another GTG in home question

Hi.

I know in my previous post I was unsure about having something at my place, but here is another question.

When you have people over do you go all out with h'ors doeuvres i.e cudite, fruit platters, shrimp, or do you just keep it simple- chips in a bowl and put all your energy into making the main meals?

As for me- I LOVE snacks.

Whenever I have something I make so many h'ors doeuvres, that people hardly have room to eat dinner.

Re: another GTG in home question

It totally depends on the occasion & who the guests are.
Our home is set up better for mingling parties rather than sit down parties-so I prefer to do fancy finger foods & appetizers & make it more of a cocktail party.

Re: another GTG in home question

The last GTG we had, the focus was on dinner but we have been known to be extravagant on snacks. I think it depends on my mood, lol.

Re: another GTG in home question

I am all about cooking and feeding my guest but it really all depends on who is coming over. My sister has come over to eat and I only made Lasagna. Others just the main course and that is enought.

Sometimes I have cheese and crackers or other times shrimp cocktail. I think it should really depend on your mood.

For example: If Curly comes over I HAVE to make her stuff mushrooms and Flan PLUS main course LOL. You know I am joking girl

Re: another GTG in home question

I go overboard when I have guests!

Kiesha theres a great mexican dip you should try. It's so easy to make, it's made with a layer of cream cheese on the bottim, then on top layer the shredded taco cheese, and then on top layer (cover it with) salsa, microwave for 2 minutes. This is always a hit when people come over. I just made it Sunday. Use a corningware or flat glass bowl.

Re: another GTG in home question

It depends on the occasion and who is attending. If my parents are coming over for Sunday dinner then I have maybe cheese/crackers, chips/dip. If I have friends coming over for dinner I do a number of apps- baked brie, taco dip, veggies/dip, hot apps. I buy that huge box of hot apps from Costco so I always have stuff on hand.

I enjoy entertaining so I like to try new things and have plenty of food.

Re: another GTG in home question

If its a formal gathering (like i invited a bunch of people over as opposed to just a haning out sort i think) i tend to do some really nice fruit/cheese/crackers/chips/dips/crudite platters. People love them and they are always eaten right up.

For christmas and stuff, i do the fruit and cheese platter as well as some hot hor'd like stuff mushrooms b/c people are always hungry before dinner.

Re: another GTG in home question

If you want to keep it simpler, tell your guests to arrive later, AFTER dinner. Then you can offer them snacks, cheese and wine, and later in the evening a light dessert.

For snacks, I usually go for some of the usual chips & dip but always always offer something more 'fancy'---even if it's pigs in a blanket or mini quiches.

It takes all the pressure off you to make a big meal.

ETS: You can even have a 'Cocktail Party.' No one expects dinner at a cocktail party. It would be a good way to get used to entertaining without having to go all out.

Re: another GTG in home question

Our place is too small for any formal sit-down dinner, so every year we have a Christmas cocktail party. I go crazy on hors derves, but no dinner - just finger foods and drinks.

kmc made a good point about the time - we always have people over around 8 PM so it's clear no dinner will be served!

Re: another GTG in home question

It really depends. However, I prefer cocktail party type gatherings.
