Bat Mitzvah Gift Question

I haven't been invited to a Bat Mitzvah in almost a decade, and my yoga teacher/friend invited me to her daughter's. We can't go because we'll be in Disney, but I wanted to send a gift to her anyway. Does anyone know if it's customary to gift in Chai or not? Thank you!

Re: Bat Mitzvah Gift Question

We still do it. In fact, we're going to my dad's cousin's son's bar mitzvah next weekend and I plan to give $180 (they gave us $150 for our wedding gift even though they couldn't attend). I was trying to decide between $200 and $150 and just figured $180 should be fine.

You could definitely gift $36 or $54 and it would totally be understood. Sometimes the teens like it when you give them some cash or a gift card because a lot of the time their parents take the checks and stow them away and let them keep the cash. For my cousin a few years ago, I gave him a check for $250 and $54 in cash. He was thrilled!

Either way, your gift will be very generous especially since you're not going to be there! Just give whatever you're comfortable with, and if a multiple of 18 works, go for it!
