buttercream or fondant??

I'm trying to decide which I would want for my wedding cake. All of the pictures I find of cakes I like are fondant but honestly I've never even tasted it. Which is better?? Both my sister and sister in law to be had buttercream.

Buttercream....if the baker is really good, they can get it as smooth as fondant...in my opinion it tastes much better too. My baker said fondant is more for the look....

Buttercream is much cheaper than fondant and in my opinion, tastier. One reason to go with fondant is if your wedding is outdoors, I hear that fondant can last much longer in high temperatures.

Fondant costs more $$ b/c it looks better than buttercream. But buttercream tastes better.

Fondant is very sweet and chewy. Most people don't like it...If you like the look, have the baker put fondant with the buttercream underneath. That's what we are having because the cake design we chose has fondant with shells, starfish, etc. Guests will push aside the fofndant and eat the buttercream.

My mother bakes and she will use anything but fondant, no taste & very thick, but it does finish a cake a little more smooth

i recently had wedding cake that had fondant on it and wasn't a fan at all.....i prefer buttercream, but FH was saying that we might not be able to put a cake topper on the cake if it's butter cream....apparently fondant is thicker and won't mush in when you put something on top of it?

I used to bake so i can help you out a bit.

Fondant is mostly all powdered sugar. It isn't really sweet, but it isntreally un sweet either. It depends on how the place makes it and what else they put into it.

I like fondant b/c you can do so much with it, cakes look so smooth and flawless. However, if you use italian buttercream you can get the same effect , that smooth look but with buttercream. That is if the person is skilled enough they can make it so smooth you cant even tell its buttercream.

It just depends on the techniques the baker is familiar with and what they normally do.

the only downside to fondant is that it may peel off from each piece after plating. Buttercream is already stuck to the cake. You know what i mean?

I hope this helps!

I had buttercream, and we put a cake topper on it. I don't know why anybody would say you can't put a topper on buttercream.

I think fondant tastes like paper, and I don't think it really looks all that much better than buttercream can. Unless you're doing something super fancy there's no need for fondant, so to me it's really not worth the extra expense.
