no offense to those who are lawyers, but I just think they are the laziest SOB's ever! I just had someone hand me a letter to fax and mail, and I asked him if he wanted a copy. He said no he already made one, but I need to send a CC to somenoe else, which means I have to make a copy for them.
Why couldn't he have just done that when he made himself a copy????? Is it really that hard?
And this one lady always asks me to freaking file folders for her in a big alley that we have. It's really not that hard to find the letter and stick it in the drawer. I just don't know why they have to ask us to do the most simple tasks that they could very well do themselves. Does it make them feel superior to us? Does that help them sleep at night? I don't get it.

Re: anyone else work with lawyers???
Sorry but as a lawyer I feel compelled to respond to this. Not all lawyers are lazy, and I do a lot of that stuff by myself. However, I do have a secretary and a receptionist who I ask to do copying and filing, which is their job description. You have to understand that lawyers are extremely busy working on motions and going to court and we don't have time to file papers.

Okay, I will just say then in my own office.I agree that they are busy, but when I stop by and their feet are up on the desk and they are playing solitaire, I just get a little angry sometimes. Especially when I have a ton of work to do for them also, and they ask me to fax something when the fax machine is right there next to them and everything is on speed dial. Just venting :)

I work for lawyers (assigned to 3 guys) and I have to say they are pretty good. I know for the most part they will do certain things on their own, but that is what I am here for so it really depends. If they are headed that way (to make copies or something) they will do it themselves if they are pressed for time or busy working on something I will do it. I can't complain about the guys I work for they are wonderful. I see other secretaries here deal with real winners but I think you can find that anywhere.

I have to say my boss is VERY self-sufficient, so I can't complain. When we've been really busy he knows to just get out of my way. Sometimes he'll want to help and I know what I need to do when I have a lot to get out...I'd rather not have any help. I work directly for him too, so it's not like I'm dealing with a bunch of lawyers and being pulled in all directions.

I don't know what your job description is, but I don't fax my own papers either. We have a receptionist who files all of our papers, faxes, etc. That is why the attorney hires someone to do these things. I am just a little confused why you think it is their job to do that. of course if a fax has to go out and the receptionist isn't there I will do it but its not my job just like its not the receptionists job to meet with clients or go to court.

Yup I know what you mean. I know all lawyers aren't like that. My boss, however, is good for making me stop what I'm doing, opening up his cell phone, giving me a number to take down, then tell me to dial it and put him on the phone with them. Seriously, I updated his cell phone account to have unlimited minutes, all he had to do was hit send

lucky. I work for about 7 different lawyers. If I have one that wants me to file something away, then someone asks me to fax something, and then my boss will tell me to take dictation for him right away! Last week I left a fax on my desk and forgot to send it out b/c my boss came in and swamped me with some things that had to go out right away. =/ I know they work hard, but I am also working just as hard to keep up with all of them and do what they need me to do! I just wish some of them would be a little more self sufficient sometimes. :-/

I guess I hit a nerve. I am sorry for that. I should've said my own office and not everyone. =D
I know what my job is, and I am more than happy to help them out. But when you have to deal with 3 different people asking you to do the same thing at one time, and they see you are swamped, it would be nice for them just to say 'it's okay, I got it'. when it's something as simple as faxing something. :)

Well, I do work for other managers in the office, but I report directly to him. Unfortunately, that is the environment in some law offices or large firms. I guess it comes with the territory.

Re: anyone else work with lawyers???
my boss's desk probably has some papers on it from 1980. He attempted to ask me to help him straighten it up once, and I got a good chunk of it done, and then I walked in there one day and it looked like the file room exploded onto it. It just regenerates itself every now and then, there is no stopping it!
