Anonymous poll for newlyweds about bank accounts

now that you're married, what are doing with your and your DH's banks accounts?

DH and I have had at least 1 argument about what to do about our accounts now that we're married... so I wanted to know what everyone else has done.

there's no option for :

joint savings, but separate checking

Hey Dina...

We're keeping our saving & checking accounts in our own banks/CU, but adding each others names. AND we're opening a separate joint account in another bank.

Reason being this...

I LOVE my CU. Big problem is it's upstate. I refuse to let go. They have incredible deals that you cannot get at any bank. DH belongs to Astoria...I cannot stand them. They're horrible - from what I see he goes through.
So...we decided to open up an acct at WAMU. Starting with savings and eventually opening a checking acct if needed.

I hear ya... my DH has an account with USAA (for military and their family) and they also have incredible deals, so he is definitely keeping that account, even though the bank is in TX.

but what do to with our normal everyday accounts..... we're still unsure.

Dh dropped his bank acct's and I put him on my savings and checking at hsbc. His bank was AWFUL.

Since we moved, I cancelled my WAMU account - they game me 100% wrong info when I moved, so it was easy to let them go. DH has a few accounts in NY that he hasn't cancelled yet, but when we got here, we opened a joint checking and savings and next year, he will transfer his NY accounts down here and I'll open my own.

we are keeping our own accounts - we are only in our late twenties and need to keep accounts as long as we can to help our credit - closing accounts after a few years does not help credit - so we are keeping our old accounts

and then we opened a joint set of accounts

We opened a joint account at the CU where I have banked for years when we got engaged as we were planning on buying a house too. The CU was the best when we were searching for a mortgage and also has great deals. DH closed his accounts so his money goes into the joint account and mine goes to my checking/savings. I take care of the bills and we use his for spending.

We opened a joint checking and savings with our wedding gift money. Once I legally change my name I will close my account and transfer the funds into the joint account. Once DH sells his condo he will be doing the same. We both bank at the same bank anyway and opened a joint account at that same bank.

We've had joint everything since we moved in together, a year and a half before we got married. Maybe not the best financial decision, but he works for Chase so I could only get employee benefits by using a joint account.

Joint everything. I really don't see a reason to keep separate accounts. There is no upside. We pay our bills together, save together and use the accounts together.

I do think it's hard to get out of the habit of having your own account, but for us it just made sense. It's not like we're roommates, we are a union in every sense.

We both still have our seperate accounts. For no other reason then - well, I guess maybe location? I did add him to my account - this is the one all the wedding checks went into and the same bank where we got our mortage - but he doesn't use it. Mostly we just added him b/c when i tried to deposit some checks that were to both of us, they gave us a hard time so this just makes it easier. He's a member of a credit union, so we wanted to keep that open, and he had opened a small account near where he works so he can withdraw money w/o a fee. None of our accounts have fees, so it doesn't really matter.
We each pay our own credit cards from our accounts and different bills. It's not really like we keep it seperate to make it 'this is mine, this is yours' - I guess we just do it out of convienence - or maybe it's laziness?

We've lived together for over 2 years, and once we moved in togehter we merged everything. We have a joint checking and savings here in Michigan, and one in NY that has all of our wedding giftsin it.

DH is bad with money and paying bills so I take care of everything and every once in a while let him know how much we have saved, etc.

All the major accounts are joint (savings and checking) but we each have kept one small checking account for discretionary $ and convenience.
