Any NYC teachers?

Any NYC teachers?

Quick question..

DH is a nyc teacher. He has tenure and has had tenure for four years now. Miserable in his school to the point of wanting to puke in the morning before he walks in the door.

I know there are no jobs to be had anywhere..and the climate right now is terrible for a move...BUT. my questions is:

If he were to move to another school within the NYC school system, does he keep his tenure? If he moved to a new school and technically was most recently hired..would he be the first fired if they were to cut back teachers even if he has tenure and other teachers in that school don't?

Just curious because I want to advocate for him to leave if he can but he thinks its too unstable to move schools right now even if he were by some miracle to get a job somewhere.

I am not a teacher at all so don't quote me on this, but I have many friends who are NYC teachers. It is my understanding that as long as he stays in an NYC school he will retain his tenure. (A friend of mine got laid off despite not being the newest hire in her school because the newest hire had tenure, if I remember correctly.)

But I would have an actual NYC teacher verify this because like I said, I think that is what happened.

I'm pretty sure he keeps his tenure there are other factors...if he has tenure and there are people below him in his school (even people who are also tenured) his job is more safe than if he were to move and be the lowest tenured person there. I've heard somethings about building tenure too but I'm not sure what that means.

I think he'll have a REALLY hard time finding a job now. We have an emergency UFT meeting at lunch today to talk about the budget cuts that Klein has proposed. I read about it and in my district alone (30) there are supposed to cut 7% of staff! : I would rather stick with a school I hate than possibly not find a job!here's the link to excessing

Edited because I read the layoffs wrong.

They have no principal right now and the AP is looking for a new job. Its a really sad state of affairs in his school. Major chaos. However, since he is a social studies teacher for grades 2-5 and has more preps than a lot of the other teachers, he is being forced to pick much of the slack. He is certified for building supervision and so ends up with a lot more responsibility than he would like when the AP is out.
