I am curious to find out more details on what happens when you have milk products. Do you always feel sick or only when you have alot of something. Please fill me in with as much detail as possible! THANKS!

Re: Anyone lactose intolerant?
I am and DH is. It's weird because it's not always the same reaction to dairy. Sometimes it'll take a day or 2 to affect me and then sometimes I won't even be done eating and I'll have to run to the bathroom. Other times it'll be later that day. I think it depends on how much dairy is already in your system but that's a complete assumption of mine.
eta: I should add that most of the time my symptoms include horrible stomach pains but I also have IBS so I'm not sure which stomach ailment causes what symptoms

Re: Anyone lactose intolerant?
I have medically induced lactose intolerance.
If I have any dairy, within an hour you can hear my stomach from across the room, I get HORRIBLE pains and I have to visit the ladies room!

Re: Anyone lactose intolerant?
I am. Its very weird, b/c it has gotten much less intense as I've gotten older. When I was little, I used to throw it up immediately (sorry) Now, sometimes I'm 100% fine with things like milk or yogurt, but if I have mozzarella, or my evil arch nemesis ricotta cheese, I get very bad stomach pains, and only sometimes get sick...

Re: Anyone lactose intolerant?
I am. I either get bloated, and very uncomfortable or just really sick. I have about a 10 minute window from when I eat whatever dairy product I consumed....
Im better with SOME cheeses, I can't have brie, ricotta, feta, and some others.

Re: Anyone lactose intolerant?
i'm not but i think DH might be sort of. he use to have cereal with skim milk in the morning and then get a stomach ache. he switched to the milk i use the silk light vanilla soy and that doesn't happen anymore. however, BIL's ex gf was so so lactose intolerant but she said she refused to let it rule her life. so she would use butter, milk, tons of cheese, (way more dairy products than i even use) and then have to get up in the middle of a meal to go to the bathroom sometimes several times....out at resturants...and even at thanksgiving.....she was so gross about it...and it can't be healthy....i never understood it i would think it would be so uncomfertable as some of you described.....

Re: Anyone lactose intolerant?
*raising hand*
It only developed a few years ago and it doesn't make me sick all the time. I'm mostly sensitive to creamy foods and soft cheeses rather than all dairy. It truly stinks when I go out to eat and want to try everything and top off dinner with ice cream. I miss my younger more tolerant belly!

Re: Anyone lactose intolerant?
My uncle is, and has been since a very young age. If he has anything with dairy products in it he will go to the bathroom and have severe stomach pains and lots of gas.
I mean, it's not like certain death, but who wants to deal with that?
My mother and I have adapted to making all of our meals w/out milk products just in case we prepare something for him and accidentally use milk. We have found pretty good recipes and substitues for foods that we normally eat that are really yummy. If you need any help in that department I can give you a few tips and recipes. :)

Re: Anyone lactose intolerant?
I am not lactose intolerant but my friend is and I wanted more info. Mostly I wanted info because I get strange stomach aches from time to time and cant figure it out. I dont drink milk but I do have yogurt and that is ok. I do have string cheese and that is ok too. I have kept a food journal and the only correlation I see is the stomach problems come when I go to parties and have aLOT of cheese and crackers, cheese dips, etc, anything cheese in big quantities. Hmmm. Ok thanks for the help so far. BTW...my stomach issues have been going on forever and I really should see a dr but am too lazy.

When my lactose intolerance got really bad i read a book on it and they say yogurt is ok to eat because it is cultured. They also say parmesan and romano cheeses are ok because they are aged. There is also a brand of swiss cheese (finlandia) that is supposed to have less lactosse. Sometimes you can have slight lactosse intolerance where the build up of dairy products will give you a reaction. Your body might be able to handle some dairy but not too much of it will make it harder for your body to break down the lactose enzyme. I don't know if I'm describing it properly but I think I'm getting the point across.

OMG thanks for this explanation! I am trying to get caught up on dr appts and think I will get tested to be safe. I just get these awful stomach pains where I cannot move, I have to lay down. Ok I wont go into too much detail right now.

try tofutti cuties. They're pretty good and lactosee free. Do not get the chocolate! They have definitely not perfected lactose free chocolate ice cream. You should be able to find them in your regular supermarket. The box looks like this
