not allowed to have cake topper?!

not allowed to have cake topper?!

So I went for my first of the final appointments at my reception hall and they inform me we cannot have a cake topper on the cake unless it 'weighs nothing'.
For pictures they pop it on top, then they display it in front. They say it will squish the cake.
Anyone hear of this, sounded odd to me. Now I have to add a weightless topper to my list of things to do....

I couldn't find a topper that I loved so we went with fresh flowers.

Edited to add that I have not heard of a reception hall refusing to allow a cake topper to be used.

It is pretty common depending on what your cake topper is. The Lenox, Llardo, Precious Moments, etc. ones are too heavy to be onto of the cake all night. It always looks niced displayed next to the cake until time comes for pictures and the cake cutting!

I have never heard of this and I am hoping that my RH doesn't tell me the same thing, although my cake topper weighs next to nothing. You can always check ebay for a light weight cake topper.

i have definitely heard of that - cake is very soft, and especially if it's stacked, the weight of a topper can cause it to sink or even collapse onto the other layers. i don't know of any cake toppers that weigh 'nothing' but if you use a monogram, they generally weigh less than the traditional bride and groom toppers.

I have never heard anything like this, what does the hall care so much, so what, its your cake you can do whatever you want with it

i think they are worried the top of the cake won't be able to handle the weight of most fancy cake toppers. a lenox topper is gorgeous but if you keep that on a cake for 4 straight hours on display---it could squish the cake and then the bride and groom would be upset!!!

i say go for what you want. for us, we didn't like any cake toppers so we just did flowers

i agree that even if it is your cake and you can do whatever want but how would you feel if at the begining of the night the cake looks great, then when it comes time to take the pictures, the weight if the topper has squished the whole top tier ( that you want to save anyway for your 1 yr anniversary). that is all you are going to see in your pictures, and they probably have had this happen so many times are are tired if getting blamed for it so they emilanate the problem all together by saying you cant do it... not that is a bad thing, they are just saving you from being upset on your wedding day and looking out for your best interest!

I think those plastic/resin ones are very light and inespensive.... you know the traditional ones.

They probably just dont want you putting a Lladro on top b/c its heavy and would require a lot of work to stablize.

Re: not allowed to have cake topper?!

I had bought my aunt & uncle a lladro cake topper and they put it on the cake for the whole wedding...well half of the wedding, since it slid off and crashed to the floor shattering into a million pieces!!

I'm either not getting a heavy one ( I like the new initial ones in silver) or leaving on the table next to the cake and then just putting it on for pics.

Re: not allowed to have cake topper?!

I had a swarovski cake topper ... it was soo heavy that it went on the middle of the cake, not the top ...

are you allowed to put a topper in the middle of the cake so it wont weigh down the cake?

Re: not allowed to have cake topper?!

this actually is very common...but i think it depend on the cake. I could be wrong, but i think having a tiered cake can be more of a problem then if it were a stacked cake. I personally wanted our topper in front of the cake untill the cake cutting & picture taking...i just liked how it looked...and it really was a good idea - because when we put it on top of the cake for photos, it was so scary!!! good luck! it will look beautiful either way!
