I've changed my name on just about everything except my car insurance policy and my title/registration.
I was at DMV and I was all ready to do it but I had forgotten the title at home. That might turn out to be a good mistake though! Let me explain...
DH grew up in Brooklyn and never got a license. When we met and he started spending more time out here, going on trips with me, it became a problem that he couldn't drive. So he got his license less than 2 years ago.
If my insurance carrier finds about about him, my premiums are going to go way up I'm sure. Since he's an inexperienced driver and since we don't have a second car to put him on.
My question is this... If you changed your car registration, and/or your name on your car policy, did your insurance co find out about it and force your husband onto your policy?

Re: A question about name change/car insurance
not the same situation - but DH has an antique car, which he has registered at our address. When he added that car - to his own independent (at the time) policy, it automatically added him onto my policies as a driver of record. I suppose the brains at State Farm realized that it's the same address - and he could - at some point - drive my car.

Does he drive your car? If he drives your car, he really should be on the ins policy - g-forbid he gets into an accident - you will have all kinds of trouble. I put DH on my policy before we even got married. My rates didn't go up at all.

Re: A question about name change/car insurance
DH went on my insurance right before we got married because he bought a new car & the insurance was lower in my name! Once I changed my policy to reflect 'married' my insurance went down
Definately get your DH on your policy especially if he is driving your car & if he doesn't have other insurance

Re: A question about name change/car insurance
about 10 years ago i didnt have a car for a few months, but i still had my license. i lived at home and our insurance company was charging my dad b/c i was a licensed driver that was living in the house. when he called and complained- i wasnt even driving any of the cars- they said that every driver has to be insured. i dont know if they still do this, but that is my experience with that.
you really should insure him. maybe you can make him an occasional driver?

Re: A question about name change/car insurance
When I worked for an insurance broker, they would put the most inexperienced (and expensive) driver as the primary operator of the most expensive car. Since we only have one, it would definitely make my insurance go up since he's 1. never had insurance under his name and 2. been driving less than 3 years.
They also could not deny a claim based on the driver not being on your policy. If you lent your car to anyone and they got into an accident, they can't deny the claim. They might cancel you after the fact based on your driving history, claims, and operators. But that could happen anyway.
Next year, we'll be looking for a house or condo and I have a feeling we're going to need 2 cars anyway; one would be a cheapo station car and we would have to put him on the policy. We're just trying to save as much money as possible. If they did find out about him, I wouldn't be so upset because we would have gotten away with it for as long as possible, I just want to hold out for as long as we can.

Re: A question about name change/car insurance
I am insured through my parents still (don't ask, long story) and when DH called to tell them that he was married (b/c they do give you a discount when you get married) they said they had to put me on (same company even) his insurance policy, they also said that it doesn't cost him anymore money having me on.
I hate to say it, but I kind of think he has to be insured. What if (god forbid) he got into an accident?

DH and I have separate car insurance policies. I didn't have to put him on my policy.

Re: A question about name change/car insurance
If you can prove that you have seperate ins policies, you're not required to put each other on the other one's policy.
I'm actually surprised they didn't find him when I bought my new car. Usually they do a search on the address and if someone else's name comes up, they find out who they are. They never did. But if I changed my name, they would definitely be tipped off.
By the way, did you know that if you tell them you use your car only for 'leisure' on weekends, you do not drive to work, that it's cheaper? Never tell them you drive to work. And again, they cannot legally deny a claim if you get in an accident on the way to work.
