i have had some problems in the past year...having very painful ovarian cyst ruptures. and i felt like my regular gyno wasn't giving me the right attentin---so i decided to go with a new one.
i visited my new gyno--and he really explained things to me better. unfortunately it appears i have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome---which is one of the top causes of infertility in women. the doc was trying to be as positive as possible---and said that obviously this is something that we need to worry about more when the time comes. best case scenario: i ovulate irregularly---and this will make it tricky to conceive (not impossible). and at worst-- i might have a lot of fertility issues and conceiving naturally could very difficult.
DH and i are not going to start TTC until the end of this year--early next year---but this has really made me feel worried about the future. i know i should stay positive---but basically since i had my first period...i've ALWAYS had issues with my period, irregular cycles, bleeding for nearly 2 months straight to not having a period for months....endometriosis runs in my family (mom had a hysterectomy)......and i'm starting to get scared that this will be ANOTHER problem in that area.
part of me is so scared of what the future holds and i know i should be staying positive -- but its hard.
sorry about the long post---i just needed to vent out a little bit.

Re: A little bummed....
wow....one way to look at it is that your new gyno was able to explain to you exactly what the problem is, so at least you know what's going on now, and it's no longer a guessing game. so that's a positive.... stay strong and I hope that things turn out OK for you

Re: A little bummed....
my friend has this as well....she spoke with her gyno actually just recently about this. He spoke very positively to her about it and said they will put her on a specific pill that will still make her periods act regulary but will allow her to conceive naturally. (I don't know exact details of this but maybe ask your gyno about it) He said....yes, there could be difficulties or she could conceive quickly...one never knows BUT that this bridge will be crossed at that time.
It took my aunt 3/4 years to have children....she now has 3 healthy beautiful kids. Stay positive.....things have a way of working themselves out.

hey girl
i'm glad you went to someone else and he was able to explain it to you better. I knew that what you FMed me wasn't the whole story. Now that we know that you have PCOS, this will make things a lot easier for you in terms of getting proper meds and treatment.
Did he put you on any medication?

he told me that with my family history of endometriosis and the painful ruptures i've been having---i need to go back on the pill and that should help ease my painful ruptures. (almost once a month!) if it doesn't start working within 3 cycles---they will look into other treatment options

Good. You definitely HAVE to go back on the pill b/c of the pain and more importantly to prevent other serious complications. Also, when you'reo ready to TTC, you can take clomiphene (Clomid) to induce ovulation.
Now for some more unpleasant news did he run any more test on you? PCOS is associated with several other conditions and you need to be looking out for them and treating them if they arise.

he hasn't run anything else on me yet--but i'm going back in april for my annual and all the tests....he mentioned the Clomid and Metaformin (sp?) -- but that we'd cross that bridge when it came.

Re: A little bummed....
DH is begging me to shut down and go to bed so I'm going to post this for you to read tonight: (btw, you can always FM me if you have any questions)
Women with PCOS are at a higher risk for a number of illnesses, including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer of the uterus (endometrial cancer). Much of this risk can be reversed by exercise and weight loss. Additionally, it is important for women with PCOS to have regular periods. If a woman does not have regular periods, her risk of cancer of the uterus (endometrial cancer) is increased. Medication is generally prescribed to induce regular periods. Obesity is a complication of PCOS. Reducing the medical risks from PCOS–associated obesity requires hard work on the part of the woman with PCOS and is often frustrating.
I've met a few young women with PCOS and most of them were diagnosed with Diabetes. This is one of the most common associated medical conditions and something that definitely needs to monitored.

clomid is for having babies and metformin is for Diabetes. You should def have a blood test for diabetes right now and start taking metformin if you need to. there is no reason to wait until april to get blood work done - it takes 5 min and you can start taking meds right away to avoid complications.

Re: A little bummed....
before I sign off, I'm sorry for your diagnosis and i know that it's a lot to handle right now but I really think you should get tested for Diabetes right away. You've had this condition for a few years right? It's just never been diagnosed. Complications could have been developing for a few years now and you should take care of yourself as best as you can now that you know your diagnosis.
I'm glad you finally have a doctor that is able to explain what is going on .. I just said a prayer for you, and I'm hoping for the best for you both

Re: A little bummed....
I'm sorry Melissa...bad news always stinks! But, although it isn't exactly comforting, at least you know what you are up against, so perhaps your GYN can work with you and DH and help you when you are ready to TTC. Sometimes, it is good to know this far ahead so that you can read up on any literature and maybe get in touch with other women who successfully conceived naturally with this (I am pretty sure my aunt had this and was able to conceive and give birth to my two cousins).
Maybe your insurance will pay for you to get one of those high tech ovulation predictors. But also your doctor is right-don't put the cart before the horse. You never know what is in store for you, but at least it is good to be equipped with the knowledge (and maybe a rabbit or Tulip-just wanted to make you giggle)
