I'm just so depressed over this whole economy situation, the constant dread of losing our jobs, the thought that at this rate, we're being priced out of our own city!!!
Anyone else thinking of leaving NY? If you are, where to?
DH and I seriously are starting to think about it. We could get double the house for half the mortgage if we left NY and that looks sooo appealing lol.... Also, we could give our kids a decent place to grow up. Just everything about this city is getting on my nerves now lol the traffic, the congestion, etc.
Just worried and venting I guess.

I do miss LI a little (more for family and friends reasons), but live in FL, the most beautiful community. If anyone is considering FL, check it out... it is a master planned brand new community. The homes here are simply amazing, and with how the market it right now, you could steal something... Brand new 5 BR homes, 3k sq ft that were once $500k, are now selling for $250k.. its insane. its a very family oriented community, with a really cute downtown, where there are festivals, music, etc every weekend. the weather here is great too, and the beach is close.... we could not be happier...
yes, it was hard leaving the family and friends, but honestly, we go home all the time.. its a 2:10 min flight from west palm.

Looks beautiful! I would totally consider moving to Florida but DH is paranoid about the hurricanes and the old people lol... I tried explaining that some areas are safe from hurricanes but he's just too paranoid about it lol.... for those that are from FL, what areas are rarely hit by hurricanes that would be a great place to move to?

I dont think any real area is exempt from the bad weather. Even northcentral FL got blasted by tornadoes last yr - scary. The panhandle gets alot of hurricanes too when they roll up the coast. Yea, the old people are crazy, but they really arent too bad around where we live. its mostly young families like us with a few kids. I dont think there is anywhere in this country where weather would not be a worry. you have the landslides, and earthquakes and fires in the west. Tornado alley in the midwest. Hurricanes in the south. Ice, cold and nor'easters in the north! but all new construction in FL as of the last several years are CBS homes (concrete block /stucco), meaning they are not wood frames, and are built to withstand the weather and high winds.

A warning before moving. MSNBC . com just published unemployment rates by state. Check it out. NC and SC have higher unemployment rates than NY.
Not only that, there are LESS jobs in those cities as well.

Seeing that makes me want to move there it's crazy that even with the pay cut the tax makes it only $20 a pay check! I wish they had homes like that in NY...

Re: anyone thinking of leaving NY?
Nope not at all, temporarily maybe but i honestly cant think of anywhere else in the US i would want to live.
I really dont want to move away from our families, i do see how its easy for some but i think alot of situations are hard. For me it would be extremely hard and i know for DH too. My mom has lived far away from her parents for most of her life now, and i get sad for her parents alot bc yes you do go and visit but depending how far away it is, its not going to be often. I guess also since i never grew up with my grandparents, i think about my kids not growing up with theirs. I have visited them or they have come here for a period of time but overall its so little. I also want our parents to be around to help when we have our kids. Its hard to find a babysitter you can trust, and i dont want to leave them in daycare. I think its easier when you move away from your family when youre alot younger, well i mean early 20's or as a teenager. I also think about something happening and us not being right there when it does.
But also overall, i love the city and cant imagine living elsewhere. I want my kids to grow up in a very culturally diverse environment, its important to me. I like that they have so many museums, and the best of everything to grow up with.
But everyone is different, some arent crazy about big city living, and like a more small town feeling. I dont think i can do it, i love having everything at our disposal, and the whole lifestyle.

I totally agree with you in every way. I could go on about this for hours. It is so expensive here it is ridiculous and so many people are jaded by it because they have never lived anywhere else. Please girls, do not rip me for saying that but it is so true. I have lived a few different places and DH has lived in 4 different states and he is still so confused why people love it here so much. Yes it has it's perks and yes alot of people want to be by their families but there are so many nice places out there to live that are lower in prices, lower in taxes, little to no traffic or congestions, cleaner, etc, the list goes on. It was such an eye opener leaving here and then coming back. I want to be a stay at home mom and hopefully we will be out of here by then so we can afford it!
I just posted on another thread but I like NC or Delware for alot of reasons. If I had to pick I would chose CA (also pricey) or AZ...expensive too but at least its warm!
its weird but i like the craziness and the hustle and bustle as weird as it may sound. BUT i do know how alot of ppl do hate it, its like i said though in my other post, everyone is different so thats why people feel differently. Like for me its hard to understand why ppl want to live somewhere very quiet and slower lifestyle lol, but then i remember that we are all different and while its not for me, its for someone else and vice versa. To tell you the truth, i hate even thinking about living in a house where its too separate from other houses. When ive gone away, for example stayed in martha's vineyard and rented a house on 10 acres of land, at night i wouldnt even go out to throw the garbage bc it would creep me out lol. I dont like it when its too quiet, again it drives me crazy.
I dont think there is anything wrong with people leaving ny, i think everyone should do what is best for them and again everyone is different and the lifestyle elsewhere can suit them. But the same way some want to leave NY, others wont want to.

Re: anyone thinking of leaving NY?
I think about it every now and then but then reality sets in. First it's the thought of a better life that is exciting. The truth is I cannot know for sure if my life will be better leaving. First DH and I both have jobs on LI. Moving out of state we would have to find new jobs and if we lost those, well, now we just picked up a new mortgage in an area we don't know, away from our families.
I project the same lifestyle I grew up with and to be honest I'm happy with that. We didn't take expensive trips every year and bought designer jeans growing up but we were happy.
So for now we are staying on LI, enjoying day trips to manhatten, the vineyards, beaches our families and our jobs. 10 years from now what we want out of life may change but we have everything we want.

Re: anyone thinking of leaving NY?
It's going to be really hard but we're determined to do it. We both have pretty steady jobs-he's a teacher and I work for SchoolFood in NYC. I finally found a job that I really like that allows me to spend time with my husband and my family. The pay isn't amazing but it's a pretty safe job and I get to use both of my degrees. I really love the organization and hope to be there for years to come.
Like Denise said I love the hustle and bustle. I commute but I'm home by 4:30 so I miss the terrible rush hour traffic. My dad's always commuted for his job so it's not that big of a thing for me. It would be nicer to have a shorter commute but I just got transferred to a new district and the commute is only an hour and that makes such a difference. I can't imagine living anywhere else. We are close to the city if we want to go in for a few hours but also close to the vineyards in the summer.
Also, all my family is here and I hated that when my sister and I were growing up that our grandparents lived in Florida and California. It was nice to go on trips to see them-but it would be like 5 years in between. That's something I don't want for my kids. I want them to know their grandparents. We are determined to stay here and buy a house this year.

Re: anyone thinking of leaving NY?
DH and I have lived in NC for about 2 years together. We came here after we were finished with our schooling; I had been in Wisconsin, he had been in Buffalo.
We came to NC for three reasons--it was a great place for both of our careers (and NY is not good for my field), DH had gone to college down there and loved it, and house prices were so cheap.
Right out of school we were able to get a 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath townhouse. We had a lot of friends who got larger, fancier places, but we decided that we wanted someplace more manageable where they did the landscaping for you.
We have no regrets about moving here. We're planning on moving to a bigger place with more land--it'll be a much better value than you would get for the money in NY. We also love the location. We're close to the mountains and the water and there are so many parks for hiking out here (a big reason why we could never live on LI).

No. The economy is terrible everywhere. Our friends are here, our family is here, our jobs are here (and we're teachers; transferring our certs to another state can be a PITA). This is home.
