Saw this on BHB, they posted an article and somebody mentioned it on 09 too. They estimate about 15,000 teachers will be laid off in NYC.
UGh its just horrible news after horrible news. Macy's said they will lay off about 7k-10k ppl and Microsoft did the same, and keep hearing all these insanely high numbers. Supposedly February is going to be worse than January. When are things going to get better already

Re: 15,000 job cuts for NYC teachers
Things are getting out of control! I bet our nation never thought we'd suffer another depression. My prayers go out to all people and their family on LIW with hopes that none of us are affected.
To my fellow teachers with tenure....isn't it a relief to know that we have a permanent position??? I counted down the years, months, weeks, days, hours and minutes until my tenure!!!
I just don't get WHY and HOW things could get so bad!

bc people get greedy and only think of themselves. It's horrible and disgusting and those at fault dont even care and still are greedy, these CEO's still care only about their salary.

I heard this was contingent on Obama's bail out and how $$ the city gets...it could be a scare tactic to passing the bill...I work for the DOE so this so scary....I have 5 years in...dont know how many years until it would get to 15,000 plus Im a guidance counselor so if it's by liscense there are many less GC than teachers which would make me more vulnerable to lay off's ahhhhhhhh

Re: 15,000 job cuts for NYC teachers
The scary part is that NYC classes are already so big, how can they cut this many teachers??? Seriously there will be 50 kids in a class....my middle school has 36 in a class as it is!

I know, what do they plan on doing. I went to school in queens and yeah definitely had over sized classes.

Re: 15,000 job cuts for NYC teachers
Part of the problem is the UFT contract..the last contract made it so if a teacher is excessed and doesent find a position they will get paid . So there are all these teachers subbing, covering classes etc..I guess they will excess those with the least time and place the excessed teachers I dont know how it will work but talk about scary
Its so ironic bc one of the perks to working in a school USED to be job security ! ha ..not so much

No I know that. I work in a five-school district and between the five schools and with all those who started under me, they'd need to lay off a lot of people so I feel safe. I hear you though...those who work in a one-school district can be fired...it's scary!

Its just so upsetting They are also talking about laying off in nassau county, police and other workers...terrible
I filled that out last week....this is just all so scary!
well maybe it won't happen hopefully. Maybe there will be a miracle in the next few short months and things will all turn around

Re: 15,000 job cuts for NYC teachers
When I worked in the city I had like 30 kids and more in my classes...it was hard I don't know how they can justify cutting teachers when they still need more to lower the class sizes...praying that no one here gets affected by this !!!!!

Re: 15,000 job cuts for NYC teachers
I know. I was just talking to one of my friends who is a teacher, and its really scary. I planned on leaving my job at a college to go back to teaching this fall. BECAUSE, within 5 years of getting my certification, I have to teach for two years, so I HAVE to go back this year. BUT i dont know if its actually smart to leave a secure job right now. I actually doubt i'll be able to get a teaching position now this fall, you know. I dont know what to do. I cant believe how F'ed up the economy is becoming,
