Baby-Friendly Sex Shop To Open In NYC
Strollers Welcome, Changing Station Available At Store In Quiet Neighborhood That Specializes In Adult Toys

BROOKLYN (CBS) ? You would think a sex shop might not go over well in a neighborhood with lots of families and small children. But as CBS 2 HD found out, there's an adult store in Park Slope that's about to open where mothers and their young children are welcome.

When we think of x-rated shops, we think of graphic windows and the Village.

But along quiet Bergen Street in Park Slope, comes Babeland. You wouldn't even know what's sold here, unless you read the fine print.

There are lots of body products but adult toys are the biggest seller here. Claire Cavanah is the owner, and a mom who says she designed the place to be kid friendly.

'Strollers will be welcome in the store and we are putting a changing table in the bathroom in case the little one needs a diaper change while you're shopping,' Cavanah said.

This neighborhood is kid central. Cavanah said she'll target the mothers with special seminars.

'We plan to hold workshops that discuss motherhood and sexuality and body image,' Cavanah said.

Next door you'll find the maternity store called Bump. The owners are two mothers who met Cavanah years ago, at a baby yoga class.

They're thrilled to have her in the neighborhood, and say they're actually in the same line of work.

'Both our businesses are in the business of sex,' Hannah MacDonald said. 'We wouldn't have bumps without sex.'

On the other side, you have Paul Zumoff who owns an organic restaurant that also sells an herbal formula to boost your libido.

'Conveniently we're right next door if you need us to help recharge your batteries and get balance so that you can get your groove on,' Zumoff said.

So what do parents think?

'There's room for everybody, so I don't object to it,' Corrine Rodriguez said.

'I have two little girls, 4 and 5, (and) I'm actually totally OK with it,' Sue Gilad said. 'I think this is a part of life.'

'I actually think it's really fun and cool, now I don't have to go to the West Village,' another mother said with a laugh.

When the store opens Thursday, it'll be the fifth Babeland nationwide.

i was under the impression that no one under the age of 18 is permitted inside a store that sells adult materials. so how could they let the kids in?

I'm not sure. I think its done with digression. I actually want to check this out, to see how they got parents and the law to allow this. Because according to the artical parents don't seem to mind.

Well if it's like the Toys in Babeland store on Elizabeth....or Rivington I forget which....it's not your typical sex toy store. They have everything out in the open but in a way that's not pornographic if that makes any sense. It's more of an educational store/experience than anything else.

ETA: It's the complete opposite of any of the stores you'd see on Christopher St if that helps...

i'm all for freedom of expression and such---but i don't think its appropriate to bring small children into a store where there are dildos and vibs.

like i want my kid to point to something and i have to explain 'Well that's the Chocolate Thunder sweetie, its for mommies that have BIG hunger for chocolate'
