Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

When I was very young, my grandfather had a beach house in this area. I havent been back since but I have a very dreamy warm fuzzy feeling about this place and have been thinking of going back next summer.

Can anyone tell me anything about it? Like if its crazy expensive, if there are things to do, what its like, etc..

Thanks :D

Re: Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

I actually live in Southold which is the town right before you get to Greenport. We've only been living here for about 8 months, but, we go into Greenport occasionally. It is such a cute town. I don't really know I'd say there is 'a lot' to do, but there are a number of restaurants and some bars/clubs. It's a really nice town to just wander around - lots of cute boutiques and stuff. And if there's not enough to do, it's really close to a lot of winerys.
As far as expensive - well, it's not as expensive (I don't think) as the Hamptons, but, I think since the Hamptons are getting so crowded and more people are coming here, it is definately getting more so.
Hope this helps a little.

Re: Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

My husband grew up in Mattituck, his family is still there. (this town is also on north fork... very close to Greenport).....it is one of my favorite parts of LI. It is quaint and more rustic than the Hamptons, but it is getting pricier. As far as things to do - there are a lot......local farmstands with great produce, antiquing, vineyards, lots of good restaurants including Claudio's in Greeport and The Soundview which has a view of...the LI Sound . Of course there are the beaches.....the ones on the Sound are very pretty.

Re: Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

I've been going to Greenport since I was really young - my parents have a summer home out there. There isnt a whole lot to do but it is a really cute town to spend some time in. There are also a few bed and breakfasts that are adorable, but I dont know how expensive they are. There are some yummy places to eat and have coffee (Aldo's Too) or ice cream (Sandpipers).

Re: Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

Stef - I've never stayed there but have been through the area, and it's beautiful, but quiet. Aside from the beach (LI Sound), wineries and a few nice restaurants there isn't a whole lot to do, which is great if you're not looking for any exciting nightlife (with the exception of 1 vineyard, I most are on the North Fork)

Re: Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

When I say 'to do', I sort of mean during the day. Shopping, restaurants, movies etc.. We are rarely out past midnight :D

I went searching on google and it seems the only houses for sale in the area are in the $800K range!! Yikes!

Re: Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

I think, especially in today's market, the entire East End (both forks) are out of control as far as RE. Even the areas that aren't too close to the water....

Re: Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

I think it depends on where you want to buy...on the water...or not on the water...

I know that there are some 'regular' homes out there as my mom's friend lives out there...but like their generation...housing prices (especially out east) were very low...

Re: Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

The north fork used to be the undiscovered fork and real estate was much cheaper as a result. My inlaws had their first house built in Mattituck for $10k - that was 30 yrs ago......They are in their second house and its on 1 acre and worth probably 500k. The house is a basic 3 br ranch and not on the water and its more all yr round than Greenport (Greenport as I said earlier is 10-15 mins East and is more summer homes, second homes -the region in general is hard to touch now.) The taxes however are still much lower.

One of the reasons is because Cook & Pony Farms realtors have taken over the area. (the same tony realtors as the Hamptons area)....

Re: Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

I love, love, love Greenport! It's such a cute little town and we are planning to go back there later this month to spend an overnight there...I cannot wait!

But earlier this summer Jeff and I had a bad experience at Claudio's (the restaurant) and for that, I do not reccommend eating there. They have very poor customer service - JMO, based upon what happened to us. I have eaten there previously without incident, but this time was unforgivable.

Re: Anyone know anything about: Greenport, LI

I am from Sag Harbor (as I have said too many times!! haha) We used to go to Greenport at least 2 times a month....we take the ferry from Sag Harbor to Shelter Island an SHelter Island to Greenport....browse around the town....eat some ice cream...go to Meson Ole....there is a big beautiful Merry Go Round...and in September there is the maritime Festival there which is really nice..music...vendors...food...its always a beautiful time of year then....as far as much else to do during the day, not really..in my opinion, not a hell of a lot to do during the day IN Greenport...like the othes have said there is wineries and stuff outside of town...

Have Fun if u do decide to go! I love Greenport!!
