Anyone ever been to any non-inclusive resorts in Mexico?
So, here is the deal. My mom has a timeshare and we are thinking of doing a mini family vacation in Mexico (mainly Riviera Maya since the flights are cheaper).
I am trying to make this a somewhat reasonably priced vacation (since we just came back from our honeymoon) so I wanted to do a non-inclusive resort (since im not concerned about the booz).
There are a few units available at the Mayan Palace resort, however, I am concerned about the price for food in the area. Has anyone ever been to this resort or this area that can tell me if the prices for dinner/lunch are reasonable and what to expect?
Also, I wonder if the non-motarized sports are included (such as snorkling)?
Also, i wanted to inquire as to whether this area is reasonable for families? My father recently passed away and my mom is coming on vacation with us and I dont want her to be depressed or awkward if they all seem to be more couply resorts!! I dont want us to be the only families there!
Thanks!!

I went to Playa del Carmen and stayed in a hotel in town (on the end opposite of the resort area) and it was my favorite trip of all time. Food was not badly priced at all. We avoided the expensive tourist traps on the main tourist street. and ate great food... There is nothing like eating cerviche on the beach with sand under your feet! There is also a target or walmart in town so you can buy snacks and other food.
I did not stay at the resort you mention but the town itself is not too couple-y. HTH

We went to La Isla Mujeres for our christmas vacation. We stayed at the avalon Reef Club - it was absolutely amazing! It was also the most affordable vacation we could find, and so beautiful. You fly into cancun and then take a ferry to the island. The resort has the option to do all inclusive or not. We didn't, and were so glad we didn't because everything was sooo cheap, and there were so many great restaurants you could walk to. I really can't recommend this place enough. There were families as well as couples there when we were there. We booked flight and hotel through orbitz. Good luck!
