To Video or Not to Video, that is the question??

To Video or Not to Video, that is the question??

My FH said he doesn't want a video of our wedding because:

1. He hates himself on tape
2. He doesn't think we'll ever watch it
3. Videographers are often so intrusive

I'm worried that we'll regret not having it. Plus, I met with Duet and they made it a point to tell me that they do not use that BIG LIGHT that I just hate to see when I'm at a wedding. But, I hadn't even asked, so I thought it was a good sign that they offered that information.

What does everyone think?

I think everyone should get a video. It is a living/breathing memory of the happiest day of your life with all your friends and family present. There will be things that happened that you will forget or miss and it's fun to see over again.

And, sadly they will not always be present and even if you don't watch the video frequently, believe me you will TREASURE having it.

Also, I think for the most part videographers are NOT obtrusive at all anymore. We hardly noticed our videographers at our wedding.

IMO, it's the only 'live' memory of your event. My FH also doesn't see the need for it but all the girls I know watch their wedding video all the time. You don't have to go for the most extravagant video package out there but it's nice to have a live version to look back on.
In another note, my grandmother passed away about 6 months after my cousins wedding. She talked on the video and you have no idea what it is like to hear her voice again. For that reason alone it is worth it to me to capture the most important people of my day. But that's just my feeling on it.
I agreed with my FH that I didn't need 'A Wedding Story' just a simple video to highlight the most important events and most important people of the day.
I also met with Duet this week and thought they had a lot of knowledge about what they were doing for photo & video. I haven't made a decision yet but they were great so far!

We are not doing a professional video because my FI doesn't think we'll watch it...and to be honest, I think he's right. Plenty of our family will be bringing video cameras and as long as I have the ceremony and the toasts and the dances...I'll be happy. It's $1,000 I can use elsewhere.

definately get a video, ESPECIALLY if you plan on having kids so you can passs it down and show them.

Most videographers are very unobtrusive and you hardly know that they are their. if you want a cheap one that is good (bellarino) has a basic one for 1,000.

We are using Duet for both photo & video. And I feel that they are very respectful and will not be intrusive.

I actually met with a make up artist (and booked her) that told me that she really liked working Duet. The reason why (and I really thought this was cool perspective that I had never even thought of), was that they respected her space.

Remember, the photo/video people are around the bride and so is the makeup artist. She has eyeliner pencils, lip liner, mascara, etc.. and in the past she has experienced some photographers/videographers who are very aggressive and bump into her. The last thing she wants to do is poke the bride with an eyeliner pencil.

I just thought that was perspective that I had not even thought of and tells alot about what you can expect.

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck!

FH and I are probably not doing video - if anything we are thinking of hiring a college film student to tape the ceremony part. That is the most important part for me that I would like to be able to show to my children.

Fh and I went back and forth on this. We eventually decided to get a video. I have my Dad on video 8 months b/4 he passed away now I am so glad that I have that video.

I to hate hate being on video so when we booked them we made sure to tell them that we did not want them in our faces all night.

I LOVE my video.
The day goes so fast.
I think you'll be glad if you get one.

I agree with most on here, it is the only 'live' coverage fo your wedding day.

They say that pictures say a thousand words is true. But to have actual live video of the event is priceless. How many times has our parents reached into the closet and pulled out the old 8mm reel and set it up and we are often amazed that they have footage of their wedding.

It's your wedding day, go for it all. It doesn't have to be the most expensive package.

If you can afford it, I really have to say to do it. Of course everyone has their own opinions and right to choose but I have to say my video is more valuable than my pictures.

I hate being in front of cameras and I never speak on them - I hide from them...but on my wedding day I never noticed the camera all day and it was fine. Then watching the video at first I wanted to put my hands over my eyes but it was great and it was comfortable. The good thing was you never heard me talking (except during ceremony - vows and stuff). Since I had a DJ, they plug into their system and we were not miked during the reception...with a band it would have been different.

I have to say during my wedding planning - I wondered if it was necessary and I felt pictures were most important and now the video is my favorite!!! It captured more emotion and more of the big picture than pictures could. It also captured so many of the little things my pictures did not. I am glad I have one - I have watched mine several times and not sick of it yet - a year later (just make sure you get all raw footage!)!!

Do the video......... That is the only 'live' memory you will have of your wedding day.

I am in the same position! FI hates video. Everyone keeps telling me that we will regret not getting it for all the reasons above but when I ask couples married 2 years, 6 years or more....they can count the number of times they have watched it (any part of it) on one hand. I personally am not a video person, I think I will watch it once and then it will collect dust. So I think that I am going to find a college film student to tape the ceremony, and possibly the first dance and toast. (Jennyg just did this for her wedding, she may be willing to give you the name of who she used!) Because of those I have talked to who have it those are the only parts they have ever watched.
My Opinion, is that there is better places in my wedding planning process to spend the $1500 that most of these places charge (although you can get an unedited version for less but I am less likely to watch the unedited version than the edited one)

FH and I did not want a video. I'm not a video person and every time FH hears the word wedding video he runs so I couldn't see spending money for one.

However.........I did hire a videographer to tape just the ceremony at the church. They will start at the house, capture people arriving and stay at the church until we leave. To me the church is the ACTUAL wedding. I am happy with my decision and will not second guess it.

I hired a great photographer who I know will capture the special moments. I am a picture fanatic and I would rather have a ton of pictures than a video of my reception. Its just my opinion on the subject. You need to do what you feel is right.

I'm sure whatever you decide will be perfect

My DH had the same issues. Didn't think it was necessary. Didn't want the shining lights. Didn't want the added expense. But having had our wedding just 3 weeks ago, I say, GET THE VIDEO! The day was such a whirlwind, I only caught glimpses of the cocktail hour, I barely remember the ceremony. I know I felt like I was floating during our first dance but I would love to see how it really looked, in live action. There are so many things that a picture can't capture that a video can.

I recommend WILD ROSE VIDEO. Speak to Marie. She has hand-held many a bride. She is always available to help, and not just with videos, on flowers, hair, etc. Go see their samples, Bill is an amazing editor and they are not over the top expensive.

Not to be a downer, but my sis was killed in a car accident a few years ago. I know my mom cherishs every video she was on. Also, if you have any grandparents, they aren't getting any younger and it might be nice to have them on tape where you can hear their voices. So video, YEA, its a must for me.

i know how you fell about the video...at first we wern't going to do it either... I figured that we could save money and we wouldn't watch it. But everytime I told someone we weren't having a video they thought we were crazy. so... we decided to have one.

I think if you can, you should definately get the video. The pictures only capture still moments, but the video brings back the feeling of the wedding. Video will capture the mood, not just of you, but of the whole wedding.

Also, you can ask your videographer to do a short version of the video (either alone or in addition to the video). That can be 30 - 40min video containing only the highlights of your wedding. This, you and others, will definately watch...

At least the short version, I know I will watch (and force others) again and again!
