Being laid off is bad for motivation.

Original post by TrueLoveIn2008

Not that I am not motivated to find a job. It just STINKS not having anywhere to go in the AM! I get up, eat breakfast, watch some morning TV ... check my email accts, check all the major job websites and do some research on companies I like ... and then maybe I'll apply to a few things if I found anything ....

And I am still in my bathrobe, still haven't gone to the gym (not happening today), still haven't printed resumes for the job fair I am going to tomorrow, still haven't cleaned the living room, still haven't done any laundry.

I kinda just float around.

I know I need to get in the shower first thing, but I planned to go to the gym after doing some job search stuff in the am, and then I procrastinated ... and now I have too much to do to go to the gym (I didn't really want to go anyhow, I am still a little sore from Monday).

UGHHHHH. Thanks for listening.

i understand what you are going through, its a very hard adjustment to make, and i dont time what time i take a shower but i always make sure i do take a shower and get dressed, i'm taking this time to find out what i reallly want to do, i refuse to just take a job, i also just joined the gym...its ok to take some time out for yourself who cares what time you get dress, you are a smart girl with a good head on her shoulders, you will get back into the groove when you find a job, try not to be so hard on yoursefl :)

and we are always here to listen!

That's great! I think German is actually pretty difficult. A woman in my office took classes for quite awhile and she is fluent. Good for you!

It was easier than having to learn spanish, I will tell you that lol

I can remember how to say 'What would you like to eat/drink' and 'would you like to come?' lol

That is it :(

I give you credit for even trying.

Agreed, I mean there is only so much searching you can do. It's also not exactly like the job market is BOOMING, so you aren't going to get responses like you would've a few years ago. I agree with Browneyesncute, just do what you have to do, the right thing will come when it's time.

Keep your head up and don't let yourself get ****** into the crazyness of daytime television lol

German grammar su cks, and I've been speaking it my whole life. There are 7 different words for 'the', and as I write this I can only remember 6.

It is hard, I will say that, but it was deff interesting. :) I didn't get far in the course, but I know some basics. I certainly didn't get to the 7 different words for 'The' part haha

It made for an easy A in college for the language requirement.
Prof figured it out though that I was a native speaker. Forgot to change my accent.

I feel the same way. I'm not nearly as efficient as I thought I would be when i first lost my job. I was like 'well this just means I'll do laundry, clean and looks for jobs all day and I'll cook dinner every night for DH' LMAO ya...didn't quite happen that way. I go out and look for jobs and also online...but not EVERY day. ever since I went out and applied for a bunch of jobs and heard from MOST of them that they weren't hiring until spring I kind of lost some steam. I have 3 possible prospective job offers so I feel positive about that. But as far as laundry, cleaning and cooking...I don't get nearly as much done as i should. I feel like this house should be sparkling when my husband comes home since he's the breadwinner and hard at work. I'm gonna get better at this. It's not fair of me. I need to start looking at my house chores as if they were my dayjob instead of going out for lunch and the mall with my hubby's best friend whose also unemployed.

agreed! your day sounds just like mine. i was just laid off too and here i am, up watching old re-runs of gilmore girls, surfing & wondering what the heck i was thinking when i decided to drink 4 cups of coffee at 6:30pm????

it's the 'place to go' in the morning i'm having trouble with...

Ok Jenn here is my advice - get up and go the gym and run errands first thing - otherwise you won't get to it. Like when I get home from work I have to go directly to gym. If I start playing on the internet - I never get off and one thing leads to another and then I am on for hours and next thing I know it is 2am!!!! (Ps this only happens when dh is away). But really I know u want to get up and look for jobs first thing, that's a priority but I think its better to get all the other stuff done, then come back, job hunt, relax, ahhhh then u have the whole night!

I totally agree with u. When I was laid off a few years ago I got nothing done. Meanwhile when I had 2 jobs and only 2 nights off a week somehow I managed to fit everything in.

Ur a very motivated and energetic person from what I can tell so I hope u find a job soon.

OMG Mel. I feel the SAME way! I totally thought I'd never have any buildup of laundry, the house would be spotless all the time -- NOPE. It's not like I sit around and watch tv all the time - far from it - but I am always online, and then when I am done searching, it's like 1 ... so I go to the gym, or run errands, or both - then I shower, and by the time I'm done, it's 4 -- and then I'm back online, checking to see if anyone wrote me back, and then I get ****** on here. DH comes home at 5 and is like, where's dinner?

I know he doesn't really believe it, but he jokes and says I watch soaps and eat bon-bons all day. It was funny the first few days and then I told him to cut it out. (he has a tendency to take a joke too far.) I am trying hard to find something, and I think he didn't realize it would be hard at all - I mean it's only been two weeks, even I know it was never gonna happen this soon. but i asked him to put some things in the attic on mon night, and he was like, couldn't you do it? you were home all day. again, he doesn't mean to be mean, but sometimes his words come out a little too harsh.

Tessa I know how you feel!!! The morning thing is weird. I like taking my time in the am, but I also liked having a deadline - like, 'I have to get in the shower by 8:15 or I will be late.'

I am going to a job fair out in hauppage this morning, so I have to get off soon and that's GOOD. I am also running errands today after that and then seeing a friend for drinks ... so it will be a busy day today. FM me if you need anything

thanks jenna. that's a good idea - not sure why I didn't think of that. honestly! I have plans today (job fair) but tomorrow am I will get up, eat and then go to the gym so that when I get back, i will shower and be 'UP' - and start the job search then. I know that on tues. when I showered at 9:30 vs 12:30, I felt so much better and awake and productive.

Thanks Andrea I know that feeling - I got so much more done when I worked 9-6. I would squeeze things in at lunch and yeah the laundry was backed up but it got done. If I give myself more of a schedule it will be better.

Re: Being laid off is bad for motivation.

i know its so weird bc you would think when youre not working that you would do all these things and have time for so much but its quite the opposite. WHen you have a routine and have to be up everyday and are out and about your body gets used to it, but once you are home and dont have that its like you have alot less energy, you would think it'd be the opposite but its not at all. I remember DH used to say to me, if it were me and were at home i would work out everyday, he would say he wish he had that amount of time. I told him its the opposite, i used to work out more when i did work and would do it after, and even after i would have energy for things to do after. Its weird how that happens.

Maybe you should consider NYC, the LIRR isnt bad either bc its pretty quick, at first just the thought of it does S*CK but once you start doing it you get used to it. When i first started working in NJ i just remember thinking at first like OMG how am i gonna have to commute to NJ everyday this is crazy. Its funny bc even with a 2 hour commute to NJ, i was getting home alot earlier than i do now lol and realize i shouldve stayed in NJ. But at the time, it was before my wedding and i was told we were going to have our closing in first week of june so thought i was moving and would have a much further commute. Then i come back from HM only to find out the closing wasnt going to happen anymore so i got screwed there. I would've stayed knowing what i know now lol.

DH's company just moved to Jersey City from Midtown and it took him 1 hour and 45 min to get home..he takes the path to the express bus...I live in Whitestone and it stinks bc we dont have subway, even if he does LIRR he has to drive (not far to Auburndale but he doesnt wanna park and all that )

I feel so bad for him

yeah its weird bc at first its hard to get used to, then you get to a point where it becomes so routine and youre used to it. Then after a while it becomes tiring again lol, you go through phases. I hated it bc 2 mins would make a huge difference for me, leaving work 2-4 mins late meant i had no chance of getting home at 5:30 and would get home at 6:30 so those 2 mins meant an hour later home lol. It was crazy bc if i did get out 4:30-4:32 lol it meant i had a chance to run to the PATH, then run to the E from there which wasnt that short lol and try to make the e train that left at 4:45pm and get to LIRR and quickly catch the 5:04 train. If i got out past 4:32 then i had no chance bc the next path train that would come there would be no chance of making the 4:45 E train(it was last stop so always left that time) i used to basically run during my whole commute since i had 3 trains to take.

Oh god you had THREE trains...that is just too insane...and the LIRR only runs twice an hour so

midtown for him was so easy...express bus left him at the front door of his building! ughhhhhhhhhhhhh
