I think it's a really nice fun thing to do to celebrate the engagement and get everyone together, but not totally necessary.. I didn't have one.

Yeah, I say do it. Especially if your an 08' bride. Gives us practice for the real thing! I'm having mine in March. I'm so excited. I havent been the center of attention since my sweet 16

Re: Engagement party or not??

FILs wanted to throw us one - but then our guest list went up to 100 which was only 20 less than our wedding guest list! so despite lots of fighting we refused a party - i really never wanted one. . .

after much more fighting FILs and my parents decided that we HAD to do something ( why? idk!)

we had a small dinner of about 40 people - my immediate family, and only his aunts and uncles bc he has over 20 cousins. . . and we had a nice time - just in a restaurant with excellent food

if you like them you should definitely have one!

I'm embarrassed to say this, because I sound so cheap... but I'm paying for my own wedding and couldn't afford to do an engagement party, especially when etiquette dictates that guests aren't expected to bring gifts. I mean, if I were going to get some flatware or something out of the deal, maybe... but... okay, I sound awful, back into the corner I shall shrink...

aww that didnt sound bad at all - first of all people will always bring money - we started our wedding fund with our engagement dinner money and that was only 40 people!! no one would come empty handed and most people do give money ( we only got two gifts and those people ALSO gave money!)

i wouldnt have had one if we had to pay tho - i completely understand!

We didn't have one for pretty much the same reason...we are paying for a majority of the wedding ourselves and thats easily a couple thousand dollars towards the wedding. If you can afford it or somebody else will do it all for then go for it!

I say yes!!!!!

It is a great way to celebrate your engagement and give everyone a chance to go goo-goo and ga-ga over you guys....

It's a trial run for the wedding with being the center of attention and including everyone!!!

Like Matilde said....no one will come empty handed (well most wont) and who doesn't love presents???

And with most of our weddings 2 years away....it gives us all something to look foward too!!!

My engagement party didn't cost a lot at all. We invited our close family and friends because we wanted everyone to get a chance to meet before the wedding. Our mothers and I cooked (FH is not exactly a guru in the kitchen) and had a party in my backyard. It was tons of fun and everyone gave us something, mostly money. I didn't want to have a pre-wedding or anything. Just something simple to celebrate this huge step in our lives with the people we love the most.

We are having one in the middle of October to celebrate. I think it is a good idea to get both familys and close friends together to celebrate. We are paying for our wedding too, so that is why we are having it at my future sister-in-laws house and having some family member help to cook and help with a few other things. So we can have fun and not spend a lot of money. Plus it's always fun to have a party.

yea we are paying for the whole wedding..if not the majority of it... my mom wanted to throw me the party and then jesse told his mom and she wanted to help so they are splitting the cost.

i mean most people will not come empty handed and we are gonna throw what we get into the wedding fund ..

but its what u want to do.

Don't feel embarassed about that. I doubt very much if I will be having one as well. My FI and I are the only ones paying for the wedding. You have to do what's good for you.

My FH and I are undecided if we are having one. He wants one and I don't, so we'll see what happens
