Are box Red Velvet cake mixes ok??

or should i make my own?

we are having a Jersey Shore 2 premier party, with sausitch and peppehs, and i want to keep with italian colors and do a red velvet cake, butter cream icing and green deco.

so should i buy the box mix (is it any good?) or should i make my own? if i make my own, does anyone have an easy recipe that doesn't involve too many crazy ingredients??

thanks!

I've used both the box mix and made it from scratch (icing and all). the scratch one is much better and much more fattening im sure!! haha!! but the box one is good too. so I say do the box one... the scratch one is a lot of work IMO. but can be done. It's really up to you.

We used the box one for the wedding and it was fine. I thought it was delicious!

the first red velvet i tasted was a box mix, and i hated it. making it from scratch makes world of difference!

I have done Paula Deens and the box one. Yes the scratch recipe is better but its a lot more work. THe box one tastes fine. I have Duncan Hines.

I love red velvet cupcakes with real cream cheese frosting. I made the box mix & used the container of 'cream cheese' frosting. Everyone loved them but I don't think they came even close to making it from scratch.
Next time I am making them from scratch.

Paula Deens' cake recipe came out too dry for me - I love the one on bakerella.com. I make that one often with Martha Stewart's cream cheese frosting (the others are all too sweet), and everyone loves it!

I don't find making it to be that hard - and I am not a big baker at all - don't do the box for red velvet!
