldn’t. If it is fixed I’d go and check it out.

Mt. Haleakala hikes – the Sliding sands hike sounded fun we just didn’t have time to do it.

Maui’s Winery – Ulupalakua Ranch
It is open 9am-5pm; mauiwine.com; they were closed when we finally had time to go

Surf Lessons – Brian wanted to do this but we just didn’t have time.

Couples Massage – we had made a reservation for this but since we felt like we had spent a lot of money on other activities we canceled this. I would suggest doing it though of course! My H promised he’ll take me for a present one day.
