15,000 job cuts for NYC teachers

Original post by Espo22

Saw this on BHB, they posted an article and somebody mentioned it on 09 too. They estimate about 15,000 teachers will be laid off in NYC.

UGh its just horrible news after horrible news. Macy's said they will lay off about 7k-10k ppl and Microsoft did the same, and keep hearing all these insanely high numbers. Supposedly February is going to be worse than January. When are things going to get better already

I know. I was just talking to one of my friends who is a teacher, and its really scary. I planned on leaving my job at a college to go back to teaching this fall. BECAUSE, within 5 years of getting my certification, I have to teach for two years, so I HAVE to go back this year. BUT i dont know if its actually smart to leave a secure job right now. I actually doubt i'll be able to get a teaching position now this fall, you know. I dont know what to do. I cant believe how F'ed up the economy is becoming,

Could you get an extension? At least until the economy is more stable...
I know, now I understand why they use the term 'depression'

I was going to try and call someone tomorrow to ask? Would you know who I would have to call?

I would try the state ed dept website first and get the number there. You'll prob have to apply for an extension in writing. Or call the personnel/HR dept in the college you work at. They are usually familiar with the laws etc.

Thanks, I was assuming the state dept first. I was thinking of an extension given the circumstances, but dont know how long they'll extend it, you know. Thanks a lot though!

This is just so scary. Honestly i don't think any job is safe anymore even if you have tenure/seniority.

The scary part is that NYC classes are already so big, how can they cut this many teachers??? Seriously there will be 50 kids in a class....my middle school has 36 in a class as it is!

I know, what do they plan on doing. I went to school in queens and yeah definitely had over sized classes.

Do you remember the size of our classes at Bryant? I can't....

I'm not a teacher, but layoffs are immenent in my company. February is the make or break month since it's the end of Q4 and they need to get payroll, real estate, etc off the bottom line by the end of the fiscal year which ends on March 31st. It really is very scary.

I pray for each and every one of you that everything turns out okay!!!

It's so sad. It isn't fair that children will have to sacrifice their education.

The world is becoming a very scary place :(
