Aren't People Nosy?

Original post by songwriterchic

Ever notice how once you're engaged, everyone has to ask, 'How's the wedding plans going'? As if you don't have enough pressure from yourself and family. Then once you get married all you hear is 'How's married life' or...the one I love 'when are you having kids' or some variation on that. Why are people so nosy?

I don't ask 'How's your kids grades...did they make honor roll? Did you pay off your credit card this month?' Seriously, people don't realize how much they pry into your life. I'm like, yeah I got married, get over it already!

It never ends I can only imagine the future.

When are you going to have kids?
When are you having another
What school are you sending them too?
Oh public not private school?
What college does he want to go to?
Did he get a job?
Is he dating?
What do you mean he is not dating is he gay?
Is he dating yet?
Did he get married?
Did they make you a grandmother yet?

When people ask me when I am having kids I just say I don't know then ask them when they plan on dying.

Sounds like they're just making conversation about topics that they know are important in your life. 'How's wedding planning going?' and the other questions in the first paragraph are small talk and nowhere near as instrusive as the ones in the second.

I hate that question.. 'When are you having kids?'
because we are waiting a while.. its like to me I wouldn't have thought to get married and have kids right away.. the way I think it doesn't make sense to me..

DH & I lived together... and are raising a child together..

all that's changed is my name.

but it doesnt annoy me... sometimes people just dont really have much of a gift for conversation... especially if they dont know you on personal level

I agree. I mean unless you knwo the person is generally nosy, I see it as just a question and I never take offense to it because married life is good. So what do I have to be defensive about? I think its asked more simply because we all ARE newlyweds and its just polite conversation.

I don't see it as being nosy, just polite curiousity and making convo. JMO.

The kids one def is touchier; especially if like DH and I, you are considering not having kids and people dont want to hear or accept your reasoning. That's def a tough one, but the marriage question I would say isn't something to ruffle your feathers about unless marriage life is BAD.

HAH yea you have the kiddles-I will borrow yours when I am feeling the mommy bug. Best of both worlds; get to love and spoil a munchkin and then GIVE IT BACK!

We are getting the kids question almost everyday because DH is 42 and I am 38. Am trying not to let it bug me, because mostly our friends and family just want us to be happy. Coworkers are another story, though.

We are TTC, but have no idea yet how easy or challenging it will be for us. You'd think people would recognize that and keep their comments to themselves.

DH has a new response this week, 'Thanks for asking. We'll leave right now and get to work on it'

Most people say, 'That's too much information!'

THEN DON'T ASK US!!!

Re: Aren't People Nosy?

I am so sick of the how's married life question.
No different than single - I still cook, clean, go grocery shopping and do laundry. Oh, and I do have someone to share my bed with, and to wake up next to, and to share the above mentioned chores with, but that's my business.
As to my reply, a simple 'it's nice', suffices.

After the holidays the VP of personnel was walking around, being her nosy self. She came up to my desk and asked how my first married Christmas was, yada yada, all the while trying to get a glimpse of my rings. Not wanting to share anything personal with this plastic phony thing, I looked at her with a phony plastic smile on my face and replied 'no different than any other one when family is involved.'

That's true...I learned the hard way not to ask people about their plans to have babies. Years ago at an old job, my coworkers and I always used to ask this one women why she didn't have kids yet, as her and her husband had been married for a long time and were approaching their forties. Turns out, that had been trying all those years and were unsuccessful. She told us when they finally decided to adopt. We all felt a stupid for putting the baby pressure on her all that time. Now I know to mind my own business.
