Annoyed at people who simply don't care and need to share it

Original post by nifheim

I had DH's coworkers over last night and they were hanging out in the kitchen and heard that I put on the news. They were interested and walked in and noticed it was BBC America News. I watch this as often as I can on the BBC channel we got due to our dish service. Now I love these people but I was kinda sick when two of the people in the group made some remarks.

WELL - they had a huge story about the economy and what is going on with wall street and var. global markets and what it could mean once the financial meltdown starts to trickle down to everyone else and these people were like who the hell cares!!!! WHAT????? I looked at them in shock - who cares? You will when you don't have a job or the dollar really starts to sink in value - who cares? They are talking about DEPRESSION!!!! Typically no one uses that word very lightly and it was said at least every third sentence that it could not just us but a global depression since many financial institutions are backed by global investors. They still said Oh it's just the rich people who work in finance's problem, um no.

I would like to know your feelings. I don't understand everything - trust me I am not super intelligent but this to me is something that is important.

People dont care until it's directly affecting them

The economy is bad. People are losing their jobs and homes. I dont know how anyone can't care. It's not just affecting rich people on wall street.

it is sad, and its great if people don't know anyone effected. Its hard to believe but i guess there are some who aren't. Dh and I were talking and he was saying how im out of work and hes not, one of his friends works in real estate and hes working and his wife is not whom also was in real estate and her company went bankrupt. Another friend of dh's works in mortgages and hes not working but his wife who is a teacher is. Another friend owned his own small mortgage business, and hasnt had a closing in MONTHS so basically hasnt worked for months. Then another friend same thing hes not working but his wife is. Its so crazy bc a year ago we all had jobs and now its just horrible. And like you said, its not just rich ppl and its not evenjust those in the financial industry. My mom works in a completely opposite industry, she works in the beauty industry and she is feeling it too. She works in the city and MANY of her clients are those who have been effected by everything that has happened so business is slower. Retailers are feeling it too bc ppl are spending less money.

One way or another, i feel like most of us have at least one person in our lives who unfortunately are feeling all of the effects if not themselves going through it.

I never used to pay attention to things like this. This time if actually really affected me directly though. I lost my job two weeks before the wedding. I was working for an attorney and I handled bank closings. We represented the lenders before/during/after closings. I watched tons of people lose their jobs, banks shut down, and then it ended up that we had to shut down our department.

Once that happened, I realized how bad the economy was. It just opened my eyes. I've been following everything now and it actually is very scary. 'Depression' is not a word the government uses lightly.

Banks that have been around for YEARS and seemed like they'd be around forever, are gone. Wamu, Merril Lynch...these are large established institutions. It's not like when the dot-coms tanked..this is a much mosre serious issue.

Yes, the economy is cyclical, but it takes a lot more to bounce back from something like this than it does to tank like it did. It's easier for the economy to fall apart than it is to build it back up.

I've been in this industry for about 7 years and I've never seen it so bad. It was slow at times, but this BAD. I either have to wait it out (at least a year) or find a whole new profession.

I do notice that a lot of people don't take it seriously and that worries me. Who knows what will happen in the coming months. It could get better, but it could get much much worse.

well if god forbid there is a depression then people will worry bc that will effect EVERY single person, no matter what industry you are in, no matter where you live it wont matter.

Its scary bc if you look at how the great depression happened, its so similar to whats going on now. Big banks start closing, high unemployment rate, alot of similar patterns but lets pray. The difference this time is that i hope the fed will be more cautious this time. They will be more careful about what to do and also about helping out companies, the way AIG was saved, bc they will remember what happened in 1929 and how they didnt help the big banks that closed. You had ppl who panicked and weren't investing and closing their bank accounts and companies weren't giving loans. This is the only reason i dont understand why ppl dont think it effects them, bc if god forbid this continues then everyone no matter where you work will be in trouble. This causes a domino effect and many other industries get effected by all this. Although, if ppl dont want to think about it until it is more of a reality then i understand that, but to say you will NEVER be effected by this is false.

i voted indifferent just because I don't want to worry over something i can't change. Not that i don't care but I just rather live in my happy fantasy land where everything is ok
DH says i'm unrealistic but i try to be content no matter what happens

I just wanted to clarify that its not that I dont CARE its just that I always live way below my means so there is really nothing I could do to save more money short of selling all of my belongings and living off the grid. I DO of course care about everyone affected by the poor economy and i pray that they can quickly recover!

hahaha i understand. Although just have to point out that i didnt mean people have to save more money to care bc with costs going up it is hard to save more money that you normally would. I was saying more about caring because prices are going up on everything, many companies are going under so some people worry about losing their jobs, also about taxes going up to pay for all this, the worse it gets the harder it will be to get a home from a bank, more along those lines.

i shoudl clarify again it DID directly effeect me but not the past few months.. my dh has had to get a new job his company got bought and downsized.. but we took it in stride...so it did most certainly effect us.. and it migth again b/c he's going through it again 3 years later...

and to answer the other poster (*sorry didnt quote ),, we dont plan on moving for awhile..we won't even LOOK elsewhere until this house sells... when we decide to put it on the market.. i dont think it will be quickly...and we dont really plan or need to make money off of it although tthat would be nice.. we live in reality but a modified stress-less (as possibble) one.. durign the wedding planning process we realized life wasn't worth stressing over b/c you never know what's going to happen.. just take the hits as they roll in.. you'll kill yourlsef wtih all the what ifs... and youll miss all the possible fun times you'll have

i understand, and that is great and for me this works bc like i said, i was never somebody who freaked out about things and didnt stress things. Even in the past when things went wrong, i dealt with it and said that this is life and freaking out won't help out the situation and just to find solutions. People didnt understand how i stayed calm during bad times. BUT everybody is different and what works for some doesnt work for others. While its easy for you and even me to say you cant kill yourself with all this, others cant do this. So keep in mind its not as easy for others. My DH is manic depressive and even small things will worry him and stress him out more than the average person. I personally dont understand how small things can set him off but again it is who he is and i have to remember that. When things go wrong his stress is more intense than the average person. My stress comes more from me worrying about him and how stress will effect him. Before him i wouldnt worry about problems, now with him i worry about his well being so to me this is extremely important. I know what happens when there are obstacles and right away, i think about how to make it easier for DH and what I could do to help him. I'd rather take on all the stress for him and worry bc i can handle it unlike him. If i could i would taken on all the stress for him but it doesnt happen that way. And telling him theres no reason to worry about things bc it wont make a difference, its easier said than done.

Just because ppl pay attention to what goes on, doesnt mean they spend their lives worrying about things. We pay attention but obviously go on with our lives and have fun and enjoy it. Not sitting around all day stressing about it and effecting other aspects of our lives.
