Annoyed at people who simply don't care and need to share it
I had DH's coworkers over last night and they were hanging out in the kitchen and heard that I put on the news. They were interested and walked in and noticed it was BBC America News. I watch this as often as I can on the BBC channel we got due to our dish service. Now I love these people but I was kinda sick when two of the people in the group made some remarks.
WELL - they had a huge story about the economy and what is going on with wall street and var. global markets and what it could mean once the financial meltdown starts to trickle down to everyone else and these people were like who the hell cares!!!! WHAT????? I looked at them in shock - who cares? You will when you don't have a job or the dollar really starts to sink in value - who cares? They are talking about DEPRESSION!!!! Typically no one uses that word very lightly and it was said at least every third sentence that it could not just us but a global depression since many financial institutions are backed by global investors. They still said Oh it's just the rich people who work in finance's problem, um no.
I would like to know your feelings. I don't understand everything - trust me I am not super intelligent but this to me is something that is important.

It's not that I don't care, its that I don't know whats going to happen, and worrying about it won't change anything. I'm not changing my everyday life, I always saved my money regardless, so only time will tell.
But if we do end up in a depression, I can say that your friends are wrong that it will only hurt 'rich people who work in finance's problem'. A depression is nationwide, and will ultimately hurt us all financially.

It is definitely important - you are right. But some people just DON'T care and you just have to let it be their problem. Am I going to get all of my money out of the banks and hide under my bed with it until I get an 'all clear'?? Nope. But I will pay more attention to what is going on around me
The economy is cyclical and you have to take everything the media tells you with a grain of salt. I work for the government so my job is stable. Gas prices dont even really affect me bc I live so close to work. I don't have any money invested in anything risky so I am safe there too.
DH is a small business owner so of course he worries more, but the business has been there for over 40 years and they had a pretty decent summer so we are not too worried about that either.
We will still live our lives the same, start looking for houses, go on vacation - we are just more cautious and aware now.

To some people 'not caring' may be a way to avoid or face the reality of the problem. And a financial crisis will affect us all. If the 'rich people' suffer and those are the ones which one the businesses where we work in we wont have jobs. It is a domino effect.

Re: Annoyed at people who simply don't care and need to share it
Well that is it - a domino effect. Once one sector starts cutting jobs it usually starts to get everyone into a panic and then other companies soon follow. I don't expect us to start grabbing money out of the banks because most people have the sense not to have over the guaranteed amount in one single account but what I do worry is higher prices for items, cut jobs, communities will start to slide due to businesses closing down, etc.
I think there is simply nothing the average person can do at all but work, save and live. But I think it is scary that BBC, China News ( my landlords are chinese so we have those stations), Italia News seem to say the same thing that our gov't as of right now has no clue what to do with the economy and is confused about how to proceed to fix it and will probably wait until the election to make any major changes. With this it will affect all global markets. How this effects the majority of us I HAVE NO CLUE but just doesn't sound good.

I do care, but I haven't made any changes in my life right now. DH and I are still booking vacations and doing what we normally do. Of course we need to save more for in case of emergency, but right now we are living our lives and not doing anything differently.

I voted no because I've been paying attention since long before Tuesday. I'm self employed, and have been for 10 years. Dad's been SE for 30. Business is down about 75% for him, and more for me. Other people in the same industry have just disappeared. It hits non-bankers first, and longer, because we've been employing 'trickle-down' theory for a long time now, and money doesn't trickle down as far anymore.

Re: Annoyed at people who simply don't care and need to share it
I think that they see it as JUST rich financial people being in trouble. They don't realize that NOT everybody working at these places are rich. They also dont realize how it effects everybody else in the long run and the average american is being effected by all this. I think maybe its easier for them to think this way so they don't worry. Its kind of a shield for them.
I feel horrible for 95% of the people in financial business who are effected. THe VERY rich A**hole who always thought he was better than everybody else and looked down on others, and the ones who do shady business and will take stupid risks just to make a buck and get themselves in this trouble, i dont feel bad for sorry. Some of them are such a**holes, and i dont feel bad that now they dont have 5 homes, or cant have 3 cars and all these things. I wont cry over that. So i think they are JUST focusing on these people.
I am VERY scared about this. Ive had the worst summer trying to find a job. Summers are always bad to find one but this year was even harder. My recruiter said after labor day it always gets better and was telling me how she was already getting things in. For the past few weeks ive been covering for my friend at work, she took time off before her wedding and then HM. SO i thought it'd be perfect bc after i was done there would be jobs available luckily dh's job is actually VERY busy and they have too much going on. But im scared what will happen with the country period. The funny part is that she was telling me about a job at merrill not long ago. DOnt think this is happening

i'm very scared -- we havent changed our behavior much right now because it hasn't really affected us persay, but I think we should make more of an effort to save even more.
also scares me because while DH is an engineer, if we move to NY it means he needs to find a new job and i dont know how hard that will be.
It's definitely affecting law -- a lot of firms no-offered a chunk of their summer associate class this year due to the economy which never happens, and a bunch of my classmates are scrambling for jobs now.
my sis is a senior in college and worked at Goldman Sachs this summer and this is really going to hurt her.
i'm scared

Re: Annoyed at people who simply don't care and need to share it
i just saw alot of ppl voted NO but i think theres other things that concern them that have to do with the economy. Such as high gas prices, even food has gone up, i think these are concerns most people have. Real estate market being down, if anyone is trying to sell a place then it can be bad for them. Even buying isn't the greatest now, yes prices are down but the process of getting a mortgage is H E L L right now. When i did it a few years ago it was so smooth and easier, now i want to rip my hair out.
Also, i dont think people realize how bad it is if the financial industry keeps doing bad. I mean when we had the great depression it was bc the stock market crashed, so YES it can effect everybody.
ETA: not to mention our taxes will probably go up to help fix the situation.

Re: Annoyed at people who simply don't care and need to share it
The problem with the financial crisis is affecting more people then some would like to admit. When it comes to job security right know people thast work in the finance world can not be on anything. I feel really bad for the recent grads/ people looking for work. As if the job situations werent horrible right now to begin with, now they will have to compete with people that lost their jobs from these huge companies with over 10 years experience- willing to take an entry level job to put food on the table.
I know so many people that are bartending, doing retail jobs after college because the job situation is so hard and degree or not they need to get the bills paid. Others are staying in school and doing the masters straight hoping that by the time they are finished the employment opportunities will be much better.

I agree on all of the above since I'm also in the legal field. So many of my friends are frantically trying to get jobs. This is especially true in NY where the market was over-saturated w/lawyers to begin with.
A good friend is a corporate lawyer at a huge firm and she basically explained to me that her and a few others were told they were basically guaranteed to make partner as of last year...now she is up for partner literally next month and her future is totally uncertain b/c of how many deals of stalled due to the state of the market.
It's frightening.

i think alot of ppl feel that since they're not in the financial industry it doesnt effect them so its normal. BUT you are going to get taxed to help the economy out now, and after the govt bailing out AIG its your tax money that will help all this out, so EVERY New yorker will be effected when it comes to this bc we have to pay for these mistakes. So it does effect everybody actually. Plus when the economy is doing so badly, which as you've already noticed prices have gone up. BUT most importantly GOD forbid the stock market crashes, this wont effect just financial ppl it will effect EVERYBODY. Remember the great depression happened bc of a stock market crash and it wasnt just those in the financial world that were effected. I think this should be the biggest worry for ppl and although you have no ties to financial industry, if all these companies go down then all of NYC will be screwed basically. Unfortunately the financial industry means its OUR economy and anything that happens can hurt us greatly, no matter what industry you are in.
MANY ppl i know who dont have jobs anymore are looking elsewhere in other industries for a job. I have been too, and guess what its still bad. I have been very flexible with this, but now im competing against tens of thousands of ppl out of work who also are willing to take on other jobs.

well if you are looking to move elsewhere then one problem with the economy being the way that it is now, banks wont give out loans easily and its going to make home buying alot harder.
I think its good to have a positive attitude dont get me wrong. If you are doing fine now then no need to start stressing, if something happens then you'll worry. I cant live in this bubble unfortunately bc i have been looking for a job, working with 3 recruiters not just one. Summer was horrible and nothing was coming in, its been very difficult. It was supposed to get better after labor day and then this happened, i was even told about a job at merrill lol thats not happening now. It s*cks bc i know others who are willing to do other things and take other jobs and thats the problem, now youre competing with so many.
Also effected bc i am CURRENTLY in the process of selling my place and moving. It took over 7 months, which would've never taken this long if it wasnt for the economy being the way it is. Now theres all new procedures when it comes to getting a place or selling it. Banks dont want to just give a loan and now its going to get even harder bc of what happened.
and some of us dont live in NY just bc we have a mentality that we 'HAVE' to live in ny. Its hard for me bc my parents separate a few years ago. My mom lives alone, and even now dh and i found out that bc of his job it will be best to move to LI and i am having an extremely hard time with this. Nothing against LI, but it breaks my heart to think of my mom living all alone and me being so far away. She doesn't drive so it wont be a situation where i come see her and she comes see me, its only gonna be one way. I cant just stop by casually, or stop by for a little bit and then go home the way i would here. It might be wrong but at the same time it would break my heart to be so far away from her while she is alone.
so unfortunately the real estate market has effected me bc ive been going through the process of all this for a long time.
The fact that i cant find a job again effects me, and it just got harder.
and this is not to cause drama at all so dont take it that way. Your positive attitude is a great thing.

i honestly didnt think i coudl either.. it took a few years to adjust.. i was in the fast pace, high risk , LI/NYC mentality for years .. went right into workforce after HS worked my way up quickly in a manufacturing firm, made it to right under vp before 25 years old... worked hard, worked long hours then came to the realiziation i did... i used to worry myself until i was sick and very tired.. but realized it wan'st worth my time, effort, or health due to aniexty of everything.. happiness is truly just talkign to loved ones.. even if you dont live near them you can appreciate them.. hell i even appreciated them more when i left... dont get me wrong.. i still buy fancy toys, i still own a house, i still haev a brand new car.. still do vacas... only i get less... 2 vacas a year one economy one living it up... live near AC/Philly so those are alwyas bonus 'vacations' , not the 'ideal' car (my tatse is kinda up there) but its nice, new and loaded... but im also not worried about many things anymore.. and just enjoy time with my DH, my cats and friends/family when in get to see them
after these long winded posts of mine.... id say to summarize ' i truly dont care about the economy, the countrys state etc, but i care about mine and familys well being and stuff like that a ton more.. b/c i have control over it'

i honestly didnt think i coudl either.. it took a few years to adjust.. i was in the fast pace, high risk , LI/NYC mentality for years .. went right into workforce after HS worked my way up quickly in a manufacturing firm, made it to right under vp before 25 years old... worked hard, worked long hours then came to the realiziation i did... i used to worry myself until i was sick and very tired.. but realized it wan'st worth my time, effort, or health due to aniexty of everything.. happiness is truly just talkign to loved ones.. even if you dont live near them you can appreciate them.. hell i even appreciated them more when i left... dont get me wrong.. i still buy fancy toys, i still own a house, i still haev a brand new car.. still do vacas... only i get less... 2 vacas a year one economy one living it up... live near AC/Philly so those are alwyas bonus 'vacations' , not the 'ideal' car (my tatse is kinda up there) but its nice, new and loaded... but im also not worried about many things anymore.. and just enjoy time with my DH, my cats and friends/family when in get to see them
after these long winded posts of mine.... id say to summarize ' i truly dont care about the economy, the countrys state etc, but i care about mine and familys well being and stuff like that a ton more.. b/c i have control over it'
your last line basically says it all. I think some of us worry bc it is effecting us greatly and for others its not so until that day comes they'd rather not think about it. Those of us who are concerned though its because unfortunately it has effected our own lives and just like you said, since i care about myself, Dh and families well being this concerns me since it has had effects on us.
Its funny bc reading your post i realized how for me it was always the opposite. I didnt worry, i used to never stress. People always asked me how i handled problems bc i never seem effected by bad things that happen to me. I was also so laid back and relaxed. BUT now since these things have personally happened to me, the way i normally would react is different. It has alot to do with me going from only having to worry about myself and knowing ill get through it, to now seeing how my life directly effects somebody else. I think this is why i am more stressed now that i am married and something bad happens. If i was single i know i wouldn't be stressed about this.
