Original post by TnOiOnL

Sorry to be a downer on such a happy board, but girls, we have to remember 9-11!

9-11 changed my life entirely. It saddens me, it angers me, it scares me, but in the same breath- it has strengthened me, it made me grow up QUICK, it truly has changed my life.

I will never ever forget the day. I got off the LIRR in Penn at around 7:30 something I remember I was listening to the new album 'Toxicity' by System of a Down [which if any of you know this album, is eerily coincidental to the situation] And I remember hearing a plane overhead and seeing the man in front of me looking up to the sky. I simply turned my headphones up louder and took off down 34th St.

I arrived to Park Ave, midtown, and got into my building.. a few short minutes later I heard that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers .... We were all SO upset. THEN we heard about the second tower. This is when we all realized, holy fckin sht we're being ATTACKED. We were running all around trying to call people and find quarters for pay phones as our cells didn't work. I remember going outside and looking to my left [uptown] and the sky was bright blue, the most beautiful sky ever. Then I looked to my right [downtown] and it was the scariest sight ever. Sky was black. All I could see was death.

A very very very long story short, DH [who was my BF of 3 years at the time] made contact with me, and then I got a call from my mother. The phone calls were coming in non stop but my mom finally had spoken to my aunt [the one who made my wedding dress] and she had me meet up with her and the rest of my family on 3rd Ave somewhere. That's when we walked over the 59th Street bridge, looking to our right at the skyline completely up in smoke. It was the saddest, scariest sight I'd even seen, and have ever seen to this day. We got into Queens and my brother came in from Nassau to pick us all up in a van.

I was nothing but relieved to be home with my family, but I could not stop praying & thinking about everyone ELSE. The people that I never met in my life. The ones I never will meet in my life. The ones who I HAVE met since that day... So many lives were lost and all for what???

That morning at 7am I was a 19 year old punk @ss just trying to make a life for myself, ignorant as all hell, and in my own la-la-land. Don't get me wrong, I was never a self-centered kid who didn't care about anything but myself. But by 7pm I truly changed my entire life. I completely matured, I cared about politics, I cared about our government and our city. Things that I'd never put into perspective were all too clear to me.

I would not change it for the world. I am THANKFUL that I was in NYC on 9-11. I am THANKFUL that I did not lose anyone. And I am THANKFUL that I am compassionate enough to post this and tell any of you girls out there that I was and still am praying for you and your families. The ones who were, and weren't, affected by this day. I am deeply moved by those who have lost and have moved on. YOU are the strongest person I will ever not know.

Please girls, lets pray today, for all those out there that we know and DON'T know. Turn these negative thoughts and actions into positive ones knowing that there are people out there crying for other people whom they don't even know. Stay strong

All of your stories made me cry....it's so real and so upsetting...but makes us stronger...we can never forget and as time passes the more stories you hear makes it that much harder to deal with that this was done to us.

Again thank you for sharing...my heart goes out to everyone involved that day

Re: 6 Years Ago...

Your stories give me the chills, and fill me with hope and anger all at the same time... I was not in NY on 9/11, I was in my apartment in Boston, but my entire family was here, as was DH. I remember waking up that morning and turning on the today show while I got ready (which I do every day), I jumped into the shower and my roomate comes running into the bathroom (She is also from NY, and ironically her husband is now FDNY) and tells me that a plane crashed into the WTC, we watched on TV as if it were a movie, we couldn't believe it. DH was supposed to interview with a company in the WTC that morning and so I was, of course a mess, my dad worked at the time in lower manhattan and I cant tell you how many times I boarded a plane at Logan, it all seemed too much. Then we watched the second plane crash on TV, could not believe our eyes. We sat and cried and shook and tried relentlessly to reach our families at home in NY to no avail. It wasn't until late that evening that I found out that DH had just gotten off teh subway for his interview when the first plane hit, and I couldn't believe how lucky he was. Thankfully I did not lose anyone close to me on that day, but as I walked by the WTC on my way to work this mornign (I now work at the world financial center) I couldn't help but tear up at horror and destruction that happened where I was standing six years ago.
I immediately got in this morning and called my DH and my parents to tell them I love them!

That gave me such goose bumps

I was parking my car at the train station about to go in to take dance class, and I heard on the radio right before I shut my car off that a plane had hit the WTC.. they thought it was a little plane. I was in shock listening to it, I missed the train.

I turned around to drive home.. When I got home I turned on the tv and couldn't believe what I was seeing.. and even worse as I'm sitting there staring at this blazing hole in the tower, the 2nd plane crashes and it's all televised.

I couldn't stop crying watching this, my brother came home from work and we sat together watching this realizing we were being attacked.

I'm thankful that no one close to me was lost, and thankful that it has made America that much stronger. It is a day that no one will forget..

I can't imagine some of the things you ladies went thru on 9/11... It broke my heart to read your stories...

I was on LI that day and I woke up and was getting ready for work watching Good Day NY.. I saw the first tower on fire and just thought that it was on fire.. nothing else..

I then proceeded to drive to work and while listening to the radio, I heard about the Pentagon crash and thought, it was a little too odd..

It wasn't til I got to work that I found out that we were being attacked and I sat in the lunchroom all day just watching TV trying to figure out why this was happening..

When the towers crashed I didn't believe it.. my co-worker said the towers were gone and I was like gone where?? I couldn't and wouldn't believe it..

I went home early that day and spent the rest of the afternoon at my sister's holding my 4 month old nephew saying prayers all night..

I was in college watching a different world on TV. When I just called my mother to say hi. I could tell something was wrong in her voice. She told me to turn on the news someone had just hit the trade center one. When I turned it in the second tower was hit. The next few minutes was pure horror because my father's work involve the airport and this NY City. But I was able to get a hold of him an I knew he was okay. But for so many the outcome was not the same. So Please Please Pray!!!!!!!!

Re: 6 Years Ago...

Thank you for sharing your stories, they have literally have brought me to tears. It's funny since all day I have been trying to block out what today really was... but when I have a minute to really sit down and read this, the tears do not stop.
I was 22, at work in Long Island. We knew nothing for a while... our phones cut out and we really thought that our boss forgot to pay the bill. My boss was online and told us what was happening and I will never forget thinking what was next??? Myself and a few girls went over to the nail salon that was near our office and watched some of the coverage that was happening. We just sat there in shock. My boss eventually let us leave work at about 10:30 and I remember the radio was silent. I couldn't get through to anyone in my family and luckily didn't know anyone in the city at that time. I came home and was consumed to the TV. I remember falling asleep hoping it was all some crazy movie I watched, but realizing that the threats just kept rolling in all night. There were threats on the bridges that made me think if it was over and if I would be waking up there next day. I was completely scared.
Today 6 years later it's still a fresh wound even though no one I knew directly passed on that day. I feel many of what you all feel. The anger, the hope, the confusion, the sadness. I am not sure what strides we have made to take action on those who have done wrong to us. But I do know what actions we have taken as NYers to mend our hearts. I am proud to be from NY and I know that since 9/11 I will never be there same again. God bless all of us and for those who have lost someone be in our hearts forever.

Re: 6 Years Ago...

I was in college, in MD........I was sitting in my graphic design class which was in the mac lab which had a huge screen and someone came running into our classroom and put it up on the screen......I stared for what seem like forever and then BOLTED out the door, I lived off campus so I flew home with a million things going through my head....was my Dad in the city today? Where are my Uncles, they all work in the city? Where is my friends Dad, he's a NYC Fireman?? Tears pouring down my face.....

I ran into our house at the time and sat and stared in HORROR of what was unfolding....& then I saw the first tower collapse and immediately called home but of course couldn't get through for like an hour.....it was actually worse being so far from NY b/c you were CLUELESS and then everything happend in DC so everyone in MD was in a panic to, it was insane. I finally got in touch w/ my family and everyone was ok but my friends father who is a NYC fireman hadn't been heard from, I stayed with her allllllll night and we called her mom about every hour on the hour......It wasn't until 10am the next morning that they heard from him.....he literally couldn't get to a phone ALL NIGHT b/c he was trying to save lives......
