This is, of course, a COMPLETELY hypothetical question.
If you were given something for your house that is not your taste at all, would you still display it? This person comes to your house on a semi-regular basis so they would def notice it. (or not notice it.)
ETA: I have no idea why all of the choices say A.

Display it when they come over, hide it the rest of the time.
Seriously, I would (and have) done this!
ETA I picked the wrong poll choice because I am STUPID but I meant to vote for the first option. (I voted for none of the above for whatever reason.)

Re: Awkwardness with decorating
I would just not display it.... but hell, I hid the ugly gone with the wind statuette my husband gave to me for my 23rd birthday. Its in a box in my parent's pool house attic and I just don't mention it. If something is not my taste I feel no need to have it and I will be selling stuff friends gave me at our garage sale this spring and hopefully they don't notice, but if they do, they do.

Re: Awkwardness with decorating
I would honestly tell the person thank you & that it either wasnt you taste or doesnt go with your decor. I went through this already w/MIL- yeah she's bent out of shape about it - but Im not keeping some ugly old shipwheel lamp from the 1970's just b/c it reminded her of the one DH used to have as a kid...NTY!
(THIS IS WHY I TELL PEOPLE TO STICK TO THE REGISTRIES BIOTCHES!)...LOL

If you don't like it at all, don't put it up. It's your house. If it's OK, lean it up against a wall/shelf in another room in your house (2nd bedroom, office, etc).

Re: Awkwardness with decorating
funny you should say this...cuz what i would do is hide it, and keep it in a closet and never take it out, cuz if i dont like something every time i see it, it just annoys the crap out of me, alllllll the time!!!
well i say funny story, cuz my husband decided to joke about wanting gargoyles,he says things to be funny) and one day at my MIL's house we were discussing this, and i was like you think you are funny but we ARE NOT HAVING GARGOYLE at our house!! 2 weeks later, DH shows me a picture, of something his mother bought us for the house! a gargoyle!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was soo angry!!!! she did i purposely to freaking go against me and get her son what HE WANTED!! even tho he was totally just joking about the whole thing!!!i said there is no way we are displaying that ugly thing in the front of our house! its the uglyiest thing ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its in our backyard now, but soon the wind is going to blow it over and shatter it....the wind, aka my foot! what bugs me the most is not that its ugly! but the fact my MIL bought it knowing i didnt want one, and did it anyway to spite me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think i have every right to get rid of it since the person who gave it to us, knew i didnt want it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just wouldn't display it...I've had this issue come up A LOT with the ILs. With my mom I just tell her I don't like it and return it.....

Re: Awkwardness with decorating
We were given some sort of decoration that looks like a branchy tree with birdhouses on it. Not my taste at all. It's in the living room right now displayed by the tv. Once we re-do the room, it's likely going elsewhere, if not the trash. It's from an aunt in FL and I appreciate the thought. But...
Also, MIL emailed me the other day saying how DHs godmother wants to make us a wreath for the house that she makes with wine bottle corks. She wanted to know what colors I would like the bow if I was interested. I didn't want to say flat out that I wasn't interested so I just said that the only room with the colors decided on is the guest room and gave her the color scheme. Again, I appreciate the thought, but I have seen these wreaths before.
I don't have the heart to tell someone I don't like something. Like someone (Jenny?) said on another post 'You get what you get and you don't be upset.' But I totally hear ya...

OMG that just made me laugh so hard!
That thing is seriously creepy! I’d be afraid of it coming alive at night and coming after me with a knife!

Re: Awkwardness with decorating
Jess... thats so funny because the statue I was talking about... I kept saying it was going to accidentally fall out of my 12th story window in DC. Or accidentally get broken by the movers when I came back to NY. But even though I hate it, I couldn't bring myself to break it (because deep down I loved DH) even though we weren't dating at the time. Guess its good since I married DH. Now I pretend it got lost in the move. He hasn't mentioned it so I just keep it quiet that I know right where it is. Hope he doesn't read this thread.
He had the thought process right... Michelle loves movies, Gone with the Wind is a classic romance, this is the romantic scene, I love her... (we were broken up remember)... but somehow it doesn't really transfer. This is it:
Sorry for anyone whose loves this, but it isn't me.

hahahaha! Jess.... actually it's a pretty funny looking gargoyle. I mean... if you HAD to have a gargoyle... this one isn't all that bad.
I hate to say it... but I KINDA like something about it. I think it's the goofy face and the way he is sitting.
that being said... I know what you mean about not wanting it. And she did do it just to spite you which is beyond rude. I say keep it in the yard for a little bit. then he can make his way to an unseen corner of the house. Perhaps the basement?? or under a desk?? or under the bed?? etc.
Since she bought it to spite you.... I'd purposely probably not display it to spite her right back!!

Re: Awkwardness with decorating
Is there somewhere where you could display it but not in a prominent place in the house? Like in a room you rarely use?
I received a lenox vase as a shower gift... wasnt my taste at all (tons of flowers all over it) but i still chose to display it in my china cabinet on the bottom shelf... one that is more out of the way than the upper shelves

Re: Awkwardness with decorating
Let the record show I would totally display the gargoyle.
What I would do/am doing is keeping it out for now...it's perfectly natural to change your knick knacks every so often...so after they've been over a few times, see it a few times, 'redecorate'.

Re: Awkwardness with decorating
I'd say display it for a little while at first and then get rid of it. On the very rare chance they say anything like where did it go, say it broke or something.

Re: Awkwardness with decorating
I think it would depend on what it was and how often the person who gave it to me comes over. If they came over frequently, I would put it in a guest room or the basement or something - that way it's on display but somewhere not important. If it was someone who rarely comes, I would display it in a spot they would see - but only when they come over.
