Banking Question

Banking Question

DH and I are hoping to get to the bank on Saturday to deposit our wedding gifts. Some checks were made out to me and me alone with my maiden name, some were made out to him and him alone, but then some were made out to 'Mr. & Mrs. Alex A.' or 'Mr. & Mrs. Alex and Alexandra A.' etc.

Since it's always his first name and his last name on the check, is he able to deposit the check in to his account? Our names don't have to both be on the account to do that right? Because a) we didn't get our marriage license yet so we can't change anything yet anyways and b) we have to wait until after our minimoon to change my name because I still have flights booked under my maiden name.

How did you all handle this if you didn't have a joint account prior? Even if we put my name in its current legal state on the account, would we still be able to deposit it if my new last name is on the check?

I know people think they're being nice and cutesy, but what a PITA this is now!

Re: Banking Question

We had a joint account, but as long as his name is on the check and you both sign it you can deposit it into his account. If your name is on the check only then I don't think you can (but not certain) and I am pretty sure you will have to put it into your account.

As for the name, just sign the check in the name they put on it. Half our checks I signed Michelle Barbely and the other half Michelle Angelo and I deposited them all at the same time and they were fine with it because they were signed and any that said Michelle Barbely had his name on them too and his name was on our account.

Re: Banking Question

We opened a joint accoutn before the wedding.....if both your names are on the account then you will need a jt account. THe bank isnt supposed to deposit it into a single account. as far as the ones with Mr & Mrs...we put those into the Jt acct without a problem.

Just open a Jt acct in you maiden name and switch the name once you legally change it with SS and DMV....

Re: Banking Question

The ones with mr and mrs im pretty sure you both have to sign....

we went to the bank the day after our wedding and obvi i didnt have our marriage licence, but our bank as a courtesy let us deposit it.
but i had to sign my maiden name and my married name because we were both on the account already but my name on the account was in my maiden name obvi cuz we opened it before we were married.

if that makes any sense! so they might not give you such a hard time if you are already on the account.

Re: Banking Question

Thanks everyone...I'm going to deposit the few made out to me in my own account, and he'll deposit the ones made just to him in his, and then we'll ask the bank what they recommend as the best option to let us deposit the rest...I'd rather not cash them all and deposit the cash because I know you have to pay tax for depositing over a certain amount, unless we split it down the middle...I just want to get this deposited ASAP given DH's track record for letting checks expire

Re: Banking Question

Also you can start the name change process......just make sure you keep a photo id in the name you booked your tickets in.

I dont plan on changing my passport anytime soon so I will always book my travel in my maiden name even though I have changed everything else.

Re: Banking Question

Honestly you should be able to deposit it.

Technically you should both be on the account.... but these aren't government checks so it's not that big of a deal. Usually as long as both of you are present and you have valid ID they will understand the situation. In some instances they may need to get an approval from the management; which is usually given.

You can add your name (using maiden name) on the account while you are there... then at a later date just update to your married name. And you most definately should still be able to deposit the checks made out to your married name into the account with your maiden name... you will just have to sign BOTH ways... So Alex Maiden, then under that signature you would sign Alex Married, and then DH would also sign.

Before you do the own account business you should see if they will let you put those checks all into the joint account. it's worth a shot because like I said... they USUALLY will do it for you.

Re: Banking Question

We were told that BOTH of us had to sign if it was mr and mrs...

ETA: we had a joint acct before we got the gift checks... otherwise, im sure the bank we went to wouldnt have let only DH sign

Re: Banking Question

They let us deposit the checks with no problem but if both of our names were on the check, we both had to sign it. In addition, I had to sign it with my maiden name and again with my married name. I STILL haven't changed my last name because God FORBID I get time off of work to do it so we have to go through this process every month when we used to write each other checks for the rent. So far no one has given us an issue.

Re: Banking Question

We added each other to each others accounts so that they were all linked up. When I log into online bank I see my account, his account and our savings account. We added me under my maiden (til I change it) and him to mine under his name that obvi is that same...

Then as for how the checks are made out...

Mr & Mrs Alex and Ali newlastname = you both sign
Ms Ali A=you sign this way
Mr Alex A= he signs this way
Mr Alex A and Ms Ali Whatever=you both sign old names.

Get it? Basically how ever the check is made out is how you sign it...divvy em up into piles, you'd be surprised how much it helps.

Re: Banking Question

I think it depends on what bank it is.

For chase DH and I had to sign all checks that were made out to Mr. and Mrs. if we wanted them in our joint account.

When I went to citi to deposit some other checks we had gotten after only one of us had to sign the Mr. and Mrs. checks

It does!
But moreso it depends on the teller you get!!!
Either way... no matter how you endorse it, as long as the teller takes it you are good... no matter what bank it is.

Re: Banking Question

We were able to deposit all of the checks into my account we just had to both sign the checks if they were in Dhs name.

Re: Banking Question

I deposited them all into a new joint account, I actually used them to fund the account.

The banker took them with only me signing....he just wanted to open a new account. If it's under $9,999 you wont have to fill out any paper work. If it's more just divy it up into a few different deposits.

I also had no problem depositing checks...we just both had to sign them all.

As for changing your name... as long as your current ID isnt expired you can use it on the airlines so your ID and ticket match. They dont take your old ID away when they issue the new one.
