Allegra

Sorry to bother you with another puppy question, but you seem so knowledgeable. So she was pad trained at the breeders but here she goes on the rug under my table in the den or under my IKEA chairs, like she is hiding.

Yet she was at my parents last night and she went on the pad, no problem. I praised her of course, but here she went on the rug again. I can't get her to go on the pad.

I know it takes time to train her and I am not expecting overnight results, but I can't figure out why she wont' do it here, but will do it there. Any advice?

Michelle,

The thing is, you can't just leave her out in the living room. You have to keep her penned in kitchen with a weewee pad or in another penned are with the weewee pad. If you just leave her out she's going to just pee wherever and whenever she wants. The first week is a lot of structure, just til she learns the pad.

Re: Allegra

I have her in an exercise pen but she can almost climb out if already and she HOWLS when she is in it. Especially if I am in the den which I usually am. I don't want her to hate it because I want her to think of it as her safe space, this way I can take it to NJ or my parents or wherever she goes and its her spot.

So then I put her in the kitchen but since I am not in it she jumped at the gate until she knocked it down. And it was wedged in there tight.

Did I mention they are super smart???

Everything was always so easy at my parents when we got puppies, but our den and kitchen were attached and all tile floor.

Is there any way to keep the exercise pen in the same room as you? Is it big enough for you to get in there and hang out with her?

I agree with Allegra that you have to keep her in a small space and in the same space. The first few weeks of paper training are tough and the first few weeks of outdoor training are tough too.

You just have to keep putting her on the paper everytime you think she is going to do something. If she does not go on the paper then you have to punish her...bring her very close the accident spot and punish her then you have to put her in her crate.

Are you crate training her too? Like do you put her in a crate at night and when you are not home? If not then it is a good idea to do so. You are not supposed to put a training pad in the crate and never put water or food in the crate. Only toys and maybe a blanket but that is only if she is getting the hang of going to the potty on the paper.

My parents crate trained their dog (and her predecessor). At first the dogs cried when being put in the crate, but they did come to look at the crate as their den. Don't put her in the crate or exercise pen as punishment, but when she' s in there, don't take her out just because she's crying.

Also, get a carpet cleaner for pet stains to clean where she has gone under the table. They have special enzymes that will kill the smell of the dog's urine. Animals will tend to keep marking their spot. She may be able to pick up the smell there, even if you can't.

Also, keep track of how much she has had to eat or drink and try to get her outside before she goes.

The exercise pen... It is in the den where I usually am, but she has almost figured out how to climb over it. Papillons are super super smart which makes it hard. I don't want her to get hurt. I can't get in it with her.

I don't want to punish her in her crate because I was told thats when they don't like it. I do yell at her when she goes and if I see her do it I grab her and I put her right on the pad. I think the problem is she won't go if someone is looking at her so she goes and hides. Its a weird but common trait of a papillon, so I just put a box over part of the pad in the exercise pen to see if that will work.

I am crate training her... at night she is fine, but I put the crate by my night table so she can see me. She sleeps through the night. But in the day she carries on like you thought I was killing her. Not crying, SCREAMING!!! She gets herself so worked up that she pukes, almost every time. Even in the pen when she is locked in she starts shaking. She can not be alone.

The biggest problem is she only goes 3 times a day tops. She drinks water but she just doesn't pee. And its not that she is doing it when I am not looking, I check her bottom constantly. She isn't going. Everything I have read and learned about training requires praise for going and establishing a schedule, but she almost never goes, so thats so hard. Even with the crate, I head you take her out and if she goes she can come out. If not you put her back in until she goes. But we do that for 2 1/2 hours. She doesn't go. I thought puppies pee all the time.

The vet said its ok, there is nothing wrong with her, but how do you train a dog who doesn't pee often?

By the way, other then the not being able to be alone thing and the peeing, which she has only been here 3 days, she is excellent. She loves people and doesn't get into things. I am really not complaining about her. Just trying to figure out what to do.

And I know it takes time to train her. I am only concerned because she was pad trained at the breeders.

She never goes, I have never seen a dog hold it like her. There is no real schedule to when she goes. Its crazy.

Re: Allegra

you have to let her cry/scream.....she is going to have separation anxiety if she is always near you and then you have to go off to work or are out all day at some point. They will cry but just like a baby sometime you have to let them do it.
