So I sub, but as many people subbing right now I rarely get called or find a job on Aesop. Its so frustrating that I graduated from a top college, have two masters degrees and no real income. Top it off DH is in CT all the time because that is where his job is based out of. He is supposed to work from home most of the time, the deal they made with him when he left them to take a LI job, but its not going like planned as they have been trying to ship 5 -6 machines a month and need him up there.
Last night DH and I had a long talk about how it looks like we either have to change our situation or we have to push off having a baby another year because we weren't able to save any money this year. I am turning 30 in March and am a DES grand-baby and I don't want to push off trying much longer. What if it takes me 9 years like it took my mom?
So now we have to make a decision...
1) Stay here, continue with DH's commuting, keep looking for a job and push off babies for at least a year if not more.
2) Put the house we have worked our butts off on (for over a year) and finally got it the way we want it (including an amazing walk in closet) on the market and move to CT where he doesn't have to commute and it wouldn't matter if I was making money because the cost of living would be less. Were talking Middletown area, where its cheap. This means moving away from my friends, the waterfront and DH's dream of having his own boat business someday, and most importantly my family (only child so this is a big one.) His family is in NJ so we really have no one there. So it means moving somewhere I don't know anyone. It also means I won't be certified for CT, so I don't know what I will do to work, but there it wouldn't be as much of an issue. But I think I am bored now, at least I have my parents near by. Being home all day up there I think I would be miserable. But we could start trying sooner and hopefully have a baby soon. Plus I would see DH every night.
I just want to cry.

Super busy at work so I didnt ready any other posts so I do not know if this was mentioned yet but is there anyway you would consider moving closer to CT but not out of NY ? I know you love your house but it may be a compromise... its probably a little cheaper to live than Long Island.. and DH's commute wouldnt be as bad so you would see him more.. and you wouldnt be THAT far where seeing your family & friends would be a huge issue.

my vote is go to CT!! Thats what I would do. Join groups and make friends. I'd love to leave NY.
it could be a new beginning and you might even really end up loving it.
plus if you have kids there... you could easy get into a lot of mommy and me type of groups and network some friendships that way.

Yes you have a house you love but youre not with the man you love ... to me, its a no brainer! You will make friends and CT is not that far from LI!

Ok I am voting CT now too! I am in DC & pregnant, and it is not that bad. Sometimes I get home sick but I am 5 hours away. You could make friends w/ the wives that DH works with that live in CT. The only friends I have right now are DH's co-workers wives. One of them is awesome, and we have become really close. Also I have made friends w/ some of my neighbors. I think it would be better for you & DH to be together.

I'm voting move to CT...I know your DH wants to open his own marina/boat buisness, but that industry is really difficult (people tend to have their 'guy') and its also heavily based on the economy (if the economy is bad, no one buys/uses their boats, your DHs business doesn't profit) there are few marinas/boat businesses now, its almost like a monopoly.
He has a job now, and maybe it would be easier for you to get a job in CT. Maybe go and stay a long weekend and check out some houses.
Where is your house on LI? Me and DH live on the water now, and would love to buy a house on the water.

Sorry to hear about this. I know you have to do what is right for you guys. The rest will work itself out.
Personally, I think based on what you said that a move to CT may be a good option. First off, LI, friends and family are a ferry ride away! I like CT and if I had the opportunity to get off of the island, I SO would. That's just me though.
You guys will do what's right and all will fall into place. Good luck!

Re: Baby Bug has me so sad
I appreciate your opinions and I see all your points, but its so not that simple. You guys have no idea the time and labor we just put into that house. We have worked almost none stop on it since we closed on it October 2008. We have done everything ourselves. We have killed ourselves with every little detail. We both look around at the house and the idea of starting over makes us both want to scream.
DH often works until 10pm or so at night, so I really will be alone a lot.
Plus I hate that area of CT with a passion. So does DH. Its why we bought here in the first place and he was leaving his job. I know a lot of you know people who live there and like it, but I mean in his office 15 (15!!!) guys have had DUIs. One guy drives to work on a tractor everyday. DH's old apartment was 30 minutes away from the nearest decent store, an hour from a shopping mall. Its pretty and quaint but way to hickish for me.
But in a lot of ways you girls are right. Its just very complicated. Especially since it means I will be jobless and alone.
However maybe living more in between would be a better idea, thanks for the suggestion. We didn't think it would save us enough to be worth going through the costs of another closing, but maybe it is. Certainly something to look into.

Thats the one thing about being here, its the one industry my parents are really connected in, (see my wedding pics and the big beautiful Sea Ray we came in on.) Another friend has been helping DH a lot with getting deals on parts and he has quite the garage business going on when he has the time to do it, which doesn't seem to be often (between his CT job, running his dad's business in NJ, dealing with his dad's brain issues, and working on our house.) A lot of people go to him because he is talented and reliable. But he is to busy trying to help run FIL's business and commuting to do it. It's a catch-22, he had more time to do it in CT, but no customers. Here there are TONS of people wanting him to rebuild their motors, but no time. But your right, its VERY economy based, especially if he wants to have his own actual shop as a full time business.
Do you guys boat? We are always looking for people to boat with, if we are still here this summer.
My parents live on the water so we keep our boat there. We are about 8 minutes from them in East Islip.

I love DC, I used to live there. I would have stayed there in a heartbeat, but DH would have hated the city. I have TONS of friends down there.

We are in East Islip so we go to Fire Island all the time, Flynns is our favorite. It's $50 to dock there but they give you a food pass for it. But DH sometimes goes out on Wednesdays (when he is home) with a group in Nassau from Scream and Fly... (fast boats). We love boating over there, much better for small boats like DH's hydro-stream.
If we are here, which I doubt we will make a move between now and summer, since summer is why we live here, we will totally need to meet up. His parents have a house in Seaside Park, NJ, so we alternate our weekends between here and there all summer.
Oh and if your DH has an outboard and needs someone to fix it... he can give DH a call. DH has been rebuilding motors since he was 7, he is pretty incredible at it. Had one complaint in the hundreds of rebuilds he has done since I started dating him 9 years ago. (Crotchety old man.)

we have two boats..one boat isn't an outboard, but i just asked him and he said his outboard (a checkmate) does need some work. hes an auto mechanic and fixes the big boat, but the small one is giving him trouble...i have no clue what i just wrote lol, all i care is that the boats run!!! give me your DHs info and in a few months ill have mine call yours :)

Re: Baby Bug has me so sad
It's really not too bad to go from NY cert to another state's cert since NY has among the most rigorous cert standards in the country. We definitely have a reciprocity agreement with CT--it might mean taking one more test, which in the long run isn't all that bad. Honestly, I think your family will totally understand if you have to move to CT for DH's job--they may be sad that you're leaving the Island, but it's not like you're moving to CA. Long Island is a hop-skip away, or even a ferry ride!!!!
Best of luck to you in this tremendous decision.

We live in Amity Harbor and although the boat is docked in our front yard, we don't use it much.
