Any other ladies have PCOS?

I know its very common. I just found out I had it last year.

I saw a reproductive endocrinologist who put me on BCP to keep my period regulated (before that I was getting it once every 3 months).

I'm going to have to go back in January and then I'll probably talk to her about TTC in depth (last time it was before the wedding so it wasn't so much a thought in our heads). Now that it's becoming more of a reality I'm slightly worried.

I stil worrying about having kids because I know its more difficult. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same situation.

Re: Any other ladies have PCOS?

I do! My GYN said I would have no problem and I am really not worried. That so many women have PCOS and don't know it and have healthy babies without a problem.

Re: Any other ladies have PCOS?

I have pcos and its been a battle, I was diagnosed when I was about 18 so my dr put me on bcp but then I developed blood clots thanks to the lovely pills. So I am screwed lol. I usually get my period twice to three times a year I never really worried too much as we weren't ttc. Now we have been trying for 6 months and nothing. I am going to a new fertility doctor tomorrow. So hopefully she will give me some new options

Re: Any other ladies have PCOS?

I have PCOS, but I can't take BCP because of a blood condition. My gyno said that she is not worried about us ttc, it may take a little longer. When we start trying I have to talk to my Hematologist because my blood condition is more of a problem.

on a side note I have a friend that is on baby #3 and she has PCOS, - it took her over a year for #2, but 1 and 3 were pretty quick.

Re: Any other ladies have PCOS?

I'm so glad I'm not alone on here. Jackie, I remember you telling me about your friend. That's very comforting to know!
Sometimes I just get worried about how it will effect our efforts when we start TTC. But it makes me feel alot better when I hear stories about women with PCOS who have successfully gotten pregnant.

What blood condition do you have? I have MTHFR gene defect and take baby aspirin daily (for life). I had two miscarriages. It scares me so much

So colleen, I don't have PCOS, but I have a blOod condition and thyroid so it makes me really nervous. You're doing the right thing with the RE! Hugs and good luck. I know it scary.

Re: Any other ladies have PCOS?

I have it. I was diagnosed when I was 13 (my mom has it so they were pretty sure I would have it too). I'm on BC and Aldactone. They told my mom she would never be able to have children and here I am so I'm not losing hope about having kids. I figure if it's meant to be then it will happen for us. I'm not going to go through In-Vitro or anything like that.

Since I am overweight my doctor told me that if I get in shape, there is a chance the disease may disappear or not hinder my ability to have children. So that's where I'm at now and when we start trying in about 4-5 years, hopefully we won't have any issues.

Re: Any other ladies have PCOS?

I was never diagnosed as having PCOS but I had so many cysts on my ovaries growing up that I got my period 2 times before I turned 18.

A doctor put me on birth control and I was on it for 11 years. The cysts were gone from being on the pill.

When I went off the pill (February 2008), I never got my period. My doctor prescribed provera to jump-start my period and clear my lining after 89 days.

After that, I did get my period on my own but it took another 85 days. The cycle after that, I needed the provera again (my doctor didn't want me going more than 90 days without a period because he didn't want my lining to get that thick).

After that, I did get my period on my own but it was very erratic. Some months, 65 days, some 59, some 80, some 34. I did get a cyst again (and could feel it) and went and had a sono done and there was a cyst... but after my cycle came naturally, it went away.

So over 22 months, my period finally got more 'regular' -- 34 days then 59 days pretty much every other cycle switching off. I had cysts come and go twice during that period of time.

We started TTC (well, really, we just stopped using alternate protection, since I didn't temp or chart or anything) after 23 months off the pill. I never really thought about whether I was ovulating or not since I did get my period. I didn't really even think that happens very often.

My GP had said that if we TTC for 6 months and had no luck, she'd talk to us about options and testing. I got PG during my third cycle after we started 'trying.' It was still an irregular, long cycle. My OB estimates I conceived on CD46. I didn't get my BFP until CD62.

So it's definitely possible to have long, irregular cycles and still get pregnant, but if you have a diagnosis like PCOS, you should find out if that means you're definitely not ovulating or not since it can go either way. Whether you want to pursue aggressive help in TTC or not is a very personal decision, but I truly believe knowledge is power and you're definitely on the right path thinking about it now. You and your doctor and your husband can talk about approaches, timelines, and options.

Good luck and wishing you the best!!

Re: Any other ladies have PCOS?

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. As far as options when TTC, I'm going to be asking ALOT of questions when i see my gyno this week and the reproductive endo. next month.

Re: Any other ladies have PCOS?

one of my BMs was told at age 13 she had PCOS and would never ever be able to have kids .... she got prego after a few weeks of trying and had her baby last week

actually, my other BM also has PCOS and also gave birth about a month ago. she had to use some hormones though. it took her about 3 months to get preggo.

good luck to you with your baby-makin!

Re: Any other ladies have PCOS?

Me I just found out that I have another cyst on my right ovary. I have to get it together before we start TTC. And now I have to switch OB/GYN who I've been with for about 10 years...he's who I wanted to deliver my children Insurance issues.

My PCP told me that changing my diet and cutting out sugars, bread, etc will help control sugar and hormones which effect the cysts.

I'm just hopeful that as long as I follow my doctor's recommendations and stay in prayer that everything will be fine

Goodluck

Re: Any other ladies have PCOS?

I have NOT been diagnosed with PCOS which now makes me want to visit my OBGYN to make sure I am ok...I have a family history of long menstrual cycles..My mom got her period when she was 18 years old..and some of my aunts have had a harder time conceiving and they had to lose weight to be able to conceive. it took my mom 3 years to have me, but all in all my biggest fear in life is being infertile. its the most scariest thing ever. I just got off the pill so I can regulate it to a point I can track it, but its stil probably going to be 34-60 days long. Somehow I plan to achieve this 'regulation' while at the same time avoiding TTC since we dont want kids for t he next 4 years..
