anyone thinking of leaving NY?

anyone thinking of leaving NY?

I'm just so depressed over this whole economy situation, the constant dread of losing our jobs, the thought that at this rate, we're being priced out of our own city!!!

Anyone else thinking of leaving NY? If you are, where to?

DH and I seriously are starting to think about it. We could get double the house for half the mortgage if we left NY and that looks sooo appealing lol.... Also, we could give our kids a decent place to grow up. Just everything about this city is getting on my nerves now lol the traffic, the congestion, etc.

Just worried and venting I guess.

I totally agree with you in every way. I could go on about this for hours. It is so expensive here it is ridiculous and so many people are jaded by it because they have never lived anywhere else. Please girls, do not rip me for saying that but it is so true. I have lived a few different places and DH has lived in 4 different states and he is still so confused why people love it here so much. Yes it has it's perks and yes alot of people want to be by their families but there are so many nice places out there to live that are lower in prices, lower in taxes, little to no traffic or congestions, cleaner, etc, the list goes on. It was such an eye opener leaving here and then coming back. I want to be a stay at home mom and hopefully we will be out of here by then so we can afford it!

I just posted on another thread but I like NC or Delware for alot of reasons. If I had to pick I would chose CA (also pricey) or AZ...expensive too but at least its warm!

After the wedding I moved to California. People are nicer and cost of living is cheaper. I do miss nyc from time to time. I miss the food and the shopping most of all. I don't miss the weather though. We brought a 4BD/4Bath 3100sq ft. home for less than $250,000. Lifestyle out here in Southern Cali is very laid back. No is ever in a rush. But, keep in mind anywhere you move too right now the market is bad.

i hear ya. I'm now outta New York for a while I absolutely LOVED living on the Island, but DH comes from Colorado so we decided to move there for a year or two so that we can save and get our credit good before coming back. I REALLY wanna be back in NY with my family, but if things remain as crappy as they are now, then I'll settle for at least being CLOSER to it.

But seriously - over here in Colorado, we've got a nice 2 bedroom house with a large basement and beautiful yard for WAY less than a crappy studio apartment goes for in NY. So I dunno. It's gonna be hard to leave all this and go back to where freakin' toilet paper is even a luxury I can't afford

Re: anyone thinking of leaving NY?

it's so funny you posted this because i was just online looking at houses in florida! i'm from florida and even though it's not my #1 choice of places to live, i just cannot imagine how we will afford to raise a family here. to see the houses you can BUILD from scratch in fl for like $250K, it just seems ridiculous to stay here. DH and i have these conversations all the time and we go in circles. he grew up in queens and his whole family lives in either queens or LI. not only that, but he never went away for college or lived in another state so the idea of moving is scary for him, but at the same time, we know we would have such a better lifestyle.

personally, i've lived in ny for 10 years now and i'm so over it (no offense, it really is the BEST city) but i'm tired and i'm sick of the rush and the stress. some mornings when i'm commuting through grand central and people are banging into me and my shoulders are hurting from the million bags i carry, it is all i can do not to just lay on the ground and cry

Honestly, I don't think of leaving.I went away to college and LOVED living in a small town. I studied abroad and LOVED Italy and the European laid back way of life. But for me personally, I could never move a plane ride away from my mom, dad, brother, cousins, in laws, etc. My parents have a condo in Pompano Beach, FL and I think wow I could live on the ocean and pay less than what I pay for my coop but for me I know I couldn't leave my family and friends. It's not NY really it's the people keeping me here.

Re: anyone thinking of leaving NY?

DH and I have always agreed that we would leave NY because it is too expensive to raise a family here and we can't afford to buy a house in this area.

I would love to move down south to Charleston and he wants to move back to Chicago. We both like Nashville so that is another consideration.

It sad that we are being priced out of the areas we know and love. If things were different, I doubt we would even be thinking like this.

Yes - DH and I are moving to New Hampshire this fall. Going to start looking for houses in July or so. It's very cheap there - the houses I have seen on realtor.com in the area we want to live are $175K for 3 bedrooms on 2 acres. It's quieter, close to mountains / ocean / lakes (we plan to live just north of Portsmouth, near the NH/ME border) and the people are so nice. We can't wait - but at the same time we are sad to leave family and friends. But it's not that far, people can visit a lot and we can come here a lot ....

I would really really hate to leave NY- I grew up in NJ and have lived a couple other places but did not love anything the way I love living here.

Just wanted to point out, yes houses may be cheaper in other areas- but food prices and utilities, etc are basically the same- but one big problem that I see is that I would take almost a 50% pay cut.

I also don't *think*- admit I dont know- that it would be any easier to get a job anywhere else right now

As much as I hate to think it, we will most likely be leaving NY. Most of my fam is here so it will be hard.
Teaching on LI is just impossible. We have to go where there are jobs.

Re: anyone thinking of leaving NY?

yes absolutely!

first off, i know people dont want to leave their families but honestly i think you get used to being away from family pretty quickly (and i dont mean that in a mean or bad way) i know plenty of friends and family members who went away to college for 4 years and were fine without seeing their families for weeks, even months at a time.... and when my family moved to florida a few years ago i was sad but i got over it pretty quick - sometimes, like with wedding planning, it could be a little sad not having your mom around but i really believe that you got to do what is good for you - what was good for my parents was moving to florida and what was good for me was staying in NY to build a relationship with the man that became my husband

we are thinking, well more than thinking actually, we are moving to florida - its just a matter of when really....when my parents first moved i said i would NEVER go down there (i would say its too hot, there are too many old people, its boring, etc.) but now after living on my own with DH for 3 years i have a different perspective on things....i saw how my parents lived my whole life - in a 3 bedroom townhouse, with 2 kids, STRUGGLING - and now i see the way they live in florida - its a big difference, first off they have a nicer home and they can manage their finances better (especially in this economy!), they are more relaxed, lessed stressed, less rushing....those are the things that are appealing to us now - DH is sick of the hustle and bustle of traveling into NYC everyday, the traffic, we are both sick of the cold weather in the winter, and there are so many things that we can have down in florida that we cant have here - we can have a more luxurious life there - so its kind of like live in a little bit of luxury vs. struggle to make ends meet - its a no brainer....

i am sad to leave - sad to leave friends, sad to leave what i am 'used to', and sad to leave NYC for sure - we already saw two plays this past month just because we are really trying to take advantage of what they city has to offer while we are still here but where we give up we are gaining, no state/city tax which means more money in DH's paycheck, a big house, big yard, a pool, warm weather, slower pace, less stress, i can be a stay at home mom one day (*hopefully*), nice beaches, 40 mins from orlando where there is nice shopping and all of the theme parks, we can even see more movies b/c the movies are cheap there

i dont know, at first part of the lure about florida was that my family was there but now its not even about them, its about DH and I - as a matter of fact we aren't even looking in my parents neighborhood anymore - we are looking in an area closer to where DH will transfer....

ETS: and visiting on the weekends is do-able - we are visiting my parents and doing a little house hunting in a few weeks and the lfight was 84 each way - not bad at all - if i wanted to, i could visit my family monthly - but i just chose not to b/c i am busy with things going on here.....but a 2 hour plane ride isn't bad at all....i do it every few months....

Exactly my point! My parents picked up and moved to NY many years ago during the hard times and recession of the 1970's because they were going to where the jobs were (at that time I guess apparently that was NY)... they had no choice, it was either move really far away where you don't know anyone and leave your family behind, or let their kids starve!.... But now 30 years later DH and I might have to do the same thing, just the opposite though, leave NY... for the same reason my parents came in the first place.. going where the jobs are.... We've been looking for jobs but there is literally nothing for us here anymore! We're running out of options as sad as that is.... I tried explaining this to my mom who is totally heartbroken at the thought of us leaving but she doesn't understand lol She thinks because back then NY had employment opportunities, that it still does, and we should just keep looking.... She's so out of touch sometimes lol... I don't know if anywhere is safe anymore though :(

And seriously, back then they were able to save up quickly and buy their own home with only one income... an almost impossible feat today!

Sorry for the vent! Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way though...

I would def. consider leaving NY, DH on the other hand will never leave so it's not even up for discussion. Maybe when he sees how hard it is going to be for us to buy a house when the time comes he might reconsider...

same here. I keep saying I'd move to Philly or nearby; DH refused to leave NY. I even offered to bring his mom! I just think if i have to live in the burbs someday I'd rather be in a quaint, tree-lined area and have a big house that isn't a million dollars.

you said it Jenna! LI feels very provincial sometimes. I want to move but with DH's job we really don't have many options outside of LI, Staten, Queens & NYC

Re: anyone thinking of leaving NY?

i think if we were in a different situation we wouldnt mind leaving ny.

we visited a friend in florida and saw what he had....a beautiful new home that he owned by himself a few years after college for less than a super tiny old coop here. and we seriously were like omg why are we still in long island.

for us the reality is that dh's mom is getting older and is alone and under a lot of stress because of one of her other children. if we leave, i dont know think she could handle it. also i always dreamed of my kids growing up the way i did with their gma (and great gma).

aside from the current economic situation...i probably could find a job in my field elsewhere. dh's company has offices all over but his job relies on him having contacts who are all here. so that's why we're still here.

its hard......like with florida - we are able to go down there b/c DH can transfer - without that we couldn't just pick up and move. We are able to do it b/c he can go down there with his job and he keeps his NYC salary - so that is what makes the big difference for us.....if you make 100K here but then get a job down south you might only make say 60K (say its a 40% decrease in salary) so even though your house is half the price so is your salary and at that point you are almost breaking even because like someone else said - things like utilities and food are still expensive....BUT if you make 100K down there and your mortgage loan is only 150K that is where you can get ahead.....because now your mortgage payment is very minimal compared to your salary leaving you plenty of room for the rest of your expenses.....

i just hope i can get a good job there - any extra money helps and if i have to work for $10 an hour than so be it - b/c its still extra money that we'll have BUT i really hope i can find something good that is close to what i make now and a 9-5 office job - that is highly unlikely though....
