Jewish Brides- What music are you using for ceremony?

Hi all,

I have been trying to think of good ceremony music for a Jewish wedding- meaning no 'Here comes the bride' for me and not sure what I want for the bridal party to walk into and for the recessional.

Was wondering if you ladies can post your ideas so I can get help on this... it's at a point that its' been stressing me out a bit.

TIA, Danielle

It depends whether you want to go with Jewish music or plain classical music, or a mixture of both. I have seen all of those options work out well. I used all Jewish music played by a live klezmer band and it was really fun, but you don't have to go that far. Do you have someone who is playing your ceremony music? A single violinist, a flute, a clarinet, a string quartet, it can all work. We used songs like 'Erev Shel Shoshanim' and 'Hanava'a Babanot' for the processionals and 'Simon Tov' for the recessional. Those are just ideas - you can use any kind of Jewish song that you like for the processional and traditionally something upbeat and lively for the recessional. If you don't want to go all Jewish, you can use classical pieces like Pachelbel's 'Canon,' 'Air on the G String' (if you can get past the name ) or any number of others. Historically it's been good practice to stay away from the traditional wedding songs, which were written by Wagner (an anti-Semite) and Mendelssohn (who converted to Christianity) and any classical pieces that mention Christian themes in the titles (aka, Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring).

OK, this was way too long - I'm a musician so I can get carried away on this subject! Feel free to FM me if you want more.

HTH!

I don't have live music just a DJ.

Yes I was planning to stay away (for the reasons that you listed) to traditional wedding music.

Thanks for the ideas- any and all help is greatly appreciated

The Rabbi, bridal party, my grandfather and my husband walked in to the Brandenburg Concerto no. 4 in G.
I walked in to Pachelbel's Canon.

We used traditional music:

Al Kol Eleh for everyone else and Dodi Li when I walked down the aisle. It was really pretty, and we found them both on a CD the rabbi gave us, so doable even if you don't want live music. (We had ours live using a violinist).

this is my area of expertise:

there is a lot to choose from for jewish wedding music.
Dodi Li
Erev Shel Shoshanim
V'eirastich Li
Scalerica d'Oro

etc

I suggest checking out the Jewish Wedding Anthology called Kol Dodi published by Transcontinental Music.
You can purchase the CD's and/or the book itself.
Kol Dodi

I would be glad to discuss your music options with you.
Please FM if you have further questions.
(I will be out of town from tomorrow through Friday so I will not be able to have internet access for those days.)
