A little bummed....

Original post by MJDoc12

i have had some problems in the past year...having very painful ovarian cyst ruptures. and i felt like my regular gyno wasn't giving me the right attentin---so i decided to go with a new one.

i visited my new gyno--and he really explained things to me better. unfortunately it appears i have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome---which is one of the top causes of infertility in women. the doc was trying to be as positive as possible---and said that obviously this is something that we need to worry about more when the time comes. best case scenario: i ovulate irregularly---and this will make it tricky to conceive (not impossible). and at worst-- i might have a lot of fertility issues and conceiving naturally could very difficult.

DH and i are not going to start TTC until the end of this year--early next year---but this has really made me feel worried about the future. i know i should stay positive---but basically since i had my first period...i've ALWAYS had issues with my period, irregular cycles, bleeding for nearly 2 months straight to not having a period for months....endometriosis runs in my family (mom had a hysterectomy)......and i'm starting to get scared that this will be ANOTHER problem in that area.

part of me is so scared of what the future holds and i know i should be staying positive -- but its hard.

sorry about the long post---i just needed to vent out a little bit.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this Melissa - I hope this new doc is able to get things on track to the greatest extent possible so that you don't run into problems down the road. I'm no doctor so I can't say that everything will be fine, so I'll leave the medical advice to Ev and just say:

Oh, Melissa. I'm sorry you got bad news. But the good part, like others said, is the doctor was able to diagnose your condition and now you can tackle it head on. Plenty of women with PCOS conceive naturally. I've seen some of the ladies on LIF talk about it. Look at it this way...If TTC does end up being a longer process for you than you hope for, then that baby will be an even bigger miracle for you. Aaaand, you'll have lots of fun trying!

Re: A little bummed....

I have PCOS. How did your doctor make the diagnosis? Did you have bloodwork and an internal sonogram done?
Metformin is a diabetes med, but is also used in PCOS. I take it, and am not diabetic, nor am I inuslin resistant. I take it because I have high testosterone levels. Metformin is shown to regulate hormone levels in PCOS patients, and many women start ovulating again after taking it for a few months. If you have a PCOS diagnosis confimed by sono and bloodwork, metformin could be the answer, and you should go on it now, before you start TTC. Many overweight women have PCOS and have found when they lost some weight, that they started ovulating again, so this may be an option for you as well. (please don't take this the wrong way, I don't even know if you are overweight, I just know that it works for many overweight women) When you do want to start TTC, you should se an RE right away, do not start with your Ob/Gyn. I made this mistake and wasted time.
If you have any questions, please feel free to FM me. I don't know if you are LIF, but if you come over to the IF board, there are many women with PCOS there who can answer your questions and share stories.

Good luck to you

Sos orry to hear that you are having issues.
But don't worry about it until you and DH are trying maybe more than 6months. Woman with POAS still are able to concieve naturally. My friends wife has a tipped uterus and she needed IVF with her DD, but now is PG with #2 and it happened naturally. Miracles happen everyday, just stay as positive as possible.

Stay positive Melissa, things will work out for you. The good thing is that you have your wonderful hubby by your side. I went through a medical scare about 2 years ago and I don't know how I would have gotten through if it wasn't for my husband.

We're all praying for you!

Re: A little bummed....

So sorry to hear Melissa look on the positive side though you finally understand why you are in so much pain every month and can take steps to make that better. As for the polycystic ovarian syndrome now that you know about it when it comes time for ttc you will be able to speak to your new and improved doctor about what is best for you. I know it's hard but try not to worry about it now because you will just be upsetting yourself over something that may or may not be a problem. Please don't apologize for venting we are all here to offer support

Melissa, sorry to hear you are dealing with this! Although I don't have PCOS, I know what it's like to hear that you have a medical issue that can cause problems in the future! It's good that you're staying positive! That alone can be a great help! Good luck with everything and you know we're always here to listen!

Stay Positive ~ It is good that you found a new gyno that is explaining the issues and will help you get through anything you are challenged with in the future....
