If I wrote down on my marriage certiicate only DH's name - does that preclude me from hyphenating now?

Re: ANother last name questions
I think so. What's on your certificate is what it's supposed to be. I know some women who hyphenated on their certificate and now personally have dropped their maiden but their tax returns etc. are still hyphenated.
The problem really stems with inconsistencies. When you use different versions of your name you can run into problems later on especially with Social Security (yes, they can deny you benefits for years you worked if your names do not show official changes), medical insurance, financial matters or if God forbid someone has to take care of your affairs for you someday.
I know alll of this because my uncles had major problems with my Grandmother's affairs when she could no longer take care of her own bills etc. She used various versions of Catherine, Kitty, Kate, Mrs. James H.
Big companies are not going to take the time, nor are they going to care, if there are inconsistencies with our names. They'll just deny us coverage, claims, etc.

I believe so. That is the legal document so any other name change (which going from DH's last name back to hyphenatng) requires a court visit.

Re: ANother last name questions
I was going to change my name (so I indicated such on my marriage certificate) and decided against it afterward. So far, I haven't had any problems. I think a marriage certificate is one of those things that no one really considers as binding. I bet you could still hypenate provided you went to social security, dmv, etc.. and changed it to the same spelling.

The fine print on the marraige license says that any decision you make about your name can be changed in the future, but not on the certificate. So, you can decide to hyphenate at this point, but to do so, you'll have to go to a lawyer and your marraige certificate will remain as it is. You will get some kind of documentation from a court saying that you are legally a hyphenate.

That is incorrect information. My father is a Social Security Disability attorney, and I (just took the bar exam) have worked for him for a very long time. Many clients come in with different names, and as long as they are able to sufficiently prove it, it is fine. I recently worked in a file where a gentleman had 3 different IDs (work, license, birth certificate) all with different last names, and it is fine.
