Am I the Only One Can't Keep Food in my House

Original post by dgtlsunshine

Is it just me. We have been married and living together going on 6 months. I never realized how much my husband eats. Really its like I can't keep enough food in the house. Also about how much do you all spend on groceries a month?

I am not a newlywed but I do live with my FI and find this thread the funniest! LMAO

To add my 2cents, my FI is the same way!! He HATES the grocery store, which leaves me to do most - no sorry - ALL of the grocery shopping. We try to be good to save $$ for the wedding and make lunches during the week but most of the time we forget - we've been a lot better lately. I couldn't even tell you how much a month I spend, but each trip is anywhere from $50-100 depending on what our needs are....

Verdila - you are not alone. My DH loves to go food shopping. If he shops, it costs between $150 and $200. If I go, then it costs about $100. He buys junk or stuff we already have or things he wants to 'try'. We 'try' everything new. I swear he's the marketing people's dream.

We end up spending between $300 and $500 on food every month.

I don't cook that much during the week either because we have such unpredictable schedules. Unfortunately, he will never start dinner before I'm home. Mind you he can cook but won't.

Our house is usually out milk and bread and cheese and egg, do you think they would add it to the list. I threaten that I will not pick up anything if its not on the list. We do mostly BJ's and Costco, now I know how my mom felt when I used to go to the supermarket with her and complain that she is not picking up the good stuff. Food is darn expensive

BJs & Costco vs. Supermarkets

Well we just got married in may and its just the two of us. We spend between $60-65 a week. Food is freaking expensive. Anyway, we are considering when we get in our new home, going to Costco for most of our groceries. Do you really find a savings there of meats or is it just a place to buy in 'bulk'. I have heard differnent opinions from family/friends, so I am curious about your experiences. thanks

We do costco but I don't buy as much there as I used to. We can't keep up toa point where it is a savins. Actually we take a loss sometimes. The packages are just too big and a lot of things spoil. I think if you have kids its better. But two people can only eat but so many muffins before they spoil.

With Costco and Bj's you can't get everything there for a small family, we get cereal, lotion, detergent, pills, toothpaste etc, but we do not get milk and that sort of stuff. the prices are good. Just don't get things which you are not going to eat pretty soon.

Neva you are funny

I fell into the BJ/Costco trap a few years ago - some things sound like they are such a great deal when it really isnt if it spoils or you get sick of it before you could possibly eat it. I think they are good for personal items like shampoo, razors, etc. but you have to know the prices from the store.

Re: BJs & Costco vs. Supermarkets

Denise, my parents (with then 3 kids at home) tried BJ's. It didn't work for them/us, because the packaging is really huge, and by the time you save, you've bought enough food for a month or two and now you have to find storage space for it.

I think its good if you have a lot of guests all the time, which wasn't our case. For a normal 5 person family it was too much.

Thanks girls. I think I will get a card and just use it for entertaining purposes! :) We are always having people over.

I do BJ's and Sams for the non-perishables. BJ's accepts coupons, so I would cut out $1.00 off coupon when available for paper products and detergent.

Its funny that this thread came up...
My challenge in life is getting a good deal ! Hey I worked in a buying office for Century 21 dept stores, I was TRAINED to negotiate, get the BEST deal possible, and not settle for less, OH, and NEVER EVER pay retail....

So, since i've been home with the baby, and not working, I've had more time to look through the Sunday paper. My mom got us into habits of 'when its on sale, STOCK UP !' So thats my motto for alot of things that are non-perishable. I will ALWAYS have a HUGE supply of pasta, toilet paper, Bounty, cereal, tomato sauce, garbage bags, cake mix, and the list goes on... and then with these double coupons everywhere, i get even better deals..(natural high !!!!)

Just this week, I broke my record, when I see the Waldbaums paper with TRIPLE COUPONS, i went through my little pile. I did 2 shoppings and saved about $65 in double and triple coupons. and I didnt buy anything I wouldnt need. Diapers, toothpaste, tissues, food of course. and the prices I paid for some things after a triple coupon, I had a laugh at

Ok, so i have nothing else to do ! But its such a thrill for me !!

The only things I buy weekly are milk, eggs, bread, and meats. So its really hard to judge how much I spend per month....depends on the deals.

**Edited to add, that, we belong to BJ's and we might join Costco in March when Bj's membership expires, but I really never got a deal at any of these stores that I would consider a DEAL !

DH's cousin, who is an attorney, adjunct Law Professor and he's in the Military, anyway, he's pretty comfy as far as finances, and he and I share this THRILL for deals, we were comparing stories once, LOLL. His wife and DH just laughed at us....Now I dont feel so bad !!

You are me! Thanks for the honesty! You have no idea how excited I get when I get a roll of paper towels free! My DH laughs at me all the time, too. But my thriftiness and love for bargains is the reason we are now able to afford a house. I have always looked for a deal, sale, whatever you want to call it! :) I am glad I am not the only one who does this too!

Re: Anna

Denise, I have gotten $35 pants or tops, at Macy's at the end of the season, on clearance, plus a coupon, for like $5. I walk out of the store like i'm walking on air, LOLLLLLLL.
Oh, I have good DEAL stories..dont get me started !
You'd be sick if you saw how much of a markup these stores are making when they charge their ridiculous prices...
NEVER PAY RETAIL, ladies !

DEnise, me too, my thriftness, and saving, have helped me save a nice amount of money over the years, that I would have NEVER expected to have saved by age 24. (im now 28)...

Re: Anna

I am 28 too and its funny but I have seen the biggest increase in my savings since I was 24 as well! :) I guess came with pay raises, etc.!

I have stories too and you don't want to get me started. Hey maybe LIWEDDINGS can add a new section called Bargain's Hunters or something like that where we can share/post/advise on great sales going on or deals we got! :)

What do you think LIW?

Re: Anna

anna, I was at Waldbaums this past Sunday with my triple coupons!! I save tons...I'm a bargain shopper myself but my grocery bill is still $80/90 a week.

But, we eat all 3 meals in and only get pizza on Friday nights - so I guess it's not so bad.

I'm on a budget so I'm constantly going through the Sunday paper!

For those of you who got to meet Matt you know how tall and thin he is. Well let me tell you he eats like there is no tomorrow!!! It is ridiculous!

Re: Anna

Denise, good idea about the Bargains section on LIW, LOL...

I love paying like 75cents for something thats originally $5, on sale for $3 and here I come with a 75cent coupon thats tripled to $2.25 off ! HAHH.
some coupons i use just because I CAN, HAH. and i try something new for a fraction of the price

we can have an online coupon swap !
of course we'd have to mail em to eachother.

Re: Anna

Oh thats a good idea. Like the book club someone was starting, we can start a coupon club! :)
