Babies on the Brain

For those of you who are planning to have children, have you talked about as a couple if one of you will be staying home to give FULL time care??

Re: Babies on the Brain

We have talked about it. We always discussed that I would take maternity leave and stay home for a few months. Sometimes I would think how it would be great to stay at home with the baby. But with me being out of work since the summer, I can now say that I will JUST stay home a few short months and go back to work. It is VERY hard with just 1 income and thats just with the two of us so I couldn't even imagine if we also had a kid. Well hopefully by the time I have a kid i will have a job to go back to

i'm a social worker so i can play around with my career... like get a part time job at night to be home with the baby during the day... in any case, i would LOVE to be home with the baby until he/she goes to school!!

i have had offers from friends who are stay at home moms to watch our children while we are working... i def may take them up on that offer!!

Yeah maybe at first doing just part-time would be great, it would help somewhat. We have our parents that would help so thats one good thing.

I would love to be a SAHM, but I think we might need two incomes. We'll see when the time comes.
If I do work, i'm hoping family will help.

We have talked about this a lot. Our decision is that I would stay home with the baby and maybe go back to work in a year or two afterwards. I really don't think I would be able to have a baby and then go back to work right away.

I cannot stay home because DH owns his own business and I work for the government - so my job is so much more stable PLUS my job has everything like insurance, a pension, discounts - that his job obviously does not.

I have to use my sick leave for maternity leave so I will probably only stay out three months. My mother has offered to watch our children but we also have a daycare at my job.

I never thought I would be a working mother, but sometimes reality kicks in!

We've discussed this and DH has said that he really prefers that I stay him until our child is in school. And then he'd prefer that I just get a parttime job while they're in school for the first few years at least.

I don't mind that and as long as financially we can handle it, that's what we'll do.

i would love to stay home but i think i'd drive myself crazy after a month or so.. and i work for the govt. so it would be very unwise of me to leave.. but we'll see what the future holds..

i know a friend of my who swore she would be back at work in 2 months.. is a stay at home mom and loves it!! so i guess it all depends/.

i would LOVE to be a stay at home mom, but that's currently not an option right now if we where to have kids, so we are hoping that option will change for us in the future

if not, then i will continue to work and with dh weird schedule we would only need a baby sitter maybe 3 days a week and my sister, my mom and mil have all offered to help. Which is a huge relief

Re: Babies on the Brain

As much as i would love to stay home I am an accountant so that wouldnt be an option for me. I would probably have my mom watch the baby until the first 6 months (hopefully to a year) then take the child to day care. I would prefer someone close to me to watch the baby at least in the beginning rather then sending them to day care.

i forgot to mention that Dh gets home early, around 3-4. Last year he was getting home even earlier many times. So it wont be that bad. This year he's had to stay a little later and gets home 4-5...but by the time we have a kid he'll be back to getting home earlier again.

The hubs and I plan on both staying home with the baby... The way this will work is: I'll work day tours, he'll work 4x12 tours so one of us is home with the baby everyday. It may end up that we'll need someone from our family to watch the baby for about 2 hours during the day- so i have time to come home and the hubs has time to get to work. A lot of police families do this. It suucks b/c I will basically never see my husband but he pays a shiitload of child support for his 3 kids so day care is not an option. My baby girl is due next month so we'll find out how it works soon enough!

We talked about it and we decided that I would stay home for the first year and then go back part-time until the kid goes to school. I wish my parents or DH parent's were living in New York so they could give us a hand but since this is not our case...

I am lucky DH & I both work from home, so we will both be able to stay at home with our children.

Re: Babies on the Brain

My mind has changed so many times on this topic in the past few yrs...I think right now, what we would like (when we eventually have kids) is for me to be able to stay home for a bit longer than the usual maternity leave, and then possibly come back to work 3 days a week, or work from home one day...DH is completely okay with me not working, but, besides the income, I feel like the biggest part for me would be losing the adult interaction and having a career...tomorrow you could get a completely different answer from me though!

After discussing this topic with DH he really prefers for me to stay home until our child is in school and then would want me to work part-time afterwards. I think that this may really be our only option because DH works really long hours and he also travels for work so much (atleast 1-2 times a month) that it wouldnt even be possible for me not to be home with kids during the time he is away.
