Black Tie functions - dress code for women

Question for ladies who attend Black Tie functions - For a Black Tie Business function... is it mandatory for women to wear long gowns? Would you wear a cocktail dress?

I have both in my closet (hope the long one fits), I just found out we have a function to attend in beginning of June.

Black Tie optional, then the cocktail dress would be fine.
Strickly Black Tie, then the gown.

I haven't been to a business Black Tie event in a while, but I always wore a gown. It was a male domianted event, but all the men were in tuxes. Most of the women were in gowns.

I think you can wear either a gown or a cocktail dress.

I heard that you're supposed to wear a long gown to a black tie event but I have seen women wear cocktail dresses and look totally appropriate.

Edited to add - if you're worried about it I would err on the side of caution and wear the gown.

I've been to quite a few and you can go either way (cocktail or gown) but gown I always think is more professional and classy.

Cocktail is fine but the dress should cover the knee if black tie. I think it is not called Cocktail than -you get the drift though if you need to be 'appropriately' dressed for the occasion.

I think cocktail is fine. I have a few black tie work events (both optional and not) a year and many of the women wear cocktail dresses. I usually do, too.

I've worn cocktail dresses to most black tie work events and htere has been a mix of cocktail length and gown length. I think either is fine

Side note - how annoying is it that it so clear for a man what they have to wear in varying different settings!!! When I go to work functions I am often the only female going from my office and it is so hard for me to figure out what to wear and they are either suit or tux and they all just decide to do one or the other - ugh!

Thanks for the replies. I'm more confused than before!! I may just wear my cocktail dress...it is simple and definately covers the knees, and doesn't show boobies. Very Audrey Hepburn. But I have a few weeks to decide.
A few years ago, I went to a black tie event in a black suit b/c I didn't really have anything to do with the event ... just a guest of someone who was there for business and I felt fine.

Just a follow-up... I attended the Black Tie function and I wore my gown to be safe... well next time I know ... I should have worn the cocktail dress. It would have been perfectly fine and I would have been more comfortable. About 1/2 the women wore cocktail dresses and I even saw a few pants w/ fancy tops (which I didn't think pants were appropriate but oh well).
I had googled ettiquette sites and they all say that gown or fancy cocktail dress are considered black tie for women.

thanks for the advice ladies.
