I'd like to stay home for the first year and then i might go back to work but part time only and work as close to home as possible.

It's not going to be possible for me because I plan to have babies during residency and there is only a certain amount of time that I can take off. I'll try my best and i'll be home as much as I can

I don't see being able to have the lifestyle that we want on just one salary.
I'd love to stay home for a few months, but I think I would LOSE MY MIND if I did it permanently.
A lot of my friends were stay at home Moms, and for some of them it was great....others really resented it in the end.
We'll see what happens when the time comes; one never really knows how they will feel until they're in the situation.

I wish I could, but I don't think we would be able to afford it. I would even Love to work Part-Time, but we will have to see.
I would also Love to take the first year off, but I think it's 3 months.

I'm with you on this! I don't think it would be financially possible for me to be a stay at home mom... as much as I'd love to! Also, I really love what I do -- and I'd want to get back to work at least part-time. It's actually something I think about A LOT because I really want to raise my own children and not rely on daycare -- but I guess we'll see what we can financially afford to do when the time comes!

me! thats the only way i agreed to have a child my mom was a stay at home and i think thats the only way id ever do it.. but to each his own.. most people can't afford to do that

nope..... I know for a fact I'd go nuts.... I need intellectual stimulation.
Besides, why go to school for 9 years, and then another 3 of training, just to call it quits 4 years into my career?
My hat is off to the parents who can be stay at homes..... It takes a strong personality to handle that 24/7 without a break.

I would love to but it just doesnt seem to be a possibility for me. I am in a doctoral program pursuing a career as a clinical psychologist and i still have like 5 more years. we may TTC before i finish, maybe close to my last year internship so i can stay at home for a few mths in between intern/graduating and finding a real job. who knows, if dh is successful in his writing pursuits, maybe he will leave his teaching job to stay at home. i know he'd LOVE to. hopefully at some pt, ill have my own practice and can create a flexible schedule to be w/ my kids as often as possible, maybe even work out of my home.

I plan to stay home for the frist few years after having kids. But then after that I'll probably go back to work.

DEFINITELY!!! i am not having a baby to pay someone else to raise it...
that said, i am willing to make the lifestyle changes necessary to make that happen... we're broke anyway, so it shouldn't be too hard!
also, fortunately, i am a teacher and i will be tenured so i have job security as well as the option to tutor and do consultant work on the side. i would like to go back to work when the kids are starting school.

If we can work it out financially that I can stay at home I absolutely will. I hate the thought of having to put our babies in day care.

OMG!!! wanna trade hubbies? so kidding!!!
I love my job but I really wish I could be a stay at home mom til they go to school. Ain't gonna happen. Oh well! It'd be scary being away from teaching that long and going back...
What scares me the most is having a baby, being home for a few months on maternity leave, then having to return to work. So many ladies were so depressed this week and I felt so bad! I would be a WRECK!

No. I doubt I would if I had the option but we definitely couldn't afford it. We were so strapped when I wasn't working, add a baby and we'd have major problems. My mom always worked (she was a single mom when I was growing up) so that's the norm for me. We're hopeful that by the time we have kids MIL will be retired or have started her day care center so the kids can stay with her.

No i dont think so, i would prefer to work part time not full time though when we have kids, but DH has other plans for me apprantly. He insists i stay home when the kids are born atleast until they go to school...i told him if i stay home that long the chances of me ever getting hired would be very slim at that point and doesnt seem realistic that one can just enter into the work field again after staying home for a couple of years......so i dont know only time will tell i guess. I really think i would lose my mind though....i need to do something other than being a parents, event hough obviously that would be my top priority!

I will likely continue to work. Although, I must admit, on days when I'm a bit frustrated with my job that I joke about becoming a SAHM just to get out of the workforce. Yes, that's completely the wrong reason to quit. :)

We cant afford to have me stay home. I make the bucks$$$. Maybe at some point DH can stay home or work part time. I love my work way to much to leave or stay home.
