Adding to 'sense' of community

Original post by Sonicstef

Lately, Ive been seeing a running theme in the tone of our 'complaint' threads. A lot of it seems to have to do with sense of community we feel on these boards.

I know it used to be very strong. The membership was smaller and we all 'knew' each other. With the membership expanding, I think it gets really difficult to keep track of everyone. And as a result, I personally feel like we may be losing something really great.

In any case, I was hoping we could brainstorm ways to get that warm and fuzzy feeling back - at least on the NW board if no where else.

I think GTGs are one way. We had a really sucessful one last month and hopefully we will have another one by the end of summer.

Anyone else have some positive suggestions on how we can do this?

(Or if Im way off base and Im the only one feeling this...tell me Im crazy and to shut up
)

Thanks Heather. I started to create a whole stink about it, but you know what...it seriously does not even matter and not enough to start drama over. To heck with the meanies! I have bigger and better things to do then deal with that...so long ago and I am soo over it.

I think maybe us on the NW board can all agree to give each other the benefit of the doubt. We are only human...sometimes people say/do something that gets interpreted the wrong way.

Instead of underhanded comments or just holding a grudge...why not email the person privately and out and out ask for clarification.

I think this is a good rule in life but especially on a message board where things are easy to misunderstand and snowball.

We dont all have to love each other...but a little respect goes a long way.

In that same vein, spreading rumors is not very respectful either. I know its hard not to gossip since we are all girls and most of us have that tendency but it can get out of hand and hurt peoples feelings.

And lastly, just because member X likes something that you dont (or vice versa), does not make them your mortal enemy. There are lots of things I like that everyone hates and thats okay. Its what makes this place an interesting place to chat!

Edited to add:

Wendy & DL :I cant believe how low some people are! Do not listen to whoever FM'd you. They obviously have no life to be telling you what you should or shouldnt do. Im sure I speak for most of the members when I say that everyone is welcome..no matter what your age or location. Its just so ignorant for anyone to say otherwise.

Marni - I would love to come to your GTG - you are like one town over from me but I don't have a driver's license yet - when I get one I will be all over LI GTG's but for now I will stick to NYC ones! I am always open to them!

Wendy and DL - I can't believe the rude people that would say such things to you. Age and location should really mean nothing on this board. I even emailed my friend from Colorado (getting married in Colorado) to check out this site. She said it was a great resource. Wendy -you should try a GTG if you are interested - you'd be surprised what you will find in common with someone. We all have homes to decorate, recipes to share and hobbies and other interseted in common besides weddings and babies. We all get together and feel like old friends! I have met some really great girls and some awesome people I can honestly call friends!

I second what Niecey says about the GTG's. I have only been to a couple and it truly feels like you are getting together with old friends!

Re: Adding to 'sense' of community

Wendy and Debbie, I am sincerely sorry that some people have no idea what it takes to be a friend. Age and geographic desirability are NOT factors. I'm glad that you both still feel welcome here.

Marni ~ I would come to your GTG, but I (and I'm admitting one of my deepest, darkest secrets here) am afraid to drive to an unfamiliar place, ESPECIALLY at night.
Aside from that, that is also the day my wood floors are being layed, so Arnold and I are having a slumber party at my friends house.
If you do a GTG in the future I'd love to come, if someone volunteers to chauffer me around.

Here Here Stef, I agree with everything you just posted.

I would like to make a fresh start! Ignore those old feelings/grudges and make new friendships. Who's with me?

Re: Adding to 'sense' of community

Okay here goes.

I have been a long time member - probably lurking more so than posting at first. I used to follow everyone's plans too and felt I made a connection with a few ladies. I won't name them all, but Marni, Erica (Yabbobay) and a few others were a few of the ladies I remember getting to know in the planning stages of my wedding (and besides a few of the golden oldies, I feel as though my wedding was ages ago, but it really wasn't).

Then I left my city job and got a job on LI. With this new job came work (go figure) and my ability to browse the internet dimished to nothing. I quickly felt like I lost track of a lot, missed out on a few friendships, and moved to other stages in my life (house, TTC, etc.).

However, I tried my best to keep up, posting when I could at home. I missed the GTG at Papa Joe's because it was my hubby's birthday. I attended a small GTG at Okey Dokey's last month and enjoyed the company very much. I am a very shy person, and until I get to know someone well, my shyness and nervousness tend to make me seem aloof. That's just how I am.

Anyways, I am hoping to stay away from all the negativity that crops up, and apoplogize in advance if I missed anyones posts... Sometimes, all I have is 10 minutes on the computer at home, and I can barely read the fist page, no less post.

I hope to continue to read (and post when I can, LOL) and would love to get to more GTG's.

Marni - thanks for your invite. I did reply on the original thread that it is the weekend of my birthday (the 17th is my big day), so we will be making plans to do soemthing that Friday night (maybe heading to your old stomping grounds, LB). But I still would love to meet you at one of the GTG's soon!!

Wendy - I know you live up near me. Next GTG, we should meet up and go. It would be fun to go with someone.

Okay, I'm done... Love ya all - those I've met and those I will soon

Re: Adding to 'sense' of community

I do not feel the sense of community b/c I was not invited to the pool

I will make friends with anyone as long as you share peekshures, older women, far away women, women who are having children, women who are TTC, women who already have children, I take em all.

Re: Adding to 'sense' of community

Edited for those LDladies

PS you cannot stay in your shell, not attend any of the GTG, or not participate on the board and get to know people or feel apart of this community, no matter how nice the ladies on here are, it is a 2 way street.

Re: Adding to 'sense' of community

No deb, when I re-read it I guess I should change that, its either or, or both, you participate so that makes up for you not attending. Sweetie we understand, but I will be at your shower in FL no doubt

I am just playing Shamma. I got nothing but love for everyone today! I like this thread. For some reason it has helped me feel like I can talk to everyone now.
