what does fondant taste like?

what does fondant taste like?

I just found out that my hall does not let whipped cream cakes stay out for display during the reception for fear of it going sour. (yes I know other halls do this, but the Milleridge doesn't )
SO my question. Buttercream or fondant?
I really don't like buttercream (blech) so what does fondant taste like?

Really? I didn't know that. They do lsit Whipped cream as a choice. Thats' what I was leaning towards. I may have them just bring it out at the end anyway.
I have a fear of something hapening to it--although its nice to see it before it is cut up.

I've heard fondant is yucky, and so some people put a layer of butter cream underneath to make it taste better. However, I think that's what my coworker had & my boss said she loved it, it tasted like pure sugar.
Its expensive, so I don't know if you can taste it. Thre is such a thing as rolled fondant for makign your own, Idon't kwo where you get it. Somw kind of specialty store. And you'd probably have to buy a whole roll/tube, I don't know how much it costs.

I definitely think buttercream tastes better, fondant has a weird after taste. You could probably check your local bakery to see if they make cakes with fondant and go sample it.

buttercream can taste REALLY good...... but it depends on the bakery... the one i tried at my hall didnt taste like anything, but ive had good ones before.....

i think some people have said fondant is an aquired taste....its suppose to be like a sugar paste?

I have to be honest and say I really dislike butercream so I won't eat cake with it. I do LOVE whipped cream though...but I am having fondant I don't think it taste weird or funny - but let me say each person has their own taste - so I would see if there is a place that would let you taste it.

You can ask PrincessRose, Tammyjill, Marcela1654 about my shower cake it had fondant on it and I thought it was delicious! everyone at the party seemed to eat the fondant

Maybe you could order some cakes from the Milleridge bakery to test.
That is what I am hoping to do.

tastes like crap to be honest. Many places make the cakes a week in advance when using fondant.
Buttercream is considered the best thing to use by top notch pastry chefs.
Get what you like obviously. Fondant can look nicer and you can do a lot more with it. To me - the taste was more important though and the vast majority (including myself) prefer buttercream

Oh my goodness... I always thought the fondant cakes were so pretty & had my heart set on one! I never thought for a second that it would taste bad Now I guess I have another decision to make...

IMO Fondant looks better than it tastes

Re: what does fondant taste like?

Fondant is more for looks than for taste. It gives the cake a smoother finish and better lines.

Most bakers do put a layer of buttercream under fondant because it really doesn't have a taste.

There are flavored fondants, but usually those comes from specialty bakers. I hated the taste of fondant until I tasted a sample from Bijoux Doux of vanilla fondant and it was so yummy!! See if maybe the Milleridge can do that?

My FH is a pastry chef (he does construction now) and I will ask him about this. I agree it looks sooo nice, if it does not taste good, how about a small fondant cake and then a sheet cake w/ buttercream (in the back) for the cake for the guests? (just a thought).

I tasted fondant and HATED it. I felt like I was eating chemicals or some kind of really gross toothpaste.
Buttercream is soooo yummy!

I have the same problem as you because they told me they won't do whipped cream in August. I don't really like butter cream but I tried fondant and loved the way it tasted. To me it almost tastes a little like marshmellows (not that texture though). It has a sweeter taste.

Re: what does fondant taste like?

I spoke to FH and he said fondant is a sugarry paste which is not very tasty and that putting buttercream on b/f the fondant is not an option...but it looks nice. He said we can get a 'pretty cake' and a cake to serve...
