Not that I am not motivated to find a job. It just STINKS not having anywhere to go in the AM! I get up, eat breakfast, watch some morning TV ... check my email accts, check all the major job websites and do some research on companies I like ... and then maybe I'll apply to a few things if I found anything ....
And I am still in my bathrobe, still haven't gone to the gym (not happening today), still haven't printed resumes for the job fair I am going to tomorrow, still haven't cleaned the living room, still haven't done any laundry.
I kinda just float around.
I know I need to get in the shower first thing, but I planned to go to the gym after doing some job search stuff in the am, and then I procrastinated ... and now I have too much to do to go to the gym (I didn't really want to go anyhow, I am still a little sore from Monday).
UGHHHHH. Thanks for listening.

Re: Being laid off is bad for motivation.
aw.. I think you should create a to do list every night for the next day. Like tonight, write down, all the things you want and need to do and check them off as you go along and that will motivate you. Also, just seeing all the things you have to do, will really make you get up and do it!

Re: Being laid off is bad for motivation.
It's a hard adjustment. On days I have off (like Monday for instance) i planned to get up and go to jazzercise at 10, go tanning (so i'm not ghostly for TWOTY), go food shopping, then come home and give our apartment a good cleaning.
Instead, i laid in bed until 11:30, only cleaned the living room, bathroom and kitchen, and didn't get to jazz until 6. I always have the best intentions for my days off -- but it never seems to work out that way.

I am the same way on days that I have off, I know your situation is different but that was my Monday, had it all planned out and didn't do any of the things I thought I would...all I wanted to do was just lay around!

Re: Being laid off is bad for motivation.
I have decided that working at home probably isn't something I should ever consider.
And related to this ... I found a few jobs in NYC that seem perfect ... but they are in NYC ... UGH. Part of me doesn't even want to apply because I *so* don't want to commute on the LIRR. I worked in Huntington for the last 1.5 years - I also LIVE in Huntington. I am spoiled.
I did apply for a job in Melville Hoping I get a call.

i wish you luck no matter where you apply. I commuted for years - I've never not worked in Manhattan. I still commute but from queens so not as bad as when i did it from Merrick.
these days, i'm really sick of my commute and in a few years assuming we move out there when we have kids would love to find a job in LI. but the the way I look at it - I'll take a big pay cut. Maybe consider commuting for just a few years - Huntington isn't a bad train line - if the money makes it worthwhile, doing it for a few years to get the experience, money etc. might pay off big.
I keep telling DH that when we have kids, unless I work something out with my job, I'm taking a pay cut and going to work somewhere with flex time or where i can work from home at least some days. but for now the money is great and I'll be here.
sorry so long - I'm just feeling you on the commuting thing BUT I've been doing it for 12 years maybe after 15 years I'll get what I deserve and a 10 minute commute.

Thanks. I commuted to the city for about 4 years and I hated it. I lived closer then too -- I'd have to be on a 7:30 train now to get into NYC by 8:30 - and that's assuming my job starts at 9
But I know that the $ will be better ... but then again there's the cost of commuting ... so who knows. Aside from that, there just seems to be more jobs in the field I am looking for in NYC ... so I guess it's inevitable ...

Re: Being laid off is bad for motivation.
I hear ya! What I did was make a list of things that I needed to get done and it actually helped. I didn't just sit around all day. I would set my alarm to get up and get things done. Run errands in your gym clothes so you really have no choice but to go to they gym when you're done.

It will get better.
Meanwhile....... Go to 'work' everyday. Get up at a designated time, do your normal morning routine, then go to 'work' job hunting, researching, resume sending. When you've finished that, then you can do everything else that you need to do, like cleaning, going to the gym, watching TV.
It's keeping up a routine that will stave off boredom.
I wouldn't mind being bored at home for a little while. I'm already bored at work.

Aww Jenn...Your day is like my day....it really does stink not to have somewhere to go every more. I try to give myself projects at home everday...but it's still not like going to work. Anywhoo....def. go to the gym...I almost didn't today but I need to see people and get out at least once a day Soon we'll both be missing these days at home.
Good luck with your job search.

Re: Being laid off is bad for motivation.
I know how it is. I was so bored after 3 months of having no job, that I took up learning German lol
I took out some of the books from the library that came with a dvd of how to pronunciate words, and I learned a little bit. Then I went onto brush up on my spanish. It kept me wanting to learn more, and wanting to wake up each day and finish a lesson or something, something to look forward to ya know? :)
I know how it is though, you gotta keep busy or else you will keep feeling like blahhhh.

I get up at 7:30 every day with DH - he won't wake up until I do, so I must. I don't mind that. And I do have a schedule in my head - it's just, how do you know when it's time to stop looking for jobs and time to start cleaning, etc? The job searching thing online can be endless, and I feel bad doing anything but that -- but then I procrastinate a little here and there, and that's why it's 3:00 and I only applied to two jobs. I guess if I gave myself only from 9-1 to do this, I would not procrastinate -- not sure.
I have turned off the TV and am listening to mellow music to stop distracting me - I think this helped today.
Time to clean now!
Thanks girls.

Re: Being laid off is bad for motivation.
Honestly, this is one of my biggest fears about being laid off (well, other than minor things like not being able to pay my mortgage). I get like that on the weekends sometimes, I'm sure it wouldnt be any better if I wasnt working.

That's great! I think German is actually pretty difficult. A woman in my office took classes for quite awhile and she is fluent. Good for you!

It was easier than having to learn spanish, I will tell you that lol
I can remember how to say 'What would you like to eat/drink' and 'would you like to come?' lol
