So, I was at lunch today and a coworker commented on my age and when I am gonna get preggo. I am turning 31 and I have only been married not even a year. He said after 35 there is a 50% chance of birth defects. I was like well then ill be fine with just having my pets. He is my friend but, I mean seriously that is just rude.

Its funny we are talking about this. Just last night DH gpa (who is visiting us from AZ) asked when we were having kids and that he wants a grandkid soon. Ewwww I found that so rude! I guess my grandparents said it too but we dont want kids yet!

My mom had me when she was 34 and I'm normal and happy.
Same here. My mom was 35 when she had me and 41 when she had my sister. My cousin had kids late too.

people make rude comments all the time.....maybe you can just give him the benefit of the doubt, he may not have realized that what he was saying was rude - or it may not have come out right....
my aunt says the same thing to me even though i am younger....dont wait, dont wait....be finished with all your kids before 35 - and although its annoying i know that she is only saying it b/c she waited until her 30s to get married and to have kids and one of my cousins ended up being very sick and she passed away....so my aunt is just saying that to look out for me, its just her comments dont always come out in a nice way - more like in a rude, bossy way - but the intention is good - if that makes sense....
but in any event, do what is right for you, i believe that what will be will be.....and so many moms are in their 30s and even 40s these days and have perfectly healthy babies!

Tell him to shut his pie hole. For him to say that birth defects are common after 35 is astounding. Look at all these women having babies at 35+! My Mom had me at 38- no problems here. Boss's wife had his son at 40- no problems there either....

I'm surprised this is the first you heard of this nonsense!! I get it all of the time but then again I'm 34. I admit I worry about it but, I know that I'm doing the right thing by waiting. Don't let it get to you. He won't be the last to say something rude like that.

Thats just rude. It's like ask commenting on someone's weight IMO.
My mom had my brother at 40 and he is norman (a PITA, yes, but I suppose that's normal at 13 yrs old haha)
I hope to have 2 kids by the time I'm 35, but I doubt it will be possible since I'm 31 and we arent going to try for at least another year. I'm just counting on me following my mom's genes when it comes to pregnancy.
