I wasn't a candidate for Lasik, so I had another surgery called PRK.

I had a really rough time in the beginning, my surgery was Aug 18 or 19 (this past summer) and my vision finally reached 20/20 in December.

My sister had Lasik and did really awesome.

If you want anymore details, please FM.

My DH had it done almost 3 years ago. He says its the best thing he ever did for himself and the best $ he ever spent.

My husband had Lasik last May, and he loves the results .. his vision is BETTER than 20/20 and he was perfectly fine the next day

I wasn't a candidate for Lasik at all ... my eyesight is horrible. Besides I am so chicken I am too scared to have it , even though my DH tells me I'm crazy to be this scared!

Re: Lasik

what makes you not a candidate for Lasik??

can your eyesight deteriorate when you start to get older again... or will it stay that way for a long time??

about how much did it cost??

thanks so much girls!! you all are the best!

Many people I know got Lasik. They love it. None, regret it.
I would do it in a heartbeat, if I could afford it.

For me, my cornea was not smooth enough.

Basically what that means and why I wasn't candidate for Lasik is, when they cut the outer membrane of your eye and flip back, then correct your vision with the laser, then smooth the membrane back of your eye, they were not sure if the membrane would go back smoothly over my eye.

So, my other option was PRK, which means that they take the whole membrane off, correct your vision with the laser, and the membrane grows back.

So, that is was PRK is more painful and the healing takes alot longer. My membrane had to grow back.

Tara , I'm pretty sure what you wound up having (the PRK) was what they told me I would have to have .. they told me all these reasons why I wasn't a candidate for Lasik, something about the surface of my cornea being irregular ... I'm not really sure because I kind of put it out of my head when I wasn't a candidate for the regular procedure

And since I went for the consult only about a month before our wedding, I was waaaay too leery to have it and risk not being 'myself' on our wedding day. DH keeps trying to convince me to go for it now, but I'm STILL SERIOUSLY chicken

After hearing (and seeing!) Tara's experience for PRK I don't think I would ever put myself through that pain and suffering. But, I saw Wendy I believe a few days after her Lasik surgery at a GTG and she said everything was great and she was seeing fine the next day...I'm still worried about long term effects, and whether or not the vision would return to pre-surgery eventually..

ETA: My dad had Lasik and had no problems whatsoever.

Felicia, you were smart not to do it a month before your wedding.

I did and I regret doing it that time. It caused me and my family and Poor Phil alot more stress.

I am glad I did it in the long run, but the healing process for me TOOK MONTHS!!!!!!

Let me know if you decide to do it in the future. It is awesome not having to wear glasses, but there were so many times I regretted before my vision reached 20/20.

Beth, you were such a big support for me during that time. I was really scared.

I remember going to your office with my big black glasses to rest my eyes.

Remember the headaches I was having?

Wow Tara I had no idea you went through all that .. You are a LOT stronger than I am! I just knew if I wasn't seeing clearly on my wedding day, I would have made Anthony's life miserable and I already drive hiim crazy with all my worriesome nonsense so in retrospect I'm glad I just decided to put it off.

I still debate having it done, it would be great not to have to wear my contacts anymore .. but I will definitely let you know if/when I decide what to do ..

Thanks for the info!

LASIK was awesome for me.

I had mine done at the TLC in Garden City (on the perimeter of Roosevelt Field). It was quick (unbelievably so) and painless. I went home, slept for a few hours and could SEE later that night.

It's really been amazing!!! I am sooooo happy I did it.

I had LASIK done there too, about a year and a half ago. It was the greatest! FM me if you have any questions!

Ditto for me - I had it done in July at the same place - best investment I ever made. It is truly unbelieveable.

Yes, you are awake and see things happening to your eye, but you don't feel anything as your eye numbed. My doctor gave me a valium prior to the procedure to help calm the nerves.

I just had PRK on one eye on Friday and am recovering. I will do the other eye after the first eye heals and I have regain somewhat normal vision. Right now it is blurred due to the top layer of the cornea growing back.

I had PRK/LASEK because I had a -8 to -9 nearsightedness which is on the high side so I needed to have more corneal tissue removed to correct my vision so with PRK you apply the laser at the surface rather than in the middle of the cornea, thereby giving me more tissue to work with and also I had more of dry eyes to begin with and with PRK it was better for that condition.

You should go for a free consultation with a few doctors to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK and then you should do some research about the procedure. LASIK does not create as much of a disruption to your routine as you can see pretty well right after surgery but with PRK/LASEK there is a period of time that the top layer of your corneas needs to grow back and heal. It's taking about 3 days to grow back but it will take longer for the sureface to smooth out and to regain clear vision.

Re: Lasik

I had lasak (same thing as PRK just slightly different laser) - just as painful - there is a big difference between Lasik and Lasak or PRk

i now have good vision - but the first few days were really rough

I was not a candiate for lasik because my cornea was too thin

it hurt but i would still recommend my surgeon - i only was only in pain for about 3 days - then i could see pretty good

but if you are a candiate for Lasik- i would do it- both my brothers had that type and were better the next day - my younger brother actually had the surgery on friday and left for college for the 1st time on saturday afer stopping at the doctor's office to make sure everything was ok
