Animal Lovers

I'm sure there are many people not into animals on here so this isn't against any of you guys..but does anyone find it odd when people say they hate animals. I think hate is a very strong word. Or the people with OCD'S, who for instance hate dogs, cats, puppies, you name it, because they claim they are dirty. I know someone who says this. I think most people would agree that most kids love puppies or kittens, so then where does all this 'I hate animals' come from

I wonder this, too! How could you hate something that never has done anything against you. Or maybe that's it- maybe they had a bad experience or associate that animal with a bad experience for whatever reason. But just for no reason, I don't get it.

And I'm sorry, but to be honest, I do not like people who don't like my dogs. I know there's a few of them who I'm friendly with but I always watch the way they treat them when they come over and I strongly dislike it. But if someone comes over and pays attention to my dogs and treats them nicely, I'm your friend for life! And on the flip side, I don't trust people who my dogs don't like! There HAS to be a reason and they usually have pretty good instincts!

I wasnt an animal person......So i have probably said I hate animals in the past. I think most people probably say it not meaning they HATE animals more like they really don't like to be around them.

It took me getting my own dog to even like them. And I am still very leery of other people animals.

This bothers the hell out of me! I don't understand how people can dislike animals. I will NEVER allow my children to be scared of animals.

It makes me so angry when I am walking with my dog (a golden) and kids (not little ones either, like 7 and 8 yrs) get so scared and they run away squealing. I understand if a child was bit by a dog (I was bit by a Lab when I was 10) but the parents should really try to ease their fears. But then again most fears are learned behaviors so they are probably learning this from their parents.

Sorry...vent over. And to anyone that does have a fear of animals I am sorry if I offended you.

Ugh~ I have a co-worker who “hates” dogs and the way she talks about them is sickening. And she’s a real “tool” that if she hears a sad story about a dog- she HAS to tell me and of course it ruins my whole day.
But, if there’s a genuine dislike or fear for animals, I can understand that.

When my first dog passed away I was about 16. My sister was 8 and my brother 7. We all went together and got another dog a few months later, adopted her from North Shore. She was a puppy then and the idiots at North Shore went on and on telling us how great of a family dog she will be! Turns out, she was a Chow/German Shephard mix. Chows are notoriously one person dogs and they are also easy to spot as they have purple tongues! We didn't know this, but I feel like North Shore should've! Well she loved me, my mom, and my dad but she didn't like the kids- she was dominant towards them. Eventually, she wound up biting them both on the face, in the same spot right under their eyes. An inch in the wrong direction and they'd each have lost an eye. For that, these kids should be terrified of dogs in general or at the very least, the dog that bit them. They still loved her and cried when we had to give her up (To a no-kill rescue for aggressive dogs that trains them and adopts them into proper homes). My parents and I are always much more cautious when adopting dogs now and we are lucky to have some of the sweetest dogs around. My mom has two collies and a pomeranian who recently passed away and the kids love them all! If those two kids don't hate dogs, nobody should!

Exactly my point! Bravo to you, your parents and your siblings for living through that tramatic experience and still loving animals.

My DH had a very similar experience as your siblings and he loves animals!!!

Re: Animal Lovers

im glad you bring this up...ive always had a weird reaction too, to people who say they hate animals, and of course me being a cat lover have an especially hard time with that.

i do understand being not comfortable with animals as im still not that comfortable with other cats that i dont know or dogs in general. im not the type to pet any animal and certainly not the type to like a dog near my face but i would never ever say i hate animals or anything remotely like that. until you have a pet, its a very difference experience.

i know that when i was very very little like under 2, there was these large dogs, maybe pits that would bark loudly every time we walked past the house (with my parents of coursE) and almost got over the fence once. that scared me for a long time and might contribute to my still somewhat fear or shyness around animals that could potentially bite.

but in any case, this is a very good point and always makes me sad to hear a person say they 'hate' animals...expecially if they have no good reason.

eta: i have to say though with kids who are afraid...kids are generally afraid of most new things if they havent been exposed especially when its something that might be larger than they are. i agree that parents should try to make their children more comfortable with animals but if they dont already have one, its understandable that one would be afraid if you're a child.

ITA. Though I live in a neighborhood where everyone is terrified of dogs and they instill that fear in their kids. They literally run across the street when they see a dog coming. Of course, I don't think a parent should teach a kid to be completely unafraid of animals either, especially dogs they don't know. They should still be cautious, but not afraid.

I'm a fool, it's only by the grace of God that I've never been bitten. I go up to every dog I see and give him a pet! In fact, I was almost bitten by my neighbor's dog when I was trying to help him because he was having a seizure. Well he came outta the seizure and tried to bite my face off. But I think he was just scared because he was hurting.

Re: Animal Lovers

I don't understand this myself. What I think is that it could stem from their parents growing up and they turn out that way. I was bit by a chow chow when I was in the 6th grade. I have scars on the side of my wrist and if he would have bit once more theres a good chance that he could have tore it off. I still love animals and never hesitate to go up to a dog or any animal. Maybe some people just haven't had the chance to experience the love an animal can give.

DH and I get some slack from people because we have a parrot. She has the biggest personality and gives so much love and she talks non stop. I think some people willl just never understand but as for people who say they hate animals I am a little leary of them.
