Are you in your forever career?

Original post by Mici n KC

Just curious if you're happy with what you're doing or if you plan to change careers? I'm in the process of changing my career and it will take another 2-2.5 years.

No. Right now, I work in a college. But I went to school to be an elementary school teacher. I'm hoping to go back to teaching this fall if I can get a job!

Is that like the people on Criminal Minds? Like profiling?

It could be that but it doesn't have to be. What most people do is work in a psychology unit in prisons or with ex-criminals, stuff like that.

I am & I am pretty sure that I will be at the company I am at until I retire- I love what I do- Marketing- its varied and changes and I never do the same thing two days in a row. Plus for the most part, my company is really great to me & they keep moving me along and there is plenty of room for advancement

i have to assume that I'm where I'll stay (not the JOB, but the CAREER at least). I work with kids, and I think i'll stick with it. I like it, plus I'm good at what I do (at least I THINK i am! haha). And once I have children, I would really like to quit working as a teacher and open my own home daycare. So yeah, I think I'm set in my forever career (unless something happens, like the book i'm working on getting published does well. Then I'd LOVE to write for a living. Oh to dream!!!)

That's really nice. I had loved my very first job out of college, but I was there while in grad school which was in NJ. I knew I wasn't going to stay there forever. Not too long ago the owners retired and sold the business to another company.

God I hope I am not in a forever career. I've been here for 10 years and was in nursing school but met DH and failed by 1 point and haven't gone back, that was 3 years ago. I would idealy love ot go back and finish since I only have a full year to go or I am going I want to get into the health field at some point! Now with the baby I am thinking while I am on maternity leave I can look into it.

You've absolutely should look into it again! Good luck!

Oh hell no. Granted I do work for the State and it's fab as far as my benefts are concerned but, do I want to be a Clerk forever? NO! I'm hoping that when I graduate I can still stay in the State system and just get a new job. They have Accounting positions but they're not always available.

I agree...great move! My exSIL's sister went to nursing school at a later age, and became a nurse when her children were a little older. It was the best thing she did. Last I know, she was a private nurse.

I love my career and the field that I'm in...plus I'm done w/ school. My co-workers are great and the field I'm in is one that is actually flourishing, even in this economy. Plus they are flexible w/ working hours when you have young children, and I work w/ DH

Definitely go for it! My mom went to nursing school when she was pregnant with my sister...you have lots of time to be home studying and taking care of the baby

I own my own daycare now, I don't have any of my children but its very difficult to do this job with your own children. Parents are ridiculous, you get walked all over, no-1 respects you. People don't pay you on time, they come late, bring their kids when they are sick. Being licensed is so much work. I love the kids but I've been doing this for 9 years and I woudn't recommend doing it, unless you can be a real business person. With all that you have to lay out, costs for training, materials, all the meeting you go to. Its insane, I work 70-80 a week, and my weekends are spent getting ready for the next week. I say avoid, unless you can rent outside space, and pay a staff.

I used to think I was but I've been doibting that for a while now. If I didn't have to find a job right away I would've looked into re-training myself into another career. Even though I think I would've felt bad considering I have a Mastaer's and it's realted to what I currently do.

Re: Are you in your forever career?

Six months ago I would have said 'what are you crazy??!?!?!?!?!!' But it seems to be normal to feel that way your first year in nursing. But now, I'm actually enjoying my job plus I'm back at school to further my education. I don't know exactly where I want to be but I'm getting some ideas. Right now I float between the floors. I'm worked with heart monitors, post ops, oncology and in the ER etc. I love that everynight I can be in a new place and learn new things. Normally they don't like new nurses floating but I love it. I'd love to go into critical care and then maybe even teaching if I get my masters.
